The Mets (42-47) play the third of their four game series against the Braves (45-45) today at 4:00 PM EDT at Turner Field.

Angel Pagan will again lead off, followed by Luis Castillo, Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Jeff Francoeur, Jeremy Reed, Omir Santos, and Alex Cora.

Johan Santana (10-7, 3.09 ERA) will start for the Mets. In his career, Santana is 58-17 in the second half, which is the highest winning percentage in history. His 2.70 second half ERA is also the eighth lowest all-time, and he needs one more strikeout to reach 1,700.

Kenshin Kawakami (5-6, 4.26 ERA) will start for the Braves.  Kawakami averages roughly six innings per game, and in his last two starts, has allowed five runs in ten plus innings. On May 5, Kawakami allowed two runs over five innings in a loss to the Mets.

“In his last two starts, he has allowed five runs in ten plus innings.”

Here comes the 6 2/3 innings of 4-hit ball!

6 2/3 innings, 5-hit ball. Nice call. Luckily, our one major-league starter was throwing today. Let’s see if the bullpen can hold it…..

Isn’t it great that we have such a good hitting team, we’re willing to give away outs in the first inning?

Razor Shines July 18, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Sac bunts are the absolute worst, especially when the guy hadn’t even gotten an out yet.

pedros rooster July 18, 2009 at 5:03 pm

A sac bunt, in the top of the first inning, with your #2 hitter? Not sure I’ve ever seen that. I’m not sure that makes any sense at all.

Maybe they did that stuff in the 1960s, when all the games were 2-1 and 1-0, but in 2009? Against Kenshin Kawakami? Someone, just TRY to explain this—I need to understand.

Oh, and will ANYONE in the media bring this question up to Jerry in the post-game? Or will it be another round of “Laughing Off Another Loss, With Jerry Manuel”?

Razor Shines July 18, 2009 at 5:51 pm

If they bring it up, he’ll explain it cooly, and no one will press him on why it still doesn’t make sense to take the bat out of Wright’s hands and give up that out. If you want to create a run, I’d rather tell Pagan to steal, have him get there 75% of the time, and THEN bunt him over (late in the game only). First inning, no outs… I just don’t get it.

So much for a non-contact sport, how bad was it?

wright5murph28 July 18, 2009 at 5:59 pm

if your talkin about wright, it wasnt too serious…took an elbow/shoulder to the calf

Thanks, but the MLB.com feed finally decided to play nice for me.

ericloz July 18, 2009 at 6:16 pm

Can anyone please explain what has gotten into Church?

dave27 July 18, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Santana comes out and this game will be tied within 8 minutes. Hilarious.

ericloz July 18, 2009 at 6:42 pm

Can someone else tell me why Santana wasn’t pitching? Did he throw 250 pitches the first 7 innings?

Doesn’t Jerry want to win any more games this year, or are they shooting for next year’s draft?

And now Ryan Church is up to face Misch. This doesn’t look good . . .

thank god we got out of that but honestly this nonsense of krod not being able to go more than 1 inning is getting ridiculous this is a tight must win game that your ace just pitched his guts out for and you almost blow it bc krod isnt allowed to get 4 outs.

sincekindergarten July 18, 2009 at 7:08 pm

Actually, KRod would be batting at the moment–and Angel Berroa is doing exactly what Frankie would be doing now.

Did Francoeur put eyes on that grounder, or what? Maybe he really did add something to the team when Omar traded for him.

ravi3 July 18, 2009 at 7:42 pm

I think he has been a bit overlooked, but when he has been on the field, he has delivered with the glove and bat. He was the guy who hit the ball in which Church forgot to touch third, and who can forget the catch he made that ultimately ended his season last year. Looking to next year, Omar really needs to make a place for him (Cora too). Easy to forget, but Pagan could have been a part if the core too, coming up thru the system as a teammate of Wright. He may be a late bloomer, but he certainly provides as a complimentary player on a team of stars

ravi3 July 18, 2009 at 7:45 pm

Would be nice if I mentioned this above, but I am talking about angel pagan

wright5murph28 July 18, 2009 at 8:17 pm

well a win is nice but lets not get too carried away…pagan has always been a 4th OFer at best…saying he could of been part of the core is kinda jumping the gun a bit…i mean he had a good game and has had some good games…but hes not nearly consistent enough to ever be a core member….and as far as the complimentary player on a team full of stars….theres a reason hes been a backup/career minor leaguer for a reason…

I’m not trying to bash pagan, hes been solid when hes played…but im not gunna go around saying he coulda been a core member just because he came up through the system…once beltran returns and either sheff or a player from a trade is in LF…pagan will either be 4th OFer or back in the minors/traded….or knowing his luck will be on the DL again

Chiefman July 18, 2009 at 10:18 pm

How about we just enjoy what Pagan did today and refrain from overanalyzing his strengths and weaknesses. For once, we won a game…let’s just savor that.
