Prior to
yesterday’s game, Jose Reyes ran in the outfield at Citi Field and although there is still no timetable for his return, the results were encouraging.
After the workout, Jerry Manuel told reporters:
“It was very encouraging to watch him move as freely as he was moving and to be able to not have a [very] noticeable limp or anything…even though I could still see that in him, it was not as noticeable as it was early on.”
Reyes received a cortisone injection to his slightly torn hamstring tendon last week, and will report to Port St. Lucie to continue his rehabilitation on Tuesday.

Hypothetically, how many games of minor league ball do you think he would need? I would hope they work him back slowly — thinking maybe a full week? Could he be two weeks away?
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I’d say Reyes is about a week away… from his next setback.
Jeez, I wrote ‘hypothetically’ but I guess everyone must show how funny they can be.
not sure about the # of games…at least a week for sure. but the question is how far away is he from even starting those games? He hasn’t done any baseball activities yet, so they will have to work him back slowly and build up strength and stamina.
Complete speculation, but I’d say 1.5 weeks of games, and it all depends on what level he can play at (quality of play, not team-level).
But he’s still at least 2 weeks from starting those games.
I think he will get hurt again. I Hope I am wrong…
We still have a slim chance at making the playoffs, IF, Reyes and Delgado can get back SOONER rather than later. LETS GO METS !!!
I don’t want to be the wet blanket but I would rather hear that Reyes was moving well without the cortisone shot. Having had several myself, they do not heal the wound. It just reduces swelling and pain. The fact that he had a limp however noticeable shows to me that he is not fully healed, he is just not feeling the injury. If he starts running without shots and has no discomfort then I will be encouraged.
Agree, I don’t like that he needed to get a cortisone shot. That just doesnt sound like the best way to heal an injury, more-like what you said and just make it tolerable. That’s not how they should be approaching this. If he’s at risk because of it, then this a HUGE deal. It’s not worth risking a more severe injury or another setback. Heal it properly.
I know the shots are good for bruises and inflammation, but I just dont see how it helps a torn tendon heal by letting you just not feel it while still using it.
Encouraged? A cortisone shot will make ANYONE move like nothing is wrong.
You can’t be encourage by what Reyes is doing now. It is all a result from that shot.
Metsfan1 – I’m 100% with you. It would be great to get him back healthy but given the outlook for this season it’s not worth the risk of rushing him back. If he comes back fully healthy, great.
If not, we need him next year (and no talk of trading him when his value would be at its lowest, he’s a Met next year for sure).
I think they should just shut him down the rest of the year. We don’t need another 04 with him. I mean really unless we go on a tear we should just try to get guys back healthy for next year. Think if Wagner and Putz are both healthy by years end, we pick up their options and make a run in 2010.
Maybe pick up another bat in the FA market i just don’t like rushing guys back from surgery or hamstring injuries.
One thing everyone forgets is that this started as a calf injury and he ran on it and injured his hammy. Let the kid heal.
Please corrcet me if Im wrong, and Im sure someone will. This is NOT the first time he has had this injury? Didnt he go on the DL for a looong time once before with the same problem?
No this is a new injury. He has had hamstring problems in the past (04, 05) mostly strains and pulls. This he tore a tendon behind his knee sort of that runs up to his hamstring.
From everything I’ve read and I’m no DR. but it’s something that doesn’t need surgery, and isn’t really necessary to play baseball. It was just a pain thing that had to heal up so he could start working on it. It hurt when he made any type of explosive movement.
Nah, it’s not the same style of injury but it is the same leg…in 2004 it was his right hamstring that he strained multiple times.
No it was not the same injury.
Aside from the Cortizone shot, I’d like to hear that an MRI has revealed that the slight tear in tendon to the hamstring that they were treating with the platelet technique has healed.
Shouldn’t beltran be back soon?
he has not even stepped on the field, but apparently the bruise is down they wanted to give it another two weeks before baseball activity which would be around 7/21 before he even “tests” it.
Beltran will probably be the first to return, but if we get both he AND Jose back by mid-August (while hopefully still less than 7 games back), the Phillies are going to [explicit] a brick. I really want to give them a chance to choke and find out what it’s like to be the one being chased during September.
Plus, wouldn’t it be nice for someone on the FAN to ask Hamels if he thinks the Phillies are now choke-artists? Please, Karma, show your ugly face!
For the Mets to stand a chance they need two of Reyes, Beltran and Delgado in uniform on a field in the lineup for the NY Mets on August 1st for the remainder of the season period.
There is just no way the current collection of players can keep the Mets within striking distance through August 15th.
I hope so, it would be so nice to return nthe favor of the last two seasons :}
