Jon Heyman of SI.com says it doesn’t seem like the will Rays will make a trade before tomorrow’s 4 pm deadline, though they have been trying hard to acquire Indians C Victor Martinez.
That said, according to NY Baseball Digest, the Mets, Rays and Indians may be discussing a three-team deal that would send Martinez to the Rays.

…from what I can gather, the Rays and Mets have talked… however, i have zero idea what they’ve talked about… i believe the Mets are still looking for offense… i also believe they are skeptical, but intrigued by Scott Kazmir, because he’s making too much money considering questions about his health, work ethic and stamina…
Earlier in the week, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said the Rays have shopped Kazmir to the Mets and Rangers.
According to Sherman, “Tampa is trying to see if they could trade Kazmir, Carlos Pena and in the right blockbuster even Carl
Crawford to free up dollars to make a bigger trade.”
…like i said the other day, from listening to reporters, talk radio and people around the game, it sounds like the Rays are trying to essentially trade kazmir and a bat, like a crawford or pena, to get martinez from the Indians, among other things, and will do whatever they have to do to make it happen…
…if the Mets are looking for offense, and if they may need a center fielder, considering news of Carlos Beltran in the previous post, and if Jose Reyes is never going to be 100 percent this season, suddenly crawford makes even more sense than he did a few days ago… i have no idea if the Mets are interested in him, but the should be…
The 27–year-old Crawford is batting .313 with a .373 OBP, 31 extra base hits and 48 stolen bases this season for the Rays.
He has a $10 million team option for 2010, after which he can become a free agent.

Kazmir and Crawford would be a beautiful thing…Tomorrow should be an interesting day
i hope its kazmir and crawford…or just kazmir to the mets…carlos pena…eh never been a big fan…if mets get kazmir, rays get martinez, and indians get…something…id do that..
I hate to sound like a chick, I really do, but if we were to get Crawford and Kaz, I might just pee my pants. lol
Yup, I went there….
it would be a good deal for the mets…but who would the mets give up…kazmir is a young pitcher with #1 potential…and crawford is an allstar LFer/borderline allstar every year….i know rays would get v-mart…but that means mets top prospects go to indians? it would fill 2 needs in 1 trade…but id be skeptical about kazmirs health
I’m skeptical about the deal in general but, to be honest, if we were getting Crawford and Kaz we could afford to trade a combination of guys like FMart, Neise or Holt, etc.
I’m not saying I’d like to, or want to, but if the offer is on the table for both Crawford and Kaz, you have to make that deal.
That’s a visual I just didn’t need! lmao! Anyway I would be excited to get Crawford thats for sure and he certainly fits the mold of CItifield. Kazmir they would probably have to give the Mets some money with him, but well see! lol
I’m a little skeptical about kaz’s health also i think the bigger chip would be crawford especially teaming him with reyes – speed and defense is what this team should be built on playing in citifield
I too wonder, who would the mets be giving up in this deal?
If it doesn’t cost too many prospects to get Scott Kazmir, why not? The salary is not the issue in my mind. We don’t got enough to get Crawford or Pena. They’re really integral to the Rays success this season too. Kazmir is not having a good year at all (6.22 ERA), so the price will not be that high.
The move would do three things. One, it’d give us another quality starter for the rotation next season at somewhat of market value. He’s still young and would have trade value if it doesn’t work out. Two, it’d allow us to cut ties with John Maine. There’s no way this team holds onto two injury prone guy’s. Ollie Perez is typically a healthy pitcher – but it’s his mind that’s the question. If Kazmir can back to where he was in between 2005 and 2008, when we could have desperately used him, he’d be the perfect two to Johan. Pelfrey would be much more ideal as a 3 too.
What’s the third thing? Yeah, you got it. The complaining can stop! The ”what if’s” can end. Exactly 5 years later and we’d get back who should have been ours all along. The question is who will it cost? The Mets really should push for Crawford too since he fits our club and park so well. But if we can get Kazmir for Niese, Parnell or some combination of lower-to-mid level guys like Eddie Kunz and Ruben Tejada, it might be worth it. Those players would actually be going to Cleveland.
good point about the what-ifs although i may be in the minority i want to hold onto parnell, neise i like and he seems like a nice kid but i’m not againist trading him but parnell has seemed to finally find sucess in the bullpen and we all know how important that is to a team
your right, the mets should push for crawford, but if omar just got kazmir in the deal and didnt have to give up alot…id be fine…there will be good LFers on the FA market…with more pop which this team needs…
I like the thought of crawford batting 2nd and kazmir/pelf as the 2-3….but i wouldnt unload the farm in this deal because of kazmirs health issues mainly…and while he fits citi field well, i cant really see giving up top prospects for carl crawford…
So as i said…im kinda stuck….crawford and kazmir would be great…but at what cost? If the rays are willing to unload kazmir to the mets for relatively cheap id do that by itself….crawford might be a little too pricey..specially because omar seems set on holding onto the top 5 prospects
Trading prospects might be just as bad as losing draft picks though. Until the walls are moved up though, it doesn’t matter who has pop. If Crawford’s here, he’ll be batting second behind Reyes and Castillo will be moved into the 8th hole. The only other guy who’d be more ideal for such a situation is Orlando Hudson, but he will be pricey and seems to like LA.
I could easily see TB moving Kazmir and Pena to the mets, and the price (in talent) shouldnt be that steep, given the salary the mets would be picking up.
Crawford might cost you a bit more though!
Heck, get Kazmir and Pena, then pick up RIos for table scraps, and you filled ever 2009 off season hole except for replacing the catcher (and the usual couple of pen guys), and they can certainly work something out there.
I really hope its not pena….i think we all can agree that a guy who hits .215 with 24 HR(which will prob go down in citi, specially being left-handed) is not what this team needs….
I’m not seeing any of these rumors on the main reputable sports sites… ie. foxsports, espn, si.com etc… only on blogs… therefore I’m not going to get excited until I hear something from the sites that I trust to have accurate information
You just beat me to it….i was gunna say but before we go crazy trying to figure out who could be in the deal…i wanted to see someone with good credibility report it first…and it appears they havent done so..at least not yet….but u have to figure they would of found out by now if there was any truth to the rumor
Exactly – hopefully we hear more about this tomorrow
I’m a little skeptical of this rumor right now. I’d love something like this to go down. But it almost seems like another blog wrote as a rumor something Cerrone mentioned as an idea. Perhaps they misread it or just took it and ran w/ it for more hits on their web site?
Have a feeling we are going to be disappointed tomorrow like every other deadline under Omar’s term as GM… Guess we will find out soon enough…
if we get crawford and his legs
maybe we will trade reyes?
reyes to the indians
vmart to the rays
crawford/kazmir/pena to the mets?
Crawford and Reyes at citifield together is way too appealing. The more I think about it I would NOT trade Reyes considering the ball park we play in. He should be able to do incredible things at CitiField when he comes back healthy and into the future.
Going to bed, hoping Santa puts a gift under the tree tonight…
Carl Crawford? Where do I sign?!
I wish there would be an update for this blog with some positive news
Maybe it’s dreaming, but here’s how I could see it going down. It might take a little more. It’d depend on how bad the Rays want to shed salary.
Mets get: Carl Crawford, Scott Kazmir ((24.5MM guaranteed through end of 2011), Andy Sonnastine
Rays Get: Victor Martinez, Bobby Parnell
Indians get: Jefry Marte, Jon Niese, Nick Evans, Reid Brignac, Eddie Kunz
I doubt we’ll get Crawford though. Rays fans would be livid. He’s played his entire career there, is having a good year and they’re right there.
I would be happy with Aubrey Huff and not give much up in the process.
I want Omar to be accountable for his decisions and remarks! This morning in his daily apology, when asked if the distraction has caused him to lose sight of the trade deadline, he replied with something like, “we are on the phones and we turned down some trade already that if you heard the names offered to us you wouldn’t believe”…I think he’s just saying this as a defense mechanism response to everybody thinking he’s distracted. But for some reason this is true, when this is over, I want to know who he rejected!!!
Many fans have not gotten over Kazmir Nightmare I.
If the Mets acquire Kazmir again, I see a potential second nightmare, which would be 1000 times the first and would forever tag the Mets as a dupe.
Kazmir Potential Nightmare.
It would be seen at TB fleecing the Mets to acquire Kazmir (everying one knows this story). Using Kazmir in Kazmir’s healthy and inexpensive years, and then unloading Kazmir back to the Mets for a steep price (prospects or $$$) and then have Kazmir break down (which is what the Mets predicted in the first place and why he was traded).
The above would be too much. Such an occurrence would cause true fan ire. This would be the sort of move to cause the Mets to fire Omar.
