Post Game: Nationals 4, Mets 0
By Michael Baron - Jul 21, 2009 9:30 pm

The Nationals defeated the Mets 4-0 tonight in Washington.

For a full recap and box score, click here.

The Least You Should Know:

The Mets offense was absent once again, scattering just six hits against Long Island Native John Lannan, who stymied the Mets once again in a complete game shutout.

Oliver Perez did not distinguish himself once again, walking six batters and allowing four runs on four hits in six innings.

The Mets had a good chance to score in the third inning, but Nyjer Morgan made a fantastic catch in deep center field to rob David Wright of an extra base hit and a couple of RBI.

Tonight marked Fernando Tatis‘ 12th double play he has grounded into this year.

Other Observations and Notes:

This was the second time that Lannan has thrown a complete game against the Mets this year, both coming in Washington.

It doesn’t matter what team he plays for, but Nyjer Morgan seems to kill the Mets every time he plays them.

Perez has now walked 17 batters in 17 innings since returning from the disabled list, and on the year he has earned $155,454.55 per walk so far.

Since being acquired from Atlanta, Jeff Francoeur is hitting .364 with 1 home run and 7 RBI in eight games.

Luis Castillo has hit in 13 out of 15 games in July, and he has hit .362 with 17 hits over that span.

The Mets will conclude their series against the Nationals tomorrow night with Mike Pelfrey facing Craig Stammen.

OLiver Perez Strikes yet again! 17 walks in 17 innings?????It’s just mind boggling. I mean this isn’t a case of Ollie getting squeezed, he missing most pitches by a good 6, 8 inches atleast! Sometimes he off by a foot! Honestly I’m to the point where I think it’s time that OMar and company seriously consider releaseing Perez and let Figs get some starts in, at this point we couldn’t do any worse!

    • ditas says:

As much as I would like to see it happen, there is no way that Omar releases Perez and eats the rest of his $36 million three year contract. If he does release him, he is pretty much telling the Wilpons that he deserves to be fired and Omar will never do that.

I still cannot believe that this man was signed for $36 million when no other team was even on the radar for him. This is the classic example as to why Minaya is one of the worst GMs in baseball, that and what he did to the Expos/Nationals farm system while he was there. He traded Grady Sizemore, Brandon Phillips and Cliff Lee for Bartolo Colon.

      • Mets5rocks says:

Fine then ship him to the bullpen and let him rot, rot, rot!

        • ditas says:

I hear you man. I didn’t want to see this guy on the team after last season. I just can’t stand watching him pitch and I can just imagine how his teammates feel playing behind him.

The bottom line is that these signings are going to doom this team for the next two to three years. Just like the Castillo contract. If Omar doesn’t give Castillo that contract, then Orlando Hudson is probably are second basemen this year. This offseason Minaya could have gone after Lowe, Burnett, Wolf, or Garland, but he decides to go after Perez, which ok you need a pitcher you have to sign someone, but the guy wasn’t close to signing with anyone and Minaya gives him a three year $36 million dollar contract. Ridiculous.

The Mets need to get rid of this man.

    I’m surprised it’s only 12 double plays.

and when you hear “once again” three times in one post describing a loss, that isn’t good.

    • Chiefman says:

Speaking of DPs, Tatis celebrated his return to the starting lineup by hitting into yet another one of his signature twin killings.

      • Mets5rocks says:

UGH! and sadly with Sheff going down the Mets can’t even afford to release Tatis! He has killed more rallies than I care to count!

        • kd bart says:

Yeah. It was all Tatis fault that they lost last night. Nevermind Perez’s awful pitching, six walks and a HBP in six innings. and the rest of the lineup basically doing nothing. If only Tatis didn’t play, they would’ve won.

BTW, Tatis has the same OBP and a higher slugging percentage than everyone’s darling, Daniel Murphy. While, Tatis isn’t much of a major leaguer anymore, Murphy has all the earmarks of a career major league journeyman. A man with no position on the field. But some of you seemed to want him as your starting first baseman next season. Comparing him to a young Keith Hernandez which is laughable. Put it this way, I don’t other are inquiring about Murphy in trade scenarios.

          • Razor Shines says:

I guess when you look at it that way, hitting into 12 DPs and being awful all year is fine as long as it wasn’t completely his fault they lost the game last night. Great analysis. Let’s never get on anyone unless it was their fault completely. And let’s top it off by pointing to someone doing worse than Tatis and saying that because other posters like that guy’s potential, it’s not fair to get on Tatis.

Just because some people like Murphy more than you doesn’t mean Tatis isn’t a piece of garbage.

            • wlaadair says:

Last night was a team loss, there is no “he” in team any more than there is an “I” in team.

As a team they failed to score runs and as a team they allowed the Nats to score, end of story.

  3. Mets5rocks says:

    OH the HUmanity! lol…..waaaaaahhhaaaaaa

  4. kd bart says:

Could`ve been the worse lineup fielded by an mlb team this season. Nothing from the 5 spot on down.

  5. Chiefman says:

Ollie is a waste of $36 million. Shame on you, Omar for such a stupid move.

  6. thedude says:

Speaking of not distinguishing himself, anyone hear Omar on SNY tonight? I appreciate him coming on and Cohen did a good job with questions, but good lord is Minaya incompetent.

Did he really say A ball is filled with mostly 23 and 24 year olds? And that if you’re not involved in scouting, he doesn’t care what you think of his job? Discounting the fact that opposing scouts have been the most critical of the Mets farm system, he came off as incredibly arrogant.

    • ditas says:

Wasn’t able to listen had to watch the MASN feed, which is like a fate worse than death. Carpenter and Dibble make my ears bleed. But anyways were you able to count the times Minaya uttered the phrase “you know” its his favorite.

    • dulcetpine says:

I don’t think Minaya sounded arrogant, he is just unable to finish a thought while speaking without jumping to five other things, none of which make sense nor connect to each other. It is difficult to listen to him, thats for sure…

I don’t think you need to be the best public speaker to be a GM, but you probably should be able to finish a sentence. It may be because he is nervous on TV and wants to come across as intelligent and in control, something that I myself would have a hard time doing knowing that there are so many people watching but he should be used to it by now.

  7. Mets5rocks says:

UGH! 10 games back THe Filthies just won it in the bottom of the13th on a 3 run HR by Werth……..UGH!…just UGH!

  8. wright5murph28 says:

win tomorrow and take a series…at least thats a start….and im more looking at the wildcard…6.5 back isnt very hard with half the season left…

    • Mets5rocks says:

I like the way you think! lol

      • 2009_believe says:

thats some very encouraging news, i’d like to see the phillies begin to suck though at least to close the gap but if we do manage to make a run at the wc i’ll be happy. i just want things to be interesting, give me something to cheer for

        • Razor Shines says:

forget the phils. the top WC teams lost too. We are 6.5 back with 7 to play against the Rox (included 4 next week)… today is a must win, then Johan… if we can get it to 5 by Monday, we can cut into the Rox and worry about the Giants later. Maybe Jose turns it on this weekend too…

  9. MetFanForLife says:

Let’s face it: Lannan is a quality starter. The Mets had their chance when DWright’s big fly was tracked down by Nyjer Morgan (whom the Nats stole from the Pirates). As we’ve often seen, once the team does not convert on an early scoring opportunity, they fail to make another run. Ollie can’t put so many baserunners on via BB or HBP. I still think his 3/36 contract was a good move, but he needs some coaching to get him to pitch like the 15 win pitcher he was. He’s a valuable lefty, especially when facing the scary Philly lefties. Let’s take Wednesday’s game and rest.

  10. steadyeddie says:

A good GM makes sure he gets his money’s worth:
Lannan gets 1 year at $424,000.
Perez, 3 years and 36 million.
    You saw the game.
Omar seems like a nice guy.
I remember what Leo Durocher used to say about nice guys…

    • sincekindergarten says:

Yeah, I know all about nice guys finishing last. But, Ollie has the best agent out there, and it shows.

I wonder if the Mets will title the DVD of the season’s “highlights” as “2009–The Lost Season.”

Three to five years before the Mets play postseason baseball again–at least.

  11. jimyager says:

This team stinks!! Shut out by the worst team in baseball.

  12. jimyager says:

ITS OVER!!! I give up. After Beltran watched strike 3 go past him, every season has been PAIN. How much can this team do to us fans? How can things get any worse than they are? Its time for Omar to re-vamp this team, and, it may take a few seasons of this bad news bears play before we are back again. When Beltran said the METS are th eteam to beat in the NL East he was not kidding, even the NATS beat us.

    • wlaadair says:

Why does anyone listen to a word Beltran says in the first place?

He’s famous for staying quiet until its time to say something stupid only to follow it up by not making himself available to play.

Yeah, he’s someone to inspire everyone

  13. jimyager says:

This why we should have signed PEDRO, would he be worse than Ollie?

    • dulcetpine says:

He would have been far cheaper too…

    • methead says:

Um yes he would have. Ollie has given us 6 innings in the last 2 starts and given up 3 and 4 runs in each. We should have won those 2 games but because we have NO OFFENSE we couldnt.

      Nothing to do with Ollie.

  14. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

Tatis should be allowed to play fulltime.

He has hit into 12 DPs with limited play.

If he was given the opportunity to play fulltime, we could witness a run at the record books. Whats more fun than that?!

The National League record for most DPs in a season is currently held by Miguel Tejada, who hit into 32 double plays during the 2008 season for the Houston Astros.

The major league record for most DPs in a season is currently held by Jim Rice, who hit into 36 double plays during the 1984 season for the Red Sox.

Let Tatis play! Let him go for the record!

    • steadyeddie says:

      why stop there?
what’s the record for most walks given up?
most pop ups dropped out of mitt?
most outs due to not stepping on the base?
most injured players- real and imaginary?
least home runs in a season?
most lineups used by a manager?
most dumb fans who put up with this crap!!!!!

  15. dulcetpine says:

what’s the record for most walks given up?: Amos Rusie in 1890 for the NY Giants: 289

most pop ups dropped out of mitt? Fred Clarke had 49 fielding errors in the outfield in 1895

most outs due to not stepping on the base? dunno

most injured players- real and imaginary? dunno

least home runs in a season? 1908 Chi White Sox only hit 3

most lineups used by a manager? don’t know

most dumb fans who put up with this crap!!!!! 5,511,466 = Mets attendance since 2006 (not including 2009)

  16. methead says:

Can we get off of Ollie and focus on how this team is bad??? I mean seriously look at Ollies number since he has been back.

    5 IP 2ER 4 Hits 7 walks
    6 IP 3ER 5 Hits 4 walks
    6 IP 4ER 4 Hits 6 walks

Does are not horrible. The walks are bad but he is not the reason we are losing. All 3 of those games were winnable.

    • wlaadair says:

If Ollie had been able to get the ground ball out, maybe some of the walks may not have been as damaging but it seems like the Mets are the ones that always hit into the DP’s.

Santos’s two passed balls did not help either.
