The Phillies will place Pedro Martinez on the 15-day disabled list with a mild shoulder strain.
…I wonder if he will be any impact at all for the Phillies after seeing this…

In an article for MLB.com, Todd Zolecki writes that Pedro Martinez has officially signed with the Philadelphia Phillies after passing a physical earlier today.
The one-year deal is reportedly worth $1 million, plus $1.5 million in incentives.

whatever. I stopped caring about him as soon as he left the Mets.
So, I just hope that if he does ever pitch for the Phils, he stinks, and helps them to a few more losses
At best, he will be up in early August. Who knows how long it will take him to get ready in the minors, or if he will hurt himself trying.
I guess they figure he will be better than Lopez (or whoever that dude theat pitched against the Mets is).
Hopefully for the Mets Maine is back before Pedro gets called up!

OFF TOPIC: Hey Guys I just stumbled on this on SI.com. No wonder Halladay was quoted as saying that a contract entension would not have to be worked out before he would approve a trade. Get this the Toronto Blue Jays are not letting any team negotiate an extension with Halladay prior to a the trade! Cleary this means that Toronto has no intention of dealing Roy Halladay! What team in their right mind would trade four or five prospects for a 32 y/o pitcher without even knowing if they can get him to stay more than a year! Well, I said before the Jays would likely take Halladay off the table ’till the offseason, but clearly this means that Halladay isn’t even truly on the table! It’s just a whole lot of nothing coming from the Toronto FO. NO wonder Philly Signed Pedro. Here is the link if you want to read:

I don’t think they want to trade him. But they are fielding offers. And seeing what kinda of haul they can get. Just gauging his value.
The negotiating window could be a roadblock to some teams but like the article says, they’ll have 1.5 years to do so.
A team in contention like the Phillies certainly might do it. ANd the fact that he is 32 already might make them less anxious to sign him to a huge extension.
Mkae the trade today, and you get Halladay for 1.5 seasons( but 2 potential post seasons), plus 2 first round picks if he leaves as a FA after 2010. And no strings attached.
So, say you trade 3 top (IOW 1st round talent) prospects. Then you get to draft 2 more.
So what you really trade for Halladay is 1 top prospect, and a couple years development on the other 2.
Even worse might be getting the window, and siging him to a 4 year/80 mill extension, then having him break down by the time he is 34-35. Oops.
The Brewers traded a few good prospects last year for the few month rental of Sabathia knowing full well that he would sign elsewhere.
The problem with draft picks is you have no clue how that player is going to perform. Your giving up 3 top prospects who you’ve had in your system a few years and gotten to know alot about physically and personally for 2 draft picks that you have no clue about. How many top picks never even make it past AA, the draft is a crapshoot so your not guarenteed to get 2 top prospects back!

LMAO! Yep this whole time through all the rumors, they had no intention at all of trading him. OF course this is a good thing because that means Philly won’t get him and that my friend is a good thing!
If Pedro gives them the same numbers he gave us last year, Philthie Phans will be screaming phor his head. It’s a guarantee that he will screw up a critical game. He did it for the Mets a time or two, and he’s got less in the tank than when he was with us, so . . .
He’s already being placed on the DL?!?!? How many players sign a contract and go straight to the DL???
I’m sure it was planned that way. This way, he can join the roster yet not take up a spot until he is ready. Not sure, but this had to be planned, especially with his recent physical.
Clements when he signed mid year with the Yanks. I’d bet its just to get him some minor league tune ups.
that was my thinking too, you get him added to the 40 man roster and start getting paychekcs but you give him about 3 minor league rehab starts to get ready and not waste a roster spot on him. No way was he going to start right away with the major league club.
We’re laughing now, but just wait ’til he no-hits us.
The next time the Mets face the Phillies it will Aug 21-24. I would expect Reyes and Beltran to be back by then, as well as Delgado.
If Pedo no hits that lineup, the Mets deserve the loss.

Don’t read to much into Pedro’s trip to the DL. It’s procedural. Pedro isn’t in throwing shape yet. The DL stint allows him to make a couple of minor league starts before joining the Phils sometime next month.
I am not worried about Pedro. I am sure he will get up for the Mets and will want to stick it to us but he is a fly ball pitcher and he is going to have a hard time in that band box, especially when his velocity starts dipping into the 80’s. He will help them but they will need more then him to get over the hump.
