In a post to Hot Foot, Andrew Beaton focuses on Jerry Manuel’s use of the sac-bunt, writing, “When the Mets have such a thin lineup, as they do now, the first inning isn’t a time to be playing for only one run.”
…i feel like, because the lineup is so thin, that is when you sac bunt to score early, especially against a team like the Nationals… and they’re bunting with Luis Castillo… it’s not like he’s bunting with David Wright in an RBI situation…
…by the way, in case you haven’t noticed, Castillo is batting .291 with a .388 OBP in 80 games for the Mets this season…
Sam Page of Amazin Avenue explains why Omar Minaya should be a seller, by moving Gary Sheffield for ‘a decent package of prospects.’
…there is a slight chance the Mets could get one prospect for sheffield, maybe, but there is zero chance of getting more than that… from what i can gather, the only veteran player with much value to other teams is feliciano, and even he would only return a mid-level minor leaguer… the dream of selling is just a dream… like a former agent told me, ‘it isn’t 1999 any more.’…
In a post to Mike’s Mets, NostraDennis writes about Zen and the Art of Being a Mets Fan in 2009.
Lastly, according to Joe D of Mets Merized Online, acquiring Roy Halladay is the first step on the road to victory.

Yes Castillo is hitting .291 with a .388 OBP. But with the way this team is currently constructed with no power, it doesn’t do much good.
Irrelevant it is not Castillo’s fault that Beltran, Reyes and Delgado are on the DL and David Wright decided he would rather by a mix of Tony Gwynn and Adam Dunn.
You and your cheap shots at David Wright, we know you hate him, we get it, you don’t need to look for any excuse to bash him.
He is playing hurt and has been playing at less than 80%, give him a break already, stop the hating.
But a .291 average for someone with zero power — not only zero HR power, but zero extra-base power is useless. I love that he gets on base, but he’s still one of the worst offensive second basemen in the game.
Fifth worst OPS among 2B with enough PA to qualify. At the bottom in doubles, etc.
So while he hasn’t been the absolute train wreck he was last year, he’s still been bad. And in no way has he done anything to justify the moronic contract he got.
But the .250 hitting first basemen with 5 homers hitting third is a top notch major leaguer in the eyes of many on this site.
My god what do you want from Castillo, I mean he is hiiting at his career average (far better than last year) He gets on base, he steals bases. He’s been solid in the field (save for that night in Yankee Stadium) In fact if we had our real lineup back Castillo would be well on his way to scoring 110-120 runs! You can’t ask for more than that from a table setter! Get off his back already! I mean seriously his been one of our more consistent offensive players! (Granted that says something about the state of our offense, but still)
I don’t want anything more from Castillo. My point, this is all Castillo is, which is a below-average second baseman.
All he’s done this year is prove that at his best, he is not worth the contract he got. I realize this is more of an indictment of Omar than Castillo.
But if we’d like to pretend this is T-ball and we should all celebrate the fact that little Luis isn’t as horrendous as he was last year, by all means, let’s celebrate.
Like I said, Castillo isn’t the problem this year. Get off his back. Is it his fault that OMar gave him a contract.
The 1986 team started in 1983 when the Mets got Keith, then they put Doc and Straw on th eteam and th efinal piece was Carter in 1985 and in 1986 we won. It takes time to build a team and we do have the foundation, with Santana, Beltran, Wright and Reyes. If we can add Halladay to th emix, we would have a team built to win.
I hope i’m wrong but i’m not convinced Reyes and/or Beltran are coming back this year, and if they do, they will not be in ideal conditions.
I’m all for being buyers at this point in the season but I do not believe we really have much to sell. To Matt’s point, nobody is going to want Sheff, and those that do, aren’t going to give a lot for him. Schneider won’t demand a high market either. So we’re looking at minor leaguers as trade bait. Sure, we can offer to take on the salaries of some over paid players and that may make some trades easier but, as we’ve seen, the Wilpon’s wallets have “for some reason” *wink* gotten tighter.
I just don’t think we’ve got much to offer, w/out depleating the rest of our farm system. And, I do not want to make a trade for the sake of making a trade. Unless we get offered something that’s an obvious take, I’m for digging in our heals and playing out the rest of the season.
Lets be honest, we’re not making the playoffs, so why waste the talent we have in the minors…
What your saying is what we are asking for. Trade Sheff, Schneider and get whatever you get. Anything is better then nothing. This team isn’t making the playoffs so what’s the point with Sheff and Schneider. Both are FA’s at the end of the year and HOPEFULLY won’t be back.
For the Mets to move Castillo, somebody has to have a sudden injury to a player and a brain hemmorage in the front office, then the Mets would have to eat half of his remaining money (or take back a similar bad contract) and in return the Mets would get back a 2 beer vendors and groundskeeper to be named later.
Look fans here’s our new second baseman (insert video of castillo dropping pop up)
I think 2 beer vendors and a grounds keeper would make me happy.
I’ll take a card board cutout. or a Fathead.
I think there was a market for castillo, but Omar didn’t push hard enough. The brewers were looking for one. Eat the contract and get a prospect. Well worth it to every mets fan.
Sheffield might get us a top 30 prospect, but not top 20
Schneider has value as a backup and might get us a top 30 prospect
Feliciano might get us a top 20
I’m interested to see Wagner & Putz in August. I could definitely see a team parting with a top 10 prospect if these guys are healthy.
Neither Putz nor Wagner would likely clear waivers, one has no contract to worry about next year, the other has a reasonable buyout.
I’m not so sure. How many teams want to eat a couple of million just to block?
Age,
That’s what i’m saying..
If this team has no shot to make the playoffs this year. Getting a low level prospect in return for Sheff, for Schneider, For Reed, for Livan…. Guys that will not be part of the team next year
At least your getting something for them. At the end of the year, schneider walks, so do Sheff, and Livan. AND YOU GET NOTHING. Get something. Anything. A Player to be named later. You never know. Guys come out of nowhere all the time. Johan was a Rule 5 draft pick. Pedro was thought to be only a reliever. Dan Uggla was a Rule 5 draft pick.
Get something. Rely on your scouting department to try to find a gem, and if what you gets turns out to be Garbage… Oh well you would have gotten nothing anyways.
So..next year when Omar uses the rule 5 pick to get a backup catcher and a left hander and they both stink we will hear how he is cheap or is terrible relying on rule 5, etc etc.
I am all for dumping Schneider but I do not think its wise to get rid of Pedro for something that waint going to help. You are not getting a prospect thats going to be immediate help next year and then you create a gaping hole with your lefty. The Man owns Howard and utley, why trade him??
Oh I don’t want to get rid of Feliciano. He will be a part of the team next year. The guys i want gone are
Reed
Castillo
Schneider
Sheffield
Livan
Redding
Also if at all possible Delgado and Wagner if possible through the waivers.
Those guys arent getting anything back of use but I with you, dump them.
If we have to rely on our scouting dept. to pick out a winner in the rule 5 we are in trouble! lol
I am sorry but you are not getting a top 30 prospect for Schneider and you are not getting a top 20 prospect for Pedro. you are dreaming on both counts. Therefore, if you arent getting a good player to help you next year for Pedro why trade him???? He will help us next year.
Its foolish to trade parts we can use next year. Schneider and Sheff is one thing…
i think he meant a top 30 prospect on a team not a top 30 in the Minors. Like say in our system would be Dock Doyle, Nick Carr, Kirk Nieuwenhuis etc, not a Holt, Mejia, Neise type.
Not a BA top 30. That’s a Teams #1.
But those players could turn out to be something good. Those top 30 Team prospects sometimes. You never know.
Ok..in that case I can see that happening. I have no idea what team would want to give up anything for Schiender but hey you never know
And another thing, while we added Carter & Mex in 86, and Clendenon and Agee in 69, the Mets were good because Seaver and Koosman were 26 games over .500 and that Gooden, Fernandez, Darling & Ojeda were 43 games over .500. It was pitching.
To start a season (2010) with Halladay and Santana puts you about 20 games over .500. This is a deal that makes us better for at least one year, more if we open the wallets
Here I agree with you. I think the only chance he comes to the Mets if we trade for him now. I think we will be outbid by the Yankees and boston. I think it would be terrible for baseball for Roy to end up on the Yankees. who the hell buys 3 #1 starters????
If we dont get Halladay after the Jays came to us to get a deal done I dont even know how I will be able to contain myself from flipping out. We arent trading for Victor Zambrano here, we are trading for the best pitcher in baseball!!! IS this organization st*pid????
If we dont get this deal done I dont care what Fred or Jeff Wilpon says but it is further proof that they got completely wiped out by Bernie Madoff. Our payroll is less than last year as it is. Bring in the best pitcher in baseball you m@rons!!!!!!!!! I h@te this organization
Lorenzo.
I actually agree with you on this one…. This is taking into account Jon Heyman is correct and this was the rumored deal. Your keeping your arguably 2 best pitching prospects, and only trading 2 of your top 10 prospects a relief pitcher and a light hitting SS.
This is also assuming that Roy Accepts the deal.
If both of those are true…. Every mets fan should get MAD.
I agree..you have to make this deal. However…if he doesnt resign with us, then the deal is horrible.
Sheffield’s not going to bring us a lot back for the fact he can’t play much OF, he has a bad hamstring and hasn’t gotten along with teams. The Mets have been one of the few he has (only because he got everything he expected and more). I guess there is an outside chance that if the Mets get hot (or the Phillies go ice cold), the lead could only be like 4-5 games in a few weeks once all the guy’s get back… That’d be striking distance. So you never know. If Gary can’t get us anything, they may as well hold onto him. Livan can’t get us much either with his regression, but he’d have better value in July than he would in August.
The guy’s they should look to move are Angel Pagan (especially if Beltran is coming back soon), Carlos Delgado (in August, he might be able to get us back something), Sheffield, Livan and Sean Green and/or Brian Stokes (if he’s not in next year’s plans). I think Stokes, Green and Feliciano will be back though.
The rumor is bogus so don’t read that deep into it. Last night, when I read it, there was no other source that published it. That’s why I was skeptical. I think part of the reason for trading him would be keeping him away from the Phillies, but long term it’d probably actually benefit us if they got Roy, since they probably won’t be able to re-sign him & would have to give up Drabek plus other good prospects.
I’m not sure if that package is enough. If you think about it, it’s only slightly better than for Santana, which is acknowledged to be a really lopsided deal. F-Mart and Gomez (at least at the time) were equal. Mulvey and Niese have similar value (although the Mets would like to believe differently). The only other guy who sticks out is Parnell for Humber, but from what I’ve heard Guerra may have some potential. I don’t really know much about Tejada, but I’m not sure where he figures into the team’s plans with Reyes and Flores.
Personally, I hope the Dodgers trade for Doc just to screw the Phillies. I’d say they’re the favorites to win the NL pennant as is, but with him it’s by a distance. If the Phillies can’t at least get back to the WS, it’ll be hard maintaing that revenue.
