Q&A: Rockies Blogger on Ryan Spilborghs

by Matthew Cerrone on July 13th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

Last week, In a post to his blog for ESPN.com, Peter Gammons listed the Mets among teams who have interest in Rockies OF Ryan Spilborghs.

The 29–year-old Spilborghs hit .305 with 48 extra base hits and 86 RBI in 186 games for the Rockies during 2007 and 2008, however he’s batting just .259 this season, during which he’s played left field, center, and right field.

Spilborghs is eligible for arbitration each of the next three seasons, and can be a free agent after 2012.

He’s batting .274 in 453 career at bats away from Coors Field.

to learn more about spilborghs, i e-mailed some questions to Rockies fan Russ Oates, blogger from Purple Row

Matthew Cerrone, from MetsBlog.com: Do you see the Rockies trading Spilborghs this season?  If so, what are they typically looking for in trade?

Russ Oates, from Purple Row:  I don’t see the Rockies trading Spilborghs unless the team dramatically falls off by July 31.

There are too many questions surrounding the play of Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez.  Both are great defensively right now, but the bats are not quite there.  We might see one of them sent down to the Springs to work on their game.  However, if the team were to trade Spilly, a strong middle reliever would be the talent level expected.  The bullpen is really missing one of those with Taylor Buchholz out for the season and Many Corpas currently on the DL and having an up-and-down season.

Matthew Cerrone, from MetsBlog.com: How is he on defense?

Russ Oates, from Purple Row: Depends on where you play him.  He’ll be adequate in center field… He’s much better in left field.

Matthew Cerrone, from MetsBlog.com: Without look at stats, do you feel he hits well in the clutch, just sort of going off memory?

Russ Oates, from Purple Row:  Based on my gut, yeah, he’ll come through when you need him… He’ll make you a fan quickly.

Matthew Cerrone, from MetsBlog.com: What is the best part of his game?  What is the worst part of his game?

Russ Oates, from Purple Row: The best part of his game is his hustle. That’s kind of cliched, but he’s giving it his all out there, every time. The downside to Spilborghs is that he’s probably going to be an incremental upgrade since he’s hovering between being an average starting outfielder and a fourth outfielder.
