Update: Wagner, Putz, Beltran and Jose

In case you missed it…

Billy Wagner pitched a perfect inning Friday for Single-A St. Lucie, where he will throw again tonight.

the way i understand it, wagner will keep up this pace, then eventually move to pitching back-to-back days… he’ll do that for a bit, after which talk of him joining the Mets will begin… i’m still thinking mid-month

Yesterday, J.J. Putz tossed 25 pitches in a bullpen session in Citi Field, where he will throw again Wednesday.

He told reporters he hopes to be back in three weeks, though he’ll know more following his session on Wednesday.

i suspect putz will have the same schedule as wagner, basically… so, wherever billy is, j.j. will be a week or so behind

Carlos Beltran took live batting practice on the field Saturday, and hit from both sides of the plate in a 20-minute session.

from what i can gather, Jose Reyes will do light running today in St. Lucie, but he is taking it slow… as is John Maine, who is still idle, resting, and waiting out discomfort in his shoulder

Who cares. Put a fork in us. We are done.

Chiefman August 3, 2009 at 9:04 am

I’d really love to fight you on that, but truth is you are 100% correct. The Mets are dead men walking.

Lorenzo23 August 3, 2009 at 9:27 am

Maybe now we could start the “Fire Omar” chants and “we want Bobby V” chants and maybe…”Sell the Team your terrible owners” chants?????

Xavier22 August 3, 2009 at 10:01 am

Hey-hey!
Ho-Ho!
Fred and Jeff have got to go!

jay15 August 3, 2009 at 9:30 am

What exactly is the point of Beltran coming back

wlaadair August 3, 2009 at 9:37 am

He’s getting paid to play, if his knee can hold up he should be out there, end of story.

MetsLv31 August 3, 2009 at 10:21 am

End of story in ridiculously short-sighted world. We’ve had this debate before…he is also paid to play NEXT season (and 2011 I believe). What’s the point in rushing him back to try to salvage a season that is on the brink of being entirely over, just to then have him sidelined next year and possibly beyond if he needs microfracture surgery on his knee?

wlaadair August 3, 2009 at 10:40 am

Who said anything about rushing him back? I didn’t, there are two months remaining of the season, not a rush in there at all.

Chances are he will need the microfracture surgery anyway, so there’s never a guarantee about 2010 and 2011 .

Who knows what the next two seasons will bring for him and anyone else?

MetsLv31 August 3, 2009 at 11:25 am

Him coming back at all this year, with little improvement in his knee, is rushing back. Realistically, this season is just about done. He should just sit the rest out and get himself ready for next year. If playing hurt will increase the chance he needs surgery, then it’s not the right call.

wlaadair August 3, 2009 at 11:30 am

Agreed, if there is little to no improvement but of what I have heard, there is a great deal of progress.

I’m not trying to butt heads with anyone, just get into a discussion, every one is entitled to their opinion.

These guaranteed contracts are completely ridiculous, i understand that they are there because these guys have earned them, especially Beltran, but i can’t stand the fact of being shut down because people are giving up.

I agree that if playing all but seals his fate for possibly career ending surgery its not worth it, but again, no guarantees either way.

MetsLv31 August 3, 2009 at 11:41 am

I haven’t heard about “a great deal of progress.” This is from a post 4 or so days ago.

“According to Beltran, though his recent MRI indicated the bone bruise in his knee has not improved, he has been hitting with the brace for more than a week… ”

Here is an article from Baseball Prospectus, with some pieces pulled out. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=9316

“Beltran has decided to accelerate the pace of his rehab, hoping to come back towards mid-August…Beltran made the informed decision based on the near certainty that he will need microfracture surgery and could miss much, if not all, of the 2010 season. He’ll do everything he can to avoid it, but that’s the worst case scenario and he’s willing to give it a go…It’s a calculated risk that Beltran and the Mets are taking.”

This seems like a stupid risk to be taking, for a nearly dead season. What exactly is the upside to this gamble? Even if we do make the WC, who thinks we’re going to go all the way?

Nate W. August 3, 2009 at 11:47 am

I’d put it more like this…

If playing this year has more than a 10% chance of ending forcing him to miss time next year then he shouldn’t come back.

It’s sounding like a high risk, low reward situation. If they had managed to not give away games earlier in the year or if Omar had made another move or two and they were actually in it then its debatable. But they aren’t even in it, so to risk next year is just awful awful chance taking.

wlaadair August 3, 2009 at 11:59 am

Agreed, it is a big risk, and we dont’ want Beltran to be permanently shut down because he played when he shouldn’t have, that’s been debated ad nauseum, but as professional athletes, these things are a part of the game.

They all play hurt and they all take chances, but who doesn’t? Every time you get in your car, you are taking the risk of being in an accident, etc.

MetsLv31 August 3, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Sure, there is always risk whenever you play a sport, or even step outside your door. But the point is to minimize risk and maximize reward. Him coming back this season does neither.

wlaadair August 3, 2009 at 12:51 pm

Can’t say i disagree on it being a huge risk with low to no reward but he played for Puerto Rico for Team USA just fine and now the whole team is suffering the consequences of him doing more than he should have earlier in the year.

Stem Ad August 3, 2009 at 9:41 am

Beltran, not much. I am mostly interested in Putz and Delgado to see if they can be valued for next season. I was very cautious going into this season with Delgado because of his hip problem, but now that he has had surgery and will have a long time to rest after playing for just a bit of time, he should be stable for an entire season at first base. Besides, I REALLY want to see him hit HR #500 in a Mets jersey!!!!

ChuckC August 3, 2009 at 9:31 am

I don’t blame the owners. They spend lots of $$, got us a new park and want to win.

I blame the injuries, the GM and the manager. Both of those clowns have to go.

Patrick August 3, 2009 at 9:38 am

What could you possibly expect of Manuel with 43% of your offensive production missing?

Nate W. August 3, 2009 at 9:41 am

Maximizing the players that he has to work with. He failed miserably at that.

Stem Ad August 3, 2009 at 9:44 am

You can expect him to keep the team somewhat respectable with an outside shot at playoffs and the possbility of making things at least a little interesting in the final month or two…

…Oh wait!

I have a very good feeling about seeing Manuel coach a healthy and [hopefully] retooled team next season. If Omar gets fired and someone comes in and actually addresses problems and problems-to-be correctly, I am sure Manuel will do more then fine.

Nate W. August 3, 2009 at 10:19 am

yes indeed, with a foolproof roster Manuel will be a solid manager.

MetsLv31 August 3, 2009 at 10:26 am

I’m not sure if “foolproof” is enough of a safeguard against Manuel’s gut…

Stem Ad August 3, 2009 at 10:29 am

Yes, and Torre had nothing to do with a single championship they won, simply because they had a foolproof roster.

The bottom line is Manuel fits in NY well, he handles the press well and his attituide fits far better with the media then Willie did. Can someone else do better? Yes, but you cannot entirely fault a manager who is forced the start Corey Sullivan and use Angel Beroa as a pinch hitter (Though Hernandez should have just stayed in the game, because I honestly believe he is a better hitter then Beroa, so chalk one up against Manuel)

Nate W. August 3, 2009 at 11:35 am

First of all, putting Torre and Manuel in the same conversation is uncalled for and its completely illogical to make the leap that since Torre was good and had a foolproof roster makes Manuel good somehow. One situation has nothing to do with the other.

Second, Torre’s biggest trait in the early years he was there was his ability to shelter the players from an overbearing owner. That situation doesn’t exist here at all. That kind of player and press friendly manager isn’t what is called for. Someone who can do the things Jerry does, while not being a dunce at in game management shouldn’t be that hard to find.

Bringing Torre into this debate, wow… just wow. Any more silly ideas?

Nate W. August 3, 2009 at 11:40 am

“Can someone else do better? Yes”

This says it all really.

And I’m not concerned with what he has done in the past, though the game threads here are filled with first guessing Jerry’s illogical moves. There are numerous times Jerry pulled a dump move not because of roster limitations but simply because he is a terrible in game manager.

I’m concerned if he will be the right man to manage the team they put together next year. And there is almost a zero change he is the best candidate.
Tony LaRussa is a free agent, but no lets just keep Manuel because he does a couple things well.

Xavier22 August 3, 2009 at 10:08 am

I can blame the owners.

- Fred hired his half-wit son Jeff as COO, who is clearly unqualified to hold such a position by any objective measurement.
- Fred and Jeff were responsible for hiring Omar & Co.
- Jeff allowed Tony Bernazard to muddle the chain of command, ultimately leading to the mess we experienced last week.
- They continue to keep Jay Horowitz on as the head of PR, when he is clearly way in over his head in this 21st century world the rest of us live in.
- Now that he has complete ownership of the Mets, Fred seems determined to pretend they are the Brooklyn Dodgers
- Fred’s mismanagement of his family finances has had a direct impact upon their ownership of the Mets.

Nate W. August 3, 2009 at 9:39 am

So we have some contract and trade auditions to look forward to. I guess.

Agee's Catch August 3, 2009 at 9:44 am

I still don’t know “what this close to being fired” means. If Omar was that close, who pulled him back?

dave27 August 3, 2009 at 10:02 am

Wagner, Putz, Beltran, Reyes.

Too late, too late, too late, too late.

Hit The Weights Zeile August 3, 2009 at 10:55 am

Are they serious. SHUT THEM DOWN! If putz delgado and wagner want to come back fine theyre free agents. Beltran and Reyes need to be shut down. Reyes got hurt in May and hes doing LIGHT running in St. Lucie in August. Come on shut these two guys down and get them good for 2010. After this disaster season this team can not afford to be hindered at all next year they need to come out swinging with all their pieces (including new pieces).

wlaadair August 3, 2009 at 11:14 am

So the next time that David Wright limps or Alex Cora grimaces with his bad thumb, shut them down, is that what we’re saying?

ravi3 August 3, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Aka there hasn’t been any meaningful progress whatsoever. Can’t they just admit that these guys won’t be back this year and end this nonsense?

wlaadair August 3, 2009 at 12:52 pm

they won’t do that because Minaya didn’t make any moves based on them coming back and as long as they are out with small progress noted Jerry has the excuse of not playing the team that will win games.

Nate W. August 3, 2009 at 2:37 pm

Wagner pitched this afternoon for the GCL Mets. The St. Lucie Mets are off today, so pitching for them tonight would be kind of impossible. He had 1-2-3 inning with no K’s.

MetsLv31 August 3, 2009 at 11:27 am

Agreed. No one cared about Willie’s press conferences in 2006. I’d rather have a manager that gets the most out of his team
