Buzz: Giants will get Freddy Sanchez

Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes the Giants are definitely getting 2B Freddy Sanchez from the Pirates.

for a while, i though maybe the Mets would have interest in sanchez… but, given how well Luis Castillo is playing, the potential that Jose Reyes could be back in August, to trade prospects to get sanchez, who can be a free at the end of this season, seems foolish at this point

Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Giants have discussed prospects John Bowker, Kevin Frandsen and Jesus Guzman with Pittsburgh.

from what i can tell, the Giants and Pirates have been working on a deal for sanchez for quite some time…however, the word from out west had been that the Giants would need to send LHP Jonathan Sanchez to the Pirates in a deal for sanchez… but, perhaps things have changed

Sanchez, 31, won a batting title in 2006, after which he hit .304 in 2007 and .271 last season.  He will likely earn $8 million next season, after which he is eligible to be a free agent.

He has played mostly second base, with some time at short and third.

Well they are playing each other right now, so no better time to close a deal. Maybe the Giants didn’t want Sanchez pitching against them.

All the teams in the Wild Card race are doing something… Omar better friggin do something!!! Am I missing something here?

In a story involving two Sanchez’ it would help if you used their first names all the time. :)

Didn’t the Pirates just unload last year? and the year before that?

One of these times you would think they might actually like the players they acquire for more than a year of two and actually put a team together.

it must really stink to bea Pirates fan.

Here’s a team with a storied history, one of the Original Eight, had some great players in its day and is now basically a farm system for the rest of the MLB and hasn’t had a winning season in what, 15 years at least?

Talk about owners who really don’t care about a team. There should be a rule that if a baseball team does not have a winning record for 5 consecutive seasons, the owners should be forced to sell. It’s completely unfair to lifelong fans.

Absolutely. The problem is that they trade all of their in-demand, worthwhile talent for organizational filler. Time and time again, they get nothing. Jason Bay for…Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen. Really? Nady and Marte for Tabata, Ohlendorf, and Karstens? Wow.

Compound it by “landing” players like Matt Morris (highest salary in organizational history, when no one wanted him) and yes, Pirates fans must take solace in Steelers and Penguins’ success.

Victor Martinez is going to get moved.

Grote…Stearns…Carter…Hundley….Piazza… Schneider/Santos? Come on…make Victor the latest in the Mets great all-star catching tradition! Such a great fit.

Agreed a great fit, but what’s it going to take to get him……Hey where’s the lineup anyway?

How can you forget Choo Choo Coleman?

V-Mart certainly would be nice. Especially since Bengie Molina is really the only decent catcher hitting free agency this year. But he is going to cost a gaggle of prospects to get. Whatever package we might offer to the Indians for him I’d rather give to San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez.

The Mets do have C Josh Thole hitting .350 in Double A right now but the main reason he hasn’t moved up to AAA yet is because he’s still learning the catcher position so he’s still at least a year out.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the Mets just end up resigning Schneider this offseason. He only makes $5M this season and could probably be resigned on a 1 year deal for even less than that considering how injury prone he is.

if he resigns, it would be for less than 1 million. And yes, I am sure Omar will look to sign molina

Sampsonite168 July 29, 2009 at 4:21 pm

And apparently Sanchez made an offer to stay with the Pirates for 3 years/$20 million.

My question: Why?

Sampsonite168 July 29, 2009 at 7:02 pm

From MLBTR…

5:46pm: Henry Schulman at the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that it’s a done deal, Sanchez straight up for a minor-leaguer. Stay tuned for the name.

5:51pm: Kovacevic is reporting that the minor leaguer is AA pitcher Tim Alderson. This is an impressive haul for Sanchez–Alderson was ranked the #4 prospect in the Giants’ system by Baseball America. What we thought was a salary dump has turned into a coup for the Pirates.

Apparently Alderson is a really good prospect and most think the Pirates got the better end of the deal by far.
