Gordon Edes of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Pedro Martinez has passed his physical with the Phillies and a press conference to announce the deal is expected to be held tomorrow.

…I love Pedro, but this is the last team I wanted him to join…

2 and 10…

Those two wins? The Mets.

Count on it.

I would take the time to complain about how much money pedro took from the Mets to sit on the disabled list, and then pitch poorly when we needed him the most, and how he refused to take anything less than what “HE” deserved being Pedro Martinez and all, but I honestly just don’t care. Enjoy him Philly. I don’t think it was a good idea signing him, but hey I’ve been wrong before.

Glad I never bought any Pedro merchandise

This is just like the Yanks picking up players to keep them on “their” side so that cant be used against them. Good pick up for the phils….You knwo damn well pedro is gonna bring his A game against the Metropolitans. I still think the mets should have signed him and gave him a Roger Clemens type deal. Only pitch at Citi in warm weather.

Pedro could have lost 20 games in a row (exageration) and I would still appreciate what he did for the Mets. If it weren’t for his influence… would be have signed Beltran? F-Mart? etc.

Not sure if this is a sensitive subject or not…but you get what I’m saying?

I love Pedro, too, and this is the first team I want him to join.

Pedro is nearly 38. He has been injured and/or ineffectual since 2006. Since 2006, we have watched the bad games, when he was pounded early and left early. We have watched the “good” games where he danced on a tightrope for 5 innings, then called it a night.

In that ballpark, in warm weather, I get the feeling his ERA will be above 6.00 by end of season. Fooling Dutch honkballers in the WBC for a few innings is a bit different than the major leagues. He may get some wins, but only because they’ll score runs for him.

The Mets looked at him down in the the DR and know him better than any other team, with the possible exception of the Red Sox (who knew when it was time to let him go). If the Mets wanted him, they could have easily had him at the pro-rated salary but chose not to.

It will sadden me to see Pedro in a Phillies uniform, but I don’t see him as being a real threat. And it’s also an indication to me that the Phillies are not in the Halladay sweepstakes.

Agree with your comments, except the part about Pedro being any indication whatsoever into whether or not the Phillies will/can/should go after Halladay. He’s there to try to stabilize the back end of their rotation…no one thinks he’s anything resembling the ace they don’t have.

Xavier22 July 14, 2009 at 10:32 pm

I would be very surprised if the Phillies were ever seriously in the hunt for Halladay. Would he really be willing to sign an extension to pitch in that bandbox well into his 30s?

I agree with you on all points Xav. I was at Shea for his last game as a Met and it was a valiant performance. He struggled at times but struck out 9 and kept us in it. He got a great ovation when he was pulled and it was a great moment.

He gave us some headaches over the years, but it will really bother me the first time I see him in that Candy Striper uniform. I’m not too worried about him hurting us.

Btw – odds are probably 50/50 that Pedro actually ‘joins’ the Phillies…I mean he’s going to have to pitch at the very least 3-4 starts in the minors to get in game shape, which takes us into mid-August and where he runs the risk of hurting himself. They can’t possibly stick him directly in the rotation after not throwing a pitch in a major league game in 10 months.

John Heyman is reporting that the deal is $1,000,000 guaranteed with $1,500,000 in incentives. I didnt want Pedro but seriously The MEts let him go to Philly for only $1,000,000????? We are the dumbest organization around… it is confirmed.

Peter July 14, 2009 at 9:43 pm

It’s a great deal if we let the Phillies spend money for losses.

Lorenzo23 July 14, 2009 at 10:04 pm

We better hope they are losses.

BullpenHelp July 14, 2009 at 10:15 pm

I agree… $1M base is peanuts. This is only one of the three best pitchers of our generation. I know he’s old, but there are plenty of old pitchers winning games in baseball these days. I think this move will help the Phils and hurt us.

I’d rather we had him, especially at that price!

Mets5rocks July 15, 2009 at 12:25 am

What are they going to get 5 maybe 7 starts out of him, for a million bucks no thanks. IF this was June 14 instead of July 14th then I could see it but that’s alot of green considering Pedro may not even pitch untill Sept. and even then I dunno think he’s gonna be worth much.

Patrick July 15, 2009 at 7:39 am

Pedro has not pitched a good baseball game since September of 2007 against the Phillies.

Enough already, he had one good season with the Mets and then spent most of 3 years on the DL.
