Buzz: Something Buzzing around the Mets

By Matthew Cerrone on Jul 27, 2009, 1:41 pm

Update, 2:01 pm:

The Mets have announced Omar Minaya will hold a press conference with reporters today from Citi Field at 3:30 pm, which will air live on SNY.

well, either a trade is going down, or the axe is about to fall

i’m betting on the axe, considering last week’s headlines

…they scheduled this for the exact moment the clubhouse opens, so they’re gonna pull everyone in to the media room, and rock

Original Post:

there are rumblings around the Mets that some sort of news will go down today… but, i have no idea what…

…i would think if it was a trade, by now, someone, from one of the major news outlets would be reporting something, but who knows… i’m intrigued

Prior to the Rubin revelations, no. But now, yes I would be surprised. The Wilpons can’t be this dumb.

When Cuban took over, Mavs were worst team in basketball. He turned them into consistent winner and one of best shows in sports.

The Mavs were some atrocious Dick Bavetta/Bennett Salvatore calls away from winning it all in 06.

For being a horrific in-game manager, I’d say. Lineups, pitching changes, first-inning sacrifices… it’s really disgusting watching him manage.

    • thedude
      Jul 27, 2009, 1:47 pm at 1:47 pm #

Because he’s not a good manager. Has nothing to do with this year, though, which is all about injuries.

In love with the sacrifice, yanks players around order/positions, sells players out to media to protect himself, etc.

    The prodigal son returns???

CHIBA, Japan — Bobby Valentine says he won’t be back with the Chiba Lotte Marines next season even as the Japanese team’s fans lobby management to keep him.

Lotte management decided before this season that it could not afford Valentine and would not renew his contract.

That brought protests from Lotte fans, who staged nightly vigils at Chiba Marine Stadium and submitted a petition to Lotte’s front office with more than 100,000 signatures.

The team has struggled this year and is 15 games behind the Pacific League-leading Nippon Ham Fighters.

In a statement on his Web site, Valentine says leaving the team “is best for the Chiba Lotte Marines.”

The 59-year-old Valentine led the team to the Japan Series championship in 2005 and has been a fan favorite ever since.

Prodigal son…..until the team goes through a losing season, and he doesn’t stop yapping his mouth about silly things while he keeps himself as the center of attention.

Remember when Manny Acta was all the rage until people found out he sucks as a manager?

Well, Bobby V is good…..but he wore out his welcome here once already. If the Wilpons want to make him their Billy Martin….then so be it, I guess.

      • thedude
        Jul 27, 2009, 1:55 pm at 1:55 pm #

Seriously, how was Manny Acta not able to win 100 games with that Nationals team?

I mean, that rotation of Tim Redding, John Lannan, Odalis Perez, Jay Bergmann and Collin Ballester should have been good for at least 80 wins.

And how come he wouldn’t let any of his players have more than 14 home runs or 61 RBIs?

      • methead
        Jul 27, 2009, 1:59 pm at 1:59 pm #

Bobby V. did not wear out his welcome with the people that matter, the fans. Fact is, they won under him. Actually, he squeezed a lot out of average ball players not to mention he knows how to manage properly.

He would be great for this team.

      • wnymetsfan
        Jul 27, 2009, 2:01 pm at 2:01 pm #

I do not think he wore out his welcome. Phillips and Valentine did not get along. Wilpons made the horrible decision of backing Phillips instead of the guy who got the Mets to a WS with Timo Perez, Agbayani and Payton as the starting OF.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have good news to think about? If I’m excited about hearing the “big news” does that mean ’09 hasn’t gotten me totally jaded and cynical yet? Hope so!

If I had to bet, tho, I’d go with Bernazard. I’d put the odds at 40% that he’s fired, 60% that they’ll announce why he’s staying.

Totally, did not think of this until your comment. But that is absolutely what this press conference is –

Investigation over, the actions were not as extreme as reported, Bernazard will be reprimanded internally, this issue is closed.

If they hold a 3pm press conference to not fire someone that would be pretty in line with the Mets failed public relations through the years.

just a follow up, how could they really keep tony b, its bad enough that they kept him for this long while they “investigated”

  22. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain
    Jul 27, 2009, 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm #

If its related to a Tony B firing, what is the purposes of a press conference? Is one really needed for a beheading such as this?

It may be a hiring. Perhaps Bobby V or Manny Acta has been hired as a consultant. That would be just the Mets type of move to hire a manager-in-waiting so that Jerry could be looking over his shoulder for the rest of the season and the announcers and media would have additional angle to exploit.

Trade? You are right, no chance of that since there has not been a single mention of it.

Could it be an announcement that a player on the DL is to be shut down for good (i.e. Beltran to have surgery)? Could be that as well.

Glad we fans do not jumpt to conclusions too fast.

  25. wlaadair
    Jul 27, 2009, 2:21 pm at 2:21 pm #

I doubt its about Bernazard since Minaya seems to have a blind spot and probably does not want it to be an issue.

  26. JINBK
    Jul 27, 2009, 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm #

It’s probably going to be a minor announcement that could have easily come from a press release or statement, but they’re putting on a show to deflect some of the ‘Mets have not communicated well on any front’ criticism the team’s been hit with this season.

  27. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain

Hey, wait. Weren’t the Mets suppose to refurbish to some extent Citifield. You know, fix a couple of the thousands of complains from ticket holders?

Maybe thats what it about … to tout how responsive the Mets have been to ticketholders complaints and requests.
