According to the Daily News, the Mets had decided to release Tim Redding by the end of this road trip.
…however, given last night’s injury to Fernando Nieve, it would seem, instead, the Mets will likely keep redding around, since nieve will most certainly soon end up on the disabled list…
…it seems most everyone believes Jon Niese will replace nieve in the rotation, while redding will bump to the bullpen…
In his last eight starts, Niese is 5-1 with a 0.96 ERA in Triple-A.
…i bet nieve gets put on the disabled list, Nick Evans is capped up to
take his place on the roster, while keeping redding on the roster in the bullpen… then, next week, the Mets will promote niese to slot in the rotation, and then decide to either demote evans again and hang on to redding… or, keep evans and cut redding…
…technically, the Mets could go with just four starters through the end of the month, thanks to an off day next Thursday, but it does not appear they’re going to do that, which is smart… niese has earned a start, and it’s time to see what he can do…

In the New York Times, Ben Shpigel writes, “In a not-so-stunning development, the Mets lost another player and another game Sunday night.”
Yesterday, in the second inning, Fernando Nieve strained his right quadriceps muscle while running out a ground ball to first base.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Alex Cora said, according to MLB.com. “I probably could have said it last week, but now I’m sure of it.”
Nieve is scheduled to have MRI exam on Monday in New York.
“In all honesty,” Jerry Manuel told reporters, “when that happens, and a team has gone through what we have, you can feel a different type of silence on the bench… They are young men, and these types of trials they probably haven’t been through.”
Manuel said he anticipates Nieve will end up on the disabled list.
…sure, because, at this point, i’d have to think he anticipates every one will eventually end up on the disabled list…
David Wright said, regarding injuries and bad play, while speaking to reporters following the game:
“This is something that has haunted us this year… It’s a string of bad luck, I don’t know what else to say. This isn’t the way it’s supposed to go, but we’ll hang in. It’s happening and we have to deal with it.”
…that’s the thing, the team looks and sounds defeated… and, i’m not sure how, at this point, that gets turned around…
The NL East blogs of SB Nation discuss the July 31 Trade Deadline.
James K of Amazin Avenue uses statistics to show why Jerry Manuel made more than one mistake in last night’s game.
John from Metstradamus looks back at the Omar minaya era, and wonders if what could replace him might be worse.
Tomorrow night, Faith and Fear in Flushing,
among others, will have the first Amazin Tuesday, which you can learn more about here.
Tie Dies still believes, but, in a post to Mets Merized Online, he also explains why it is time to face facts.
Braves fan Shaun Payne of Dugout Central explains why Frank Wren pulled one over on Omar Minaya by trading him Jeff Francoeur.
Lastly, in a post to the Daily Stache, Michael Ganci looks at the interesting case of J.J. Putz, who has a $9 million option for next season.
…putz’s future will depend a lot on how he recovers this season… however, i believe the original plan was to trade for him, then pick up the option and trade him to a team in need of a closer this off-season… because, a one-year, $9 million deal for a closer would certainly interest lots of teams… but, that means nothing if he can’t get back to pitching this season…
The Mets (43–48) lost to the Braves (46–46) by the score of 7 to 1 in Atlanta last night.

The Least You Should Know:
- Fernando Nieve was carted off the field with a quadricep injury while running to first base in the second inning.
- Tim Redding gave up five runs in relief of Nieve, helped by errors from Jeff Francoeur and Alex Cora.
- Javier Vazquez pitched seven innings for the Braves, and allowed just six hits and one run, thanks to an RBI single from Francoeur.
Etc., Misc., and Other Observations:
- The best part of the game is that it started at 6 pm, and ended early enough to get a good nights sleep, in advance of my return to MetsBlog following a small break.
- I think it’s time to start looking forward, and talking solutions, trade deadline, sell-offs, etc., while holding out hope for a miracle.
The Mets begin a three-game series with the Nationals in Washington DC today, with Livan Hernandez taking on JD Martin.
