Health: Updates on Sheffield, Wagner and Beltran

According to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, Billy Wagner could begin a rehab assignment next week.

i had heard wagner is growing frustrated in PSL, feeling he is ready, knowing he is missing a) time to help the team, and b) prove what he can do, with regards to a contract for next season

Burkhardt also says Gary Sheffield said he could have started tonight.

Lastly, Carlos Beltran will have his knee re-examined in the next few days.

like i said the other day, from what i understand, surgery is still an option for carlos… the thing is, even of he could magically begin rehabbing tomorrow, it would still b two to three weeks before he wa back in the Mets lineup

Matt – Wagner doesnt care about helping the team. He already told us not to expect more than a “Brian Stokes” like role when he comes back. He only cares about proving he could pitch so he gets signed next season. It is all about the money for Billy. He’s been a selfish ball player his entire career.

JefJarrett July 24, 2009 at 6:52 pm

Doesn’t that mean he doesn’t expect to close or set up? And frankly who would expect him to?

BigDaddyKirk July 24, 2009 at 6:52 pm

I wouldn’t go that far. Wagner said that in response to a question about what his role would be this year. He knows he won’t be the closer, and with Putz and Parnell, he didn’t expect to be the set-up guy, either.

My interpretation of his comments was that he was (1) making sure fans/media didn’t think he’d show up, guns blazing and awesome (he has no idea how he’ll fare, after all) and (2) he didn’t want to show up late in the season and start displacing guys who’d been on the team all year long and had established roles (in other words, be a bad teammate).

Do you remember he something else—like “I’m only pitching for Fred Wilpon” or something like that? Maybe it was Jeff Wilpon—I don’t remember, but it was weird.

Lorenzo, I get the feeling that Billy tries to say the right thing, but horribly butchers it most of the time so he looks like a douche. That’s my hope, anyway—if not, your assessment is correct, and he actually is a douche.

Lorenzo23 July 24, 2009 at 7:44 pm

haha he’s a douche

methead July 24, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Dude…on this site…no one is safe no matter what they say. He says based on the fact that he has been out all year that he doesnt expect the Mets will play him in a major role. Why is that a problem? LOL The man accepts he will be a nobody in the bullpen, he gets killed. I dont get you fans.

Lorenzo23 July 25, 2009 at 10:18 am

Well The Mets are paying him $10 million. He could come back and contribute for that much.

letsgometsgo1986 July 25, 2009 at 11:03 am

I totally agree. He is a grade A jerk and always has been. Anyone but me remember when you spouted off in the preseason at the college kid who laid down a bunt? Let him come back, and pitch great so someone else can give him a huge contract. God forbid he should pitch great for the huge contract we have already given him.

dave27 July 24, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Why wouldn’t we rush Wagner and Delgado back? What good to us are they rested for next year? They are both gone, and we’re paying them enough.

JefJarrett July 24, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Delgado will come back when hes ready to. I wouldn’t necessarily think he is not coming back however…..who else will they have at first? Even if Murphy continues to play decent defense there…..his bat is far from what the team needs there…..if Delgado is healthy enough to still produce, and isn’t asking for a fortune….I say you definetly bring him back.

The team MUST make a trade for a #4 hitter in the offseason however….wright and beltran are not the answer in the cleanup spot…..they have to find a way to get Dunn from the Nats – I can’t think of anyone else that would be a FA or available in a trade that would fit that mold.

wright5murph28 July 24, 2009 at 6:56 pm

Matt Holliday will be available for LF

JefJarrett July 24, 2009 at 7:16 pm

1. Is he a #4 when not at Coors?
2. Isn’t his agent Boras….he is gonna want compensation for his numbers at Coors….not on the road.

wright5murph28 July 24, 2009 at 7:29 pm

Yea id say hes a #4 even when not at coors…he said in an interview he tried to change his swing to be more of a line drive hitter and it messed him up, he also said he hears all the “you cant do it out of coors field talk” and once he went back to his own swing a couple weeks back hes been tearing it up…and u gotta remember…this year he has 55 RBIs and he was playing in that garbage A’s lineup….u put him between beltran and wright with the mets lineup id say he can hit 25-30 HR and 110+ RBI….and he will steal 20-25 bases

Yea his agent is boras…but the mets are gunna need a big bat and paying one is alot easier then giving up the farm..

JefJarrett July 24, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Fair points…..thanks!

stickguy July 24, 2009 at 7:35 pm

I really thought no way could Delgado be brought back for 2010, but now I am not so sure. If he does manage to come back this year, and prove to be healthy enough to be productive, Omar just might try to bring him back.

Although who knows. he might only take the offer if he has no other ones, since it wouldnt surprise me in the least to see him bolt for an AL team to extend his career.

I might not mind the 1 year deal (although I am sure Omar will make it a 3 year deal, just to make sure)! As long as he is only keeping the position warm for Davis. 2010 is probably pushing it, but man, it would be great to see him finish strong, then maul AAA next year and force a mid-season call up. Say, right when Delgado hits the DL again!

Tatis with the douple plays is just full-on, high-comedy.

dulcetpine July 24, 2009 at 8:33 pm

i didn’t think it was funny three weeks ago, but now that I have gone into traditional mets fan mode (zero expectations), its typical, and of course, humorous.

2009_believe July 24, 2009 at 11:10 pm

first off can somebody explain to me why angel berroa is still playing on a Major League roster? there has to somebody else to play

and no to delgado next year, he is old, i realize he has pop in his bat but we need to move his salary and his old aching body off this team, go young with fire.

fortleemets July 25, 2009 at 1:29 am

Here in the first line of an article from the NY Times on March 8th: “Alex Rodriguez ended the uncertainty over his injured right hip, at least temporarily, by choosing to have arthroscopic surgery Monday morning in Vail, Colo. The decision should have him out of action for six to nine weeks and allow him to return to the Yankees’ lineup in mid-May.” A-Rod rejoined the team on May 8th.

Can you tell me one instance in which the Mets were correct in their initial injury estimates? Wasn’t Reyes day-to-day initially? Beltran’s knee was “sore”. How can the Yankees always be spot on, but the Mets are seemingly in spoils?

sincekindergarten July 25, 2009 at 6:45 am

Because the Yankees medical staff got training from places like Cornell, and the Mets medical staff got their degrees out of a bubble-gum machine.

letsgometsgo1986 July 25, 2009 at 11:06 am

I suspect that the Met’s training staff has the same mentality as Belichick and Mangini. Don’t tell anyone your weakness. Stupid, especially here, where fans are loud and want answers.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain July 25, 2009 at 7:45 am

Holliday and Pujols want to play for the Mets. They love queens and want to play here because pedro played here. They also enjoy the large contracts with easy DL access.

Holliday will not sign with the Cards, he will sign with the Mets in the offseason.

Pujols will sign with the Mets when his contract is up.

Lorenzo23 July 25, 2009 at 10:19 am

LOL Dont forget the main reason why they want to come here. So their home run production could decrease by playing in the largest ball park in all of baseball. Thats very appealing to them.

Agee's Catch July 25, 2009 at 10:47 am

I think we can get something for Wagner before August 31. He could contribute in LA and we know they have talent .

letsgometsgo1986 July 25, 2009 at 11:07 am

Nobody wants to help the Mets. Wagner will not be traded. Maybe he will be a type 1 free agent and at least we can recoup a draft pick
