Los Mets lost to the Diamondbacks by the score of 3-2 tonight.

The Least You Should Know:
This was a well pitched effort by both teams, with Livan Hernandez going six innings while striking out four.
However, the Mets bullpen was leaky as Sean Green hit a batter in the eighth inning, then induced what seemed to be a big double play hit into by Miguel Montero with the bases loaded and nobody out, but then threw a wild pitch allowing Justin Upton to score the decisive run for Arizona.
David Wright and Daniel Murphy hit two long solo home runs, but they were the only two runs the Mets scored tonight.
The Mets got a break in the ninth inning on Mark Reynolds 17th error of the year – a dropped pop up – but then Angel Pagan promptly grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Other Observations and Notes:
It’s one thing to just lose, but to lose a game on a wild pitch stings even more.
With the home run, David Wright now has a ten game hitting streak, and is hitting .424 over that span.
The top four in the Mets lineup went 1 for 14 on the night.
The Mets as a team walked seven times, but none of those walks came around to score.
There have been way too many dropped pop ups in the Major Leagues this year.
It was nice to find out that Keith Hernandez never tipped the clubhouse kids well, but always took care of equipment manager Charlie Samuels.
The Mets continue their series against the Diamondbacks tomorrow night at 7:10 pm with Oliver Perez facing Max Scherzer.
The Mets start a four-game
series with the Diamondbacks tonight at 7 pm, with Livan Hernandez (7-5) squaring off against Doug Davis (5-10).
Angel Pagan will bat leadoff tonight, followed in order by Luis Castillo at second, David Wright, Jeff Francoeur, Fernando Tatis in left field, Daniel Murphy at first, Omir Santos behind the plate and Alex Cora at shortstop.
Mets GM Omar Minaya talked to reporters today from Citi Field, to answer questions about today’s non-waiver trade deadline.
According to Minaya, he and his staff were working on potential trades up until 4 pm, but, as he said, ‘We were just not able to get it done… We had some opportunities to do some things, but, in the end, I felt that what teams were asking for we couldn’t find a match.”
Minaya said one issue he had was knowing certain players would soon return from the disabled list, saying, “What are you gonna get for that player, and then what happens when the player comes back.”
Minaya was asked specifically about players who were traded, like Victor Martinez, who would likely have interested the Mets, to which he said:
“The cost would have probably been too high… You have to take in to account where you are in the standings, and you have to take in to account the prospects you have… One thing that has been good about this process has been that I got a good feel for a lot of the teams and how much they like our prospects. But, some of those prospects that some teams wanted were too high to give them, and we have some pretty good young prospects… Unless it is someone we were going to hold on to beyond one year, we’re gonna hold on to as many prospects as we can.”
Minaya said he needed to balance out being six games back of the Wild Card, and protecting his farm system, while considering no one player would make up for the number of players he has on the DL.
“There are things that I left on the table that we’ll be able to revisit later,” Minaya said, speaking of players who could be had through the waiver wire in August.
Tagged Omar Minaya |Mets SS Jose Reyes had a set-back this afternoon, Jerry Manuel told reporters prior to today’s game in Citi Field.
Reyes was unable to run hard around the bases, he explained, and there is no timetable for when he will do so.
Omar Minaya later said Reyes has two good days, then one bad day, and, ‘hopefully he
will start running the bases again this weekend.’ Reyes told Minaya he looks forward to getting back on the field tomorrow.
Minaya described a bad day for Reyes as being when he feels tightness in his leg.
Minaya also said Billy Wagner will pitch in a minor-league rehab game tonight for Florida State.
Minaya said John Maine is in St. Lucie, but still feels discomfort in his shoulder, and will continue to rest for a few days.
Carlos Beltran told Minaya he is feeling better, but they need to get him on the field and in to a rehab game before setting a definitive timetable for his return.
Jon Heyman of SI.com believes the Padres have, again, traded RHP Jake Peavy to the White Sox.
According to Buster Olney on ESPN News, the Sox approached Peavy about the deal less than one hour before the 4 pm deadline.
Peavy approved the deal, reports MLB.com.
Peavy has been on the disabled list since June 9 with a strained tendon in his right ankle, he is not expected back before late August.
Update, 4:41 pm:
The MLB Network reports the Padres will get prospects Clayton Richard, Adam Russell, Aaron Poreda and Dexter Carter.
Earlier this season, Peavy’s agent told SI.com his client would only accept a deal to a team in ‘Middle America.’
According to ESPN News, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com says the Blue Jays were unable to make a deal for RHP Roy Halladay.
Stark says the same can be said for the Padres, regarding 1B Adrian Gonzalez and closer Heath Bell.
…the sense i get, from reading, listening and talking to people during the last hour, is that most every deal was pretty fair, and there is no clear winner or loser in any of these moves, including what the Indians got for Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee…
…that said, people see the Dodgers and Rays as the big losers, mostly because they had the talent to do something, have needs, and didn’t pull the trigger… also, teams like the D-Backs and Royals seem to be on the losing side, because they have decent players making little money, who had suitors, and they sat on them – suggesting the the waiver wire could be active…
The Nationals have traded 1B Nick Johnson to the Marlins for minor-league LHP Aaron Thompson, according to FoxSports.com.
Johnson, who is batting .295 with a .408 OBP, will be a free agent at the end of this season.
Speaking of last-minute deals…
Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Blue Jays will send 3B Scott Rolen to the Reds, who, according to FoxSports.com, will send Edwin Encarnacion and a minor leaguer to Toronto.
Update, 4:10 pm:
The Mets have posted their lineup outside the clubhouse.
Original Post:
…the buzz around Citi Field continues to suggest the Mets will not be making any major deals today…
…the thing is, the Mets have yet to post a lineup… usually, it is posted just outside of the clubhouse the minute reporters are allowed in…
…in the end, i believe the Mets had options, but they chose to hang on to their top prospects, knowing a) players will be available on the waiver wire, and b) getting Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran and Billy Wagner is better than any one trade they could have possibly made…
The Nationals have traded LHP Joe Beimel to the Rockies, according to the Washington Post.
Earlier this week, on WFAN, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said the Mets were looking to acquire a left-handed reliever to take pressure off Pedro Feliciano.
In a post to Twitter, Heyman mentioned Beimel and Jays LHP Scott Downs as potential candidates.
Left-handed hitters are batting .233 against Beimel this season.
Update, 3:20 pm:
Gordon Edes of Yahoo! Sports says the Red Sox have traded 1B Adam LaRoche to the Braves.
…oh, joe d… never lead with your chin, my friend…
According to NESN, the Braves will send 1B Casey Kotchman to Boston.
Update, 3:14 pm:
Joe Demayo of NY Baseball Digest said earlier the Mets will acquire 1B Adam LaRoche from the Red Sox.
Demayo later explained, he was told the Mets and Red Sox had ‘a good grasp on a deal,’ but then the Marlins and Braves called.
“I may have jumped the gun a little,” he said.
The Marlins and Nationals had been in talks regarding 1B Nick Johnson, but, according to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins are not expected to complete a trade by 4 pm.
Update, 3:01 pm:
Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Red Sox are now shopping LaRoche, and the Braves are interested.
Meanwhile, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com believes the Dodgers are trying to acquire 1B Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres.
“If the Dodgers acquired Gonzalez,” Rosenthal says, “they presumably would send 1B James Loney to the Padres or trade him somewhere else.”
…damn, i would love for that some place else to be Citi Field… i am a big fan of loney’s… he’s smooth as silk, and even steven…
Update, 2:54 pm:
…the buzz around Citi Field suggests the Mets will not be making any ‘major deals,’ which is not necessarily a denial regarding laroche…
