Adam Rubin of The Daily News is reporting that the Mets prefer that Johan Santana does not pitch in tonight’s All-Star Game in St. Louis.
Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen has asked Santana to “be careful”.
Rich Dubee, the Phillies pitching coach, told Rubin:
“If we can stay away from him, we’ll try to, unless we get into a bind. “Unless it gets into extra innings and stuff and we have to use him, we’re going to try to stay away from him.”
Santana threw 114 pitches in his win over the Reds this past Saturday, and he is slated to pitch this Saturday in Atlanta.
…as happy as I am that Santana is an All-Star, there should be enough pitching on the NL roster to avoid him, even though he is arguably the best they have…

As much as I think hes tired and can use the rest, I dont think an inning on his throw day would kill him. Especially since hes not pitching until Saturday which would be a week from his last start.
I wonder if Wright was told the same thing, oh never mind, that only applies to pitching aces, uggggg.
It applies to pitching aces and run producing power hitters, so Wright need not apply. :-)
oh puhleez, he has been in the top 10 of NL rbi leaders and the Mets leading RBI person, so enough already about the power lacking, its teamwide, not just him.
The strike outs, the double plays and the 3rd base errors are only his.
so are the at bats, innings and games, the more you play, the more you can make mistakes.
K’s happens, hopefully less in the 2nd half ,GIDP’s happen, at least you are putting the ball in play and force the other team to make the outs and errors are a part of the game, frustrating but when you are exhausted and anxious they will happen.
lol havery
Seriously, if he can’t picth one inning, he doesn’t deserve to go, give me a break, he would throw on the side today or tomorrow anyway and they moved him back to Saturday to start next. Now, if he is hurt, then that is different and in which case he should not be there.
I agree with you on this one, if he can’t hack one inning, stay at home like a baby who’s just there to get attention. whahhhhh
Did I read this wrong or is everyone killing the wrong person… I don’t think it says Johan said he didn’t want to pitch… It says Dan Warthen and the Mets don’t want him to pitch.
So Get on the Mets for acting like Selfish babies for wanting their ace not used. JOHAN hasn’t said anything, and if you ask him he’ll probably pitch. He’s a competitor.
I agree, but it should not even be an issue, if he’s there he does his best and competes, which i’m sure he will, none of this “i”m here but my team won’t let me pitch more than xx pitches” makes him and the Mets look really stupid.
Some of it may stem from last year when Wright almost had to pitch because the NL ran out of pitchers.
Also… he’s absolutely not the best they have this year. In fact, he probably didn’t even deserve to be an all-star. Yovani Gallardo got screwed (although he’s been terrible his past two starts, before that his ERA was about 2.8)
Good. If Santana can get more rest right now that is great. I wish Wright was fishing with Cora rather than starting at third base.
I agree that if Santana cannot pitch he should be left off the team, but to have him work an inning just to work is pointless. Especially when anyone who has watched his last 8 starts can tell something is wrong. Let him rest. I don’t think a second half surge is likely, but if it happens, it starts with his left arm.
I wish Wright was fishing with Cora rather than starting at third base.
True. the NL team doesn’t need Wright’s K’s… lol
i’m confused. does santana know that rich dubee has said he is going to try to stay away from him? is there a reason why the pitching coach is stating this publicly? nobody is asking dubee to stay away from any other pitcher and i get the feeling from the article that dubee was asked (by whom? warthen? manuel?) to try to avoid using santana. if i were santana, i would be very annoyed. it’s really his decision to pitch or not to pitch. getting advice from dan warthen is very different from dubee avoiding him.
I’m with ya on that one Scott.
People are getting on Johan and he hasn’t said a single word about not pitching. It’s the Mets retarded coaching staff and their ridiculous front office. Oh we want our players selected to the all star game…. We just don’t want them to play in it. Good job once again Mets.
On a side note, does anyone think the mets will sac up and spend some money on Aroldis Chapman, the Cuban defector who’s supposedly 21 and widely considered the best left handed pitching prospect in the world.
From ESPN’s site 2 weeks ago:
Chapman would be the most heralded defector since Jose Contreras, who left the national team in 2002 during a tournament in Mexico.
By several estimates, Chapman could garner a contract worth anywhere from $30 million to $60 million. Contreras, now with the Chicago White Sox, received a four-year, $32 million contract from the New York Yankees in 2003, which at the time was the biggest ever given to a Cuban defector.
Personally I have no faith they will go and spend that kind of money on a minor league player…. That’s just my gut. He will end up on the Yanks or Red Sox and become dominate and we will be sitting there on the sidelines wondering why.
good post, I was wondering about this kid too. He, Stratsburg, and Yu Darvish are the three best pitching prospects in the world. I say pony up and spend some money. If we willing to do it for Dice-K, why not for a player even better. This is the spot where you can improve a team and dont have to trade away talent we dont have. Bid high…and lets see what the kid can do.
I’ve only seen him pitch a little bit, but it seems Chapman could be the next Randy Johnson, or he could be the next Ollie Perez.
And it’ll probably be Perez’ contract that keeps us from going after him….oh what an organization.
We’ll see. Like pretty much everyone here, I know nothing about him. I’m skeptical about high-priced imports in general who almost always seem less than advertised.
I’d be wary of committing so much money to this guy, especially if it means less money for MLB talent.
While i do agree with you there is no guarantee. Dice-K has been ok, Contraeras was very good for a long time, El-Douque was good until he was 70 pitching for the mets, even Livan had a very good long career.
It’s the same chance you take drafting a guy. The thing is when they hit like david price, tommy hanson et el your like oh he was a top prospect, when they miss like Drew Henson and the like you get your WHAT A WASTE…. but you have to take the chance.
My take on everything i’ve read on this kid is there is no guarantee… he’s got a 100MPH fastball, but his secondary pitches aren’t great yet. if he develops one Plus secondary pitch he’s a great closer… a Plus secondary pitch and one or 2 other call them OK pitches and he’s a Legit Top Line starter.
Always baring the dreaded injury bug.
This is all true.
The other thing is this guy is considered a complete headcase. If he’s a stud like Carlos Zambrano, I can live with that. But if he’s not, that’s another problem.
I’d just rather they allocate those resources toward drafting really aggressively — taking chances on guys in the middle rounds and offering them first-round money. You’re only talking about offering those players a few extra million, so that’s 10 million or so versus whatever it would take for Chapman
Also the chances of him actually being 21 are slim and none. Gammons even reported he saw a card for the guy that said he was 26. At that age and without secondary pitches it is a very risky chance. You also do not have the luxury of waiting a few years to see if he can develop the secondary stuff due to the fact his real age is definitely above what has been stated
Hopefully Billy Wagner doesnt blow the save this time…oh, wait.
Met fans continuing to eat their own, if it is not mentalists calling WFAN yesterday to chastise Jose Reyes seemingly asleep to the knowledge THAT HE IS NOT HEALTHY ENOUGH TO EVEN PLAY FOR THIS DISASTER, it is now beating on Santana for trying to avoid pitching in the all-star game.
The same fans would go ape if Santana got hurt tonight.
right you are.
Well, apparently our coaches don’t believe home field advantage in the WS is a factor for the Mets otherwise they’d absolutely want one of the best pitchers in the game to throw in the All-Star game.
This is so monumentally stupid that I hardly know what to write.
What message are you sending your own player that you’re publically asking for him to be babied.
Wasn’t it previously reported that this was Santana’s off day to throw anyway so tossing an inning in the All-Star game would be just fine?
Stupid.
That’s nice of the pitching coach of our big division rival. Now they’re gonna pitch Lincecum for an inning and then push Santana to 8 so they can try and run the best rival pitcher out of action.
Obviously, I’m joking. But really, if he’s an all-star, he should be able to hand an inning of play. Otherwise, he’s hurt and the Mets aren’t saying something, and knowing our cracked medical staff, I wouldn’t be that surprised.
I’m sure he fine, he’s looked good the last couple of times out. I don’t know what the big deal is anyway, it’s Santana’s bullpen day anyhow. I know the Mets want him to rest but 1 inning is not going to make his arm fall off. That said I think the media is making this out to be bigger than it is. If the Mets were really concerned about their Ace they would have strongly suggested to Santana that he skip the all-star game which to my knowledge the team has not done.
Exactly mets5rocks. If they did not want him to pitch under any circumstances they would have pulled a WBC and pulled him. Fact of the matter is plenty of teams do this and have done this before and even said I do not want him used at all. The Mets simply asked that if possible do not use him because of the workload on Saturday. One or two guys are always held out in case of extra innings. They just mentioned they would prefer Santana to be one of them.
Also throwing a side session in the pen and pitching in a game are two different animals. I would also point out that home field for the winning league is pointless anyway since the AL has won for the last decade yet the NL has won more than their share of WS titles.
Oh, good. I’m glad Johan Santana’s health is in the safe and caring hands of the Phillies’ pitching coach.
