Mets have announced that tonight’s game against the Rockies has been postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled for tomorrow night, Thursday, July 30 at 7:10 p.m. as the second game of a separate admission day-night doubleheader.
…this is better than sending Johan Santana out there, then having the game canceled…
…at the same time, i hate to see the team get a night off, seeing as how well they were playing…
According to a team press release, the regularly scheduled Thursday day game against the Rockies will begin at 12:10 p.m. Upon the conclusion of the day game, all fans will exit Citi Field in advance of the 7:10 p.m. game.
In other words, tickets from tonight’s rainout WILL NOT be honored for admission to the 12:10 pm game.

Jerry Manuel is scheduled to be a guest today on WFAN’s drive-time show, at 5 pm, hosted by Mets fans Evan Roberts and Joe Benigno.
Update, 5:20 pm:
Manuel said Tony Bernazard had no affect on the clubhouse, be it before he was fired or after. Instead, Manuel feels the team is just playing better baseball, including the first game in Houston.
According to Newsday’s David Lennon, Carlos Beltran is wearing a knee brace and hitting in the indoor batting cage.
To keep tabs on other pre-game notes, including whether Luis Castillo will play during tomorrow’s day game, read Lennon on Twitter.
…i’m giddy… i know i shouldn’t be, but i am…
…i keep thinking of the Blue Brothers, and the constant talk of getting the band back together…
…it’s hard to believe, i know, but i get the sense Jose Reyes will be back in a couple of weeks, followed by beltran and Carlos Delgado, then Billy Wagner and J.J. Putz… i have little faith in maine… and, of course, it is all subject to set backs, and who knows what… again, first put on a uniform, then play in a rehab game… one step at a time…
Earlier this week, Beltran told reporters the bone bruise on his knee has not improved. However, he has been hitting, throwing and running in a pool and has every intention of getting back on the field.
Beltran said the doctor advised against increasing his workload because the pain and bruise will not go away until he stops activity altogether. However, “I want to get back as soon as I can,” he said. “I wanted to try. I decided to do it… Right now, I’m not thinking about resting. I’m thinking about how I can get back.”
Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes the Indians will trade C Victor Martinez before Friday’s 4 pm Trade Deadline.
“I don’t think they’d move (Cliff Lee, who
was traded to the Phillies today) without moving (Martinez),” Olney quotes an American League official as saying.
…as i said earlier, there is no buzz that i can find, be it online or from people i know, suggesting the Mets might be involved with martinez… it seems to me, even if they want martinez, the Red Sox are a far more likely destination because they are drowning in pitching prospects and are feeling pressure to make a deal…
…that said, i wish the Mets would get involved in talks with the Indians and Rays… i think there is a three-way deal there that should be pursued, which could send a young, under-contract hitter to the Mets, pitching to the Indians, and martinez to the Rays… i have no idea if these teams are talking about this, but they should…

The Mets (48–51) continue their series against the Rockies (55–46) tonight, with Johan Santana (11–8, 3.12 ERA) facing Jason Hammel (5–5, 4.28 ERA).
…the tarp has been on the field, but the word from Citi Field is that the game will get played tonight… we’ll see…
Angel Pagan will hit leadoff tonight, followed in order by Luis Castillo, David Wright, Daniel Murphy at first, Jeff Francoeur in right, Cory Sullivan in left, Omis Santos behind the plate and Alex Cora.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes the Giants are definitely getting 2B Freddy Sanchez from the Pirates.
…for a while, i though maybe the Mets would
have interest in sanchez… but, given how well Luis Castillo is playing, the potential that Jose Reyes could be back in August, to trade prospects to get sanchez, who can be a free at the end of this season, seems foolish at this point…
Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Giants have discussed prospects John Bowker, Kevin Frandsen and Jesus Guzman with Pittsburgh.
…from what i can tell, the Giants and Pirates have been working on a deal for sanchez for quite some time…however, the word from out west had been that the Giants would need to send LHP Jonathan Sanchez to the Pirates in a deal for sanchez… but, perhaps things have changed…
Sanchez, 31, won a batting title in 2006, after which he hit .304 in 2007 and .271 last season. He will likely earn $8 million next season, after which he is eligible to be a free agent.
He has played mostly second base, with some time at short and third.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes the Rays have shopped LHP Scott Kazmir to the Mets and Rangers.
According to Sherman, “Tampa is trying to see if they could trade Kazmir, Carlos Pena and in the right blockbuster even Carl Crawford to free up dollars to make a bigger trade.”
…the buzz around baseball seems to be that if the crawford is to be traded, it will be in the off season, and not this week before Friday’s July 31 Trade Deadline… the same can be said for Blue Jays OF Alex Rios and Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez…
…from what I can gather, the Rays and Mets have talked… however, i have zero idea what they’ve talked about… i believe the Mets are still looking for offense… i also believe they are skeptical, but intrigued by kazmir, because he’s making too much money considering questions about his health, work ethic and stamina…
…however, from listening to reporters, talk radio and people around the game, it sounds like the Rays are trying to essentially trade kazmir and a bat, like a crawford or pena, to get Victor Martinez from
the Indians, among other things, and will do whatever they have to do to make it happen…
The 27–year-old Crawford is batting .311 with a .372 OBP, 30 extra base hits and 48 stolen bases this season for the Rays.
Crawford has a $10 million team option for 2010, after which he can become a free agent.
…damn, man, he is a perfect fit for Citi Field… he’s a good defender, but in the box and on the basepaths he is a tailor-made for that building, short of being yet another left-handed hitter…
Tagged Scott Kazmir |Joe Demayo of NY Baseball Digest believes the Mets and Yankees have interest in Pirates LHP John Grabow.
In a post to Twitter, Heyman also lists Nationals LHP Joe Beimel and Jays LHP Scott Downs as potential candidates.
Original Post, 12:30 pm:
This afternoon on WFAN, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said the Mets met yesterday to discuss the trade deadline, and, among other things, are looking for a left-handed reliever to take pressure off Pedro Feliciano.
Tagged Pedro Feliciano |Yesterday, Jeff Wilpon said of Mets GM Omar Minaya, “Right now, the idea is, Omar is our general manager, period… He’s going to be our GM.”
In a report for Newsday, Wallace Matthews writes:
‘“He’s this close to being out of baseball,’ Wilpon told me, holding his thumb and forefinger a half-inch apart.”
…wallace is the only guy to write this, so i assume this was an exclusive moment between him and jeff… that said, it’s telling…
…personally, i can’t see minaya being fired, or
resigning, during the season… instead, the team is playing well, they’re on a roll, guys may be coming back from injury, and this is what it is… if the Mets slip, and return to falling, and miss the playoffs, regardless of injuries, i would not be shocked if omar is replaced… if the Mets pull off a miracle and make the playoffs, the vibe around them and the perception of the team will change, the story will be how minaya’s players pulled themselves up to make a miracle, and it will be a new day… frankly, knowing there is no way he is dismissed before the season ends, i’m looking to the results on the field… once the season is over, i want to know where the team is headed and what is their plan… if omar is the right man for the job, great… if not, it’s time to move forward… but, there are still 62 games to be played, and i am far more interested in what the current 25 guys and coaches are doing…
That said, in the New York Post, Jay Greenberg argues in favor of firing Minaya, while Mike Lupica, in the Daily News, says to judge Minaya on his body of work with the Mets, ‘not the Tony Bernazard mess.’
Tagged Omar Minaya |According to FoxSports.com, the Indians have traded LHP Cliff Lee and OF Ben Francisco to the Phillies for pitching prospects Jason Knapp and Carlos Carrasco, as well as SS Jason Donald and C Lou Marson.
…wow, that is three of the Phillies top four prospects, all for lee and francisco, in one shot, and marson was their 10th best prospect, according to Baseball America…
… in other words, the Phillies are going for it…
Update, 12:30 pm:
Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the
Phillies are very close to acquiring Indians LHP Cliff Lee, in a deal that will send RHP prospect Jason Knapp to Cleveland.
Lee is 7–9 with a 3.14 ERA.
He won the American League Cy Young Award last season, while going 22–3.
According to John Sickels of Minor League Ball Knapp began the year as Philadelphia’s third-best pitching prospect behind RHP Carlos Carrasco and J.A. Happ.
