The way I see it, if the Mets want to pull off a miracle and win the Wild Card, they need to go roughly 45–20 during these final 65 games of the season.
The Mets begin a 10–game homestand tonight.
The first series will be four games against the Rockies, who lead the Mets by 7.5 games for the Wild Card race.
The Mets need to win this series, it’s that simple.
The thing is, it’s not just these 10 home games, it’s the next 28 games, during which 21 will be in Citi Field.
What’s more, most of the 28 games are against teams they are chasing, as well as the lowly D-Backs and Padres.
In other words, in the mode of Lloyd Christmas, there is a chance, because if the Mets can win a bulk of these next 28 games, they will also be tacking on losses for the very teams they are chasing.
“We’ve got a shot,” Jeff Francoeur told reporters yesterday evening. “We’ve got 65 games left, and I guarantee you every person on this team will fight their asses off to the end.”
I like Francoeur’s spirit.
28 more games.
Play hard, play smart, maybe get some players back from injury, beat the teams ahead of you, and, hopefully, you can make this interesting, Frenchy.
In other words, like Johnny G would say, ‘Let’s do this.’

The key to anything remotely happing this year is Pelfrey. Despite only showing flashes, Omar designated him as the No.2 starter. It is time for him to start acting like it and putting together a second half like he had last year.
Wow, I like Francoeur’s spirit!! Been awhile since I’ve heard a met talk like that. I’m liking his acquisition a lot—can’t imagine Church or anyone else on this team talking like that! Go Mets!
I love his interviews, I heard him say “pissed,” and now “ass” in two interviews which I like to hear. Love the spirit, and hopefully he is willing to continue listening to other guys and make the necessary adjustments in the box
As Kevin Garnett said, “Anything is possible!!!” But I highly doubt the Mets are going to play .692 ball for the rest of the season. AND that doesn’t guarantee them a spot, it just puts them in the mix. It has to be done one game and series at a time and the Mets need to find a way to take 3 of 4 from Colorado. Lets start there. If they can’t do that there is no reason to believe they are in it.
Agreed. The Mets do this to us everytime. Remember when they took 3 out of 4 from St Louis and we all thought, now they have a chance? Then they went into a tailspin.
They need to win 8 in a row or the next 15 out of 18 before I start thinking they have a chance this season.
Thats exactly why I LOVED the Frenchy move! If there are still some fans that still rather have Church the DEAD BEAT on this team than quite frankly you are wrong. Besides Frenchy’s huge upside at age 25 the guy fights and has a desire to win. I take him over church any day of the week.
Lets go Mets! Big series starts tonight….
Omar make a friggin move – you keep saying we are buyers…put your money where your mouth is..
what move are u talking about? There isnt anyone good available for the price the mets are asking…i felt there was 2 bats that coulda been a big boost to the mets…holliday and dunn…..holliday is in st louis…hopefully omar signs him in the offseason…..if there is any move for omar to make i think its a SPer….he seems to be in love with fmart…but fmart and others get u roy halladay….mets would have 2 of the best 3 pitchers in baseball….but with that being said that seems highly unlikely and i wouldnt be surprised if omar doesnt do anything cause theres 3 guys who would be worth getting…holliday…halladay…dunn…..1 is gone and the 2 left are too expensive it seems…specially dunn…hes a big slugger no doubt but hes not worth top prospects.
Calm down a bit. Francouer has had a good two week run. Lets see if he can keep it going now.
For most Met fans, they had no problem moving Church, however, there is a lot of reason to doubt Francouer as much as Church.
seriously…what do you want him to trade for? Do you think he sitting in his office saying “nah i am not makign this trade, the player makes too much money” or “nah, I dont need to make a trade.” He can’t just MAKE a trade. He has pulled off some great trades over the years (mostly in the offseason) but somehow I dont think this trade deadline there will be one.
Actually yes I do think his trade options are limited because of the Wilpons finances.
And one of the trades I’m referring to is Roy Halladay and maybe an Alex Rios if available. Both players would fit nicely at Citi Field. Considering our payroll is well below last seasons I dont see why it would be a problem.
The problem is the Mets have nothing the Jays want – at leat for Halladay. They just rejected a pretty strong offer from the Phillies and the Mets don’t have the horses to offer something better, unless they are willing to gut the entire farm system. In which case, you need to vow never to complain about the Mets thin farm system for the next 5 seasons.
Rios is another story. But perhaps all those stories about the Jays being willing to give him up for a bag of balls didn’t have as much truthiness as we originally thought.
Oh and heres another one… Padres are listening to offers for Adrian Gonzalez whose under a cheap contract thru 2011. Im not saying they will trade him but I’d offer the entire farm for him considering our first base need for this season and next. Plus the guy plays in a stadium as big as ours and he still puts up huge numbers.
The entire farm system? Really? With Blalock and LaRoche being available as FA this offseason? Seriously dude?
Are you serious Laroche (doesnt like Beltran))???? And Blalock is hitting .254 and hits a lot of homeruns cause he plays in a little league ball park (Texas) – Its like hitting in Yankee Stadium.
Adrian Gonzalez is young, has a cheap contract, hits in a huge stadium, and is the best first baseman in baseball (besides Pujols). I give the Padres a huge package for him. And since his contract is so cheap we could go out and sign a nice left fielder and some much needed starting pitching!
And we all know, now the Wilpon’s are not going to be interested in keeping Francoeur around becuase he’s “vulgar.” I hope he’s right, if at nothing else I’d like to see the Mets play spoiler at the end of this season. After the last 65 games is when the real party gets started.
NEVER HAPPEN!! Unless we get some guys back from the DL. As the team stands now we dont have enough to climb over 7 teams.
If we get Reyes Baltran & Delgado back in the next few weeks, then we might have a shot.
I’m only a little confident in a rotation of Santana – Ollie – Pelfrey – Livan – Neise. I’d like to see Cliff Lee in a Mets uniform. I think we are a dominant starter away from making a splash.
Jerry has a short bench. There isn’t a bat in sight. The stars were bright, Fernando, but alas, now they are not. time to cut bait on Tatis.
There is so much wrong to even think about .692 baseball. I might be happy just to reach .500
There is a great article in the NY POST about Hendu and his HOF stats. He says that Reyes could steal 100 bases if he keeps it up. I agree that when Reyes stopped stealing bases thats when the METS went south. 2006 was so exciting because when Reyes got on first you knew it was a matter of minutes before we would score. Now he gets on base and steals once in a while? He needs to steal everytime he gets on base, keep the pressure on the pitcher.
Nice quotes but did he leave his shirt on?
Please activate Billy Wagner, and then trade him! He might be a class A FA, but wouldn’t we have to offer him arbitration to get the picks? Would we really want to pay him that much?
you would have to offer arb…but i really doubt billy would stay here…he’d be the 7th…maybe 8th inning guy…he could get a closer job somewhere if he proves hes healthy…id take a chance and offer arb and maybe get some picks
That seems like something taught in a Roster Management 201 class. Our GM hasn’t passed the 101 course yet…
Gimme a break dude.
no need to rush to activate Wagner, if he can get pitching in the majors in August he could be moved via waivers.
It would be foolish to give this guy arbitration, the ruling would go toward his current salary as a closer, then the same people making fun of Minaya not being 101 compotent would come back and say how could he get stuck with Wagner for another year at $10M
seeing how wagner has been since joining the mets im pretty sure he doesnt care about the money they offer him and would rather go to a team where he can close…
Do you know how arbitration works? If the Mets offer him arbitration and he agrees, then no one shows him any mind from the first day of free agency up through his day to accept the Mets and he are then tied together. Arbitration is binding once it is agreed to, not optional.
Don’t the Mets have an $8M option on Wagner next season?
If you think the only shot we have at the WC is to go 45-20, then forget about it. It is not happening. The only shot we have is if the other teams struggle a bit and the WC winner is 87-88 wins. Not unrealistic. First, lets win tonight before we get way ahead of our selves though.
Bring up Tobi Stoner as the 7th inning guy. Have him enter to “I Need a Miracle”
If we make a run we can credit the Dead. I bet someone with same talent could morph a picture of Jerry Manuel into Jerry Garcia.
We’re talking 7 in the loss column. if we can trim it to 4 by Wednesday, then I think Omar should be buying. If we only inch up to 6, then selling really should be considered
there is nothing to sell, the Mets point of view should simply rest on the idea of getting back good assets in any trade that help them beyond the next two months. If they can make deals that get them players in uniform through at least 2010, then they should be considered.
Halladay and Lee fit the bill, as does Kazmir.
If your definition of sell is buy, what is your definition of buy?
Kazmir does, but Halladay and Lee not so much.
I would be after Halladay if it meant getting say Rios and taking a chance on changing his scene as he is fairly young and can play a corner outfield spot.
I was more interested in Halladay when it seemed plausible that Reyes, Delgado and Beltran might return, which is now seeming unlikely.
totally agree. there is nothing to sell.
We haven’t won more than 2 in a row since May. I’m as guilty as the next one in thinking that the Mets are still in this when I see them win a couple of games and start hitting a little bit (felt good going into ASB after beating Cicny twice) but it isn’t realistic.
We MUST win at least 3 of 4 against the Rockies. If not, we can just focus on next season. If we can somehow get hot over next 2 weeks and get Reyes back, I’ll start to really believe. But we’re not getting Halladay or Dunn. There just isn’t a big move out there for us with the people we have. We have to hope that we get solid starting pitching and Wright, Francoer, Castillo, etc. hit well enough to get us at least 4 runs most games with some of our injured getting back over the next few weeks.
There’s a chance. Definitely.
There is also a chance that I grow a foot in a week.
There is also a chance that I win the lottery today.
There is also a chance that Mr. Met becomes the new host of The Tonight Show.
In other words, sure they mathematicall have a shot, but it’s about a long of a shot as has ever been seen in baseball. These guys are not going to do what the Rockies did a few years ago and run the table in the last 5 five weeks for the simple fact that they aren’t healthy and won’t get healthy.
We keep hearing, “Wait until the injured get back.” Hello, when they get back the only thing they’ve proven is that they are healthy, but does that mean they will be in game shape? No. It’ll be spring training all over again for many of them.
I agree with you for the most part however if the Mets could come within 5 games in the Wild Card by the beginning of August which is possible if we win this 4 game series, and with Reyes almost ready to come back and if Omar brings in some help by the deadline (he said we are buyers) than I think we have a better chance than you think… Who knows…I gotta try and keep myself into baseball for the next two months or it will be very boring..
Here’s the thing – if the Mets are smart they shut down Reyes for the year. A torn hamstring is not something to mess with especially for a guy whose main asset is speed.
Hamstring can take months to heal. When I was younger I had a pull my hamstring playing ball. I didn’t let it rest properly, played on it too soon and then reinjured it even worse. I should have learned my lesson, but no I rested for a few week and then tried to play on in too early and reinjured even worse to the point that walking hurt.
So my doctor finally lectured me and told me that unless I shut it down for the season and did not play any sports for 4 months that I could risk severly tearing it.
I’m not saying Reyes is the same case, but why risk it. he already admits that when he comes back he’ll only be 80% healthy. Why risk it?
Its a torn hamstring Tendon – NOT a torn hamstring… most athletes play thru it and doctors agree that they could play thru it…
If it was the hamstring I would agree with you but its a tendon.
Well the METS do control there own destiny. IF and thats a big if, they can get hot and win a bunch of games, I mean more than 2 in a row, we may have a chance. They have to wake up and play some sharo baseball. If they dont make it then its there own fault.
