The Mets have won three games in a row.
…as i said yesterday, the way i see it, if the Mets want to pull off
a miracle and win the Wild Card, they need to go roughly 45–20 during their final 65 games of the season… last night was a good start, beating the wild-card leading Rockies to start a 10–game homestand…
“It has to start somewhere,” Francoeur explained after last night’s game. “It’s been a rough season, but you sit there and say we still have 60, 65 games left. We can still make a run. Nobody on this team is giving up.”
Following Sunday’s win against the Astros, Francoeur said:
“We’ve got a shot… and I guarantee you every person on this team will fight their asses off to the end.”
Francoeur is 5 for 15 with two HR and eight RBI during the team’s last four games, during which they are 3–1 with 29 runs scored.
He is batting .326 with 15 RBI in 13 games since joining the Mets.
Last week, on WFAN, Jerry Manuel said Francoeur has had a positive influence on the clubhouse, noting he is very team-oriented, and loves to work and ask questions about how he can improve his game.
…despite being allergic to drawing a walk, i wonder if frenchy helped to pump the team up a bit… players will tell you, quietly, that having a new, fresh face and voice in the locker room can sometimes help wake people up… he doesn’t have to be a star… just new stories, a new approach and a fresh look at things can help re-focus people… maybe francoeur is that guy… or, maybe the Mets are just hitting again… either way, i like it…

Maybe the trade was his wake up call.
If the team can win every series, this is possible. LETS GO METS !!!
Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in…
If you look at the rest of the Mets schedule they have a bunch of games against their divisional rivals and/or teams ahead of them in the WC standings:
6 against the Rockies (3 home/3 away)
4 against the Giants (at home)
2 against the Cards (at home)
9 against the Braves (6 at home)
6 against the Marlins (3 at home)
3 against the Astros (at home)
8! against the Phillies (4 home/4 away)
That’s 38 of the next 64 games.
They really have to thread the needle, but the WC is a distinct possibility.
Im actually glad we have someone willing to swing the bat early batting 5th. As you can see from the results, actually putting the ball in play tends to results in RBIs. Church was all walks, singles and GIDPs, he hadnt driven the ball since his 2nd concussion.
Wright has got to be relieved as well, and we’re starting to see that in his approach at the plate. No more having to do it all by himself, AND finally, someone else on the team talks to the media.
Honestly, I just cant wait till everyone gets back, even if its next year, I think Wright and Francoeur will go on a tear around Delgado and Beltran
Delgado won’t be back next year.
X, he may be back next year actually. It all depends on the Mets and what approach they take with him. From what I’ve read, at this point, Delgado is still considered a Type A player.
So, at the end of the season the Mets could outright release him but, if they do that, they won’t get any draft picks for him.
Or, they could keep him and offer him arbitration – hoping he declines and eventually gets released.
Or, they could offer arbitration and he accepts.
I dunno, at this point, I’m not sure if I would welcome Delgado back or be upset. If he’s healthy, why not; it’s only one year. I’d like to see him play later this season so the Mets can gauge how he’ll recover.
If you look at the free agent class next season it looks like there aren’t many options out there. Daniel Murphy looks good with the glove but his bat isn’t quite ready yet. I think bringing Delgado back on a year to year basis is a good move.
If you have any plans of playing Murphy at 1B long term, then he’s got to be your guy next year. You can’t bring a guy like Delgado in as insurance, nor can you tell Murphy that he’s a pinch hitter for a year or two.
True but who would you rather have at the plate? Delgado or Murphy? I realize he’s getting old but I’d still rather have Delgado. He’s got power still, can’t deny that and our line up is significantly lacking in that department. I’m not lobbying for him to return; if he doesn’t I’ll be fine with it (more salary room) but, if he returns, I certainly won’t mind.
Frankly I hope the Mets trade both of them in the offseason and go for either Adam LaRoche or Blalock at 1B. Maybe invite Xavier Nady to ST to see what he has left and if he’s any good, have him play backup at 1B/LF.
Agee, I respectfully disagree with you. I dont have long term plans for Murphy. In fact I think ultimately he should be a bench player/pinch hitter. The love affair for Murphy (like the one many people had with Church) has to end becuase in the end we need guys that can produce consistently. Delgado produces, like Xavier said, Blalock and LaRoche produce. Murphy, yes he is young, is hitting .240 with no power. If he played second base we could live with it, but 1st base we can not. I’m sorry but I’m not going thru another season with Murphy as an experiment to see if he could “possibly” handle the position. We tried it in left field and he failed and his bat so far has proven it isnt good enough for 1st base. If you want to experiment with something do it in the minor leagues.
That being said, I agree with Xavier that a proven bat such as a LaRoche or Blalock should be considered next season or even Delgado (better than all three of them) should be back on a year to year basis.
I’d be very surprised to see Delgado in a Mets uniform next year. I just don’t see him fitting into the Mets plans.
I can see them picking up Delgado’s option and trading him to an AL team for someone useful (hopefully) But he has DH written all over him at this stage in his career.
Are you sure Delgado has an option? We picked it up this year – I dont know if he has another one.
I heard somewhere the Mets have some sort of option with Delgado in 2010 – I could be wrong though.
Yea he is definitely a free agent. We picked up his option for 2009..
I don’t think Delgado will accept arbitration — at his age, with his injuries this year, he won’t get as much in arbitration as he would from a hitting-desperate team.
Giving credit where it is due. Francouer has been a leader. I think it is a matter of right place and time. if he came in hitting .226 instead of .326, the conversation would be about what a horrible trade this was by Omar, and another reason why he should be fired (as if there aren’t enough)
I think this will help Wright because he shouldn’t feel the need to carry the team.
Props to Murphy in the cleanup slot. We’re 3-0 with him there. Mad bunt in the 8th. Anyone else would have beaten it out, it was so well placed.
I don’t think it will ever be looked at as a horrible trade because let’s be honest, Ryan Church isn’t anything special.
Exactly – Ryan Church played hard but lets be honest he is a glorified number 4 outfielder. When we look back at this move in a few years it will turn out to be one of Omars best.
More credit goes to John Ricco, he was the one who said to go after francoeur….i dont think omar is smart enough to realize that francoeur could be gotten cheap and was a star in the making in atlanta
That is true but Omar had to approve it. Omar gave all the credit to John Ricco because as you said John was the one that came up with the idea. Or maybe John listened to WFAN because I heard some of the talk show hosts bring it up a while ago, including Matt Cerrone.
6 in the loss column……
Sandwich a left-handed 1B/LF with power between Wright and Frenchy and we’d be cooking
I also read that Reyes is possibly 10 days away from playing again? Is the true? Where do Delgado and Beltran stand?
If you believe the Mets, Reyes has been 10 days away from playing since he went down with the injury. I wouldn’t start getting your hopes until he actually plays a few rehab games.
Agreed. I’m just trying to see what the timeline is until we get some sort of normal team back together.
From what I’ve read, Reyes needs to run the bases next, which is the last step before playing in some rehab games. He is supposed to do that “any day now”
Assuming he does that by the end of this week, he could be in rehab games next week and re-activated in early August.
If all goes well…
No idea about a timeline. Mets are smart not to make one…They did in May and it blew up.
Complete speculation, let’s say 1 week before he plays in a rehab game, best case. That would be then, say 10 days in minors…and then back with us, barring no setbacks which is no guarantee.
Best case, he’s with us in 20 days.
we wee frenchie!!! Lets roll…
If we could get Reyes and Wagner back, we would be stronger at short and on the bench, and our pen would be stronger. Add Beltran and delgado in August and September, we actually look like a playoff team.
Remember last year how Evans and Murphy came up and gave the team a shot in the arm?
Perhaps Frenchy and Niese are this year’s version…
Wright trying to be the leader since Delgado went down, Frenchy comes and in 2 days takes that role away from him. Haaa
Wright was not trying to be the leader, he was told by Jerry Manuel that he had to step up his game in Delgado’s absence, big difference.
Beltran — shut it down, let’s go get ‘em next year.
As for Francoeur, even though I think in the long run, he’ll regress to where he was in Atlanta, I have to admit he’s fun to watch.
I don’t think Francoeur has taken any leadership role away from Wright. What Francoeur has done is simply become a reliable “go to” guy for the reporters. And heck, Wright really needed someone else for the media to go to. This had long been an issue for the Mets — getting stand up guys after the games. Now they don’t have to ask Wright the same questions night after night when they lose. I’m sure Wright welcomes Francoeur and his outgoing personality. It takes the pressure off him.
Fans can also use a fresh post game face. Wright and his dopey answers are tiring.
I agree. I don’t want to see the same face game after game simply because there is no one else to interview.
However, as for Wright’s “dopey” answers, I don’t know what else he could have said. Maybe he should have torn off his shirt, challenged reporters to a fight, and cursed them out with profane references to the female anatomy? Would that have made you feel better?
lol…that would be great.
“you think I aint a leader!…I can’t hit in the clutch!..F you, F you, you’re cool, and F you, peace Im out.”
What would you have him say? At least he’s accountable to the media after the games and does not throw anyone under the bus.
It seems you’re asking him to break out of his typecast of giving the interviews,he is who he is, give him a break already, enough is enough.
