News: Jon Niese to have Surgery on Hamstring

by Matthew Cerrone

Jon Niese has a complete tear of the right upper hamstring tendon from the bone.

…hello, wow… that has got to hurt

He has been admitted to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and will undergo surgery.

Niese will miss the rest of the season and is expected to be ready for Spring Training in 2010.

that stinks… not just for the Mets, but for niese… a) the Mets now have no idea how to factor him in to their off-season and next-season plans… and b) for a young kid, who was seemingly just ready to turn the corner, this is a huge set back… good luck, jon

I feel for the kid, this was the perfect opportunity for him to showcase what he can do.

Rest up, work hard, you’ll get your chance.

This is someone I want to make his way back and be successful. When the rosters expand, I hope the Mets don’t waste their time bringing in old players. Bring up guys like Ike Davis and let him get a whiff of the majors.

I agree with the sentiment, but remember guys like Davis, Holt, Tejada, etc. are not on the 40-man roster. Adding them in September not only requires cutting others, but it starts their clocks when it comes to arbitration, etc.

So we cut Argenis Reyes and Berroa. Is it really a loss?

Patrick August 5, 2009 at 8:19 pm

I don’t want to be a wet blanket, particularly because I like Niese, but the chances of him having an effective recovering to a serious injury and surgery on his plant leg is not exactly something I would take strong odds on.

Dr. Blogstein August 5, 2009 at 8:33 pm

More wet blanket here: Mets lose a chip to trade in the off season too.

dave27 August 5, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Are you a doctor? If they say he should be ready for Spring Training, he should be ready for Spring Training. Hamstrings tear, hamstrings heal.

Lorenzo23 August 5, 2009 at 9:46 pm

yea seriously we all know you work in the Mets front office but your a doctor also??? Thats amazing..

Anyway I agree with David the kid is only 21-22 years old and he is having surgery to fix his torn hamstring… he will be fine in spring training… Not worried just upset he is missing out on some Major League experience – it looked like he finally was coming around

methead August 6, 2009 at 12:00 am

lorenzo…lets be serious here. His biggest value to this team was his trade value. Now thats gone. That leave us with 1 chip who is ready now as trade bait.

methead August 6, 2009 at 12:32 am

Oh yeah…and not to mention that niese wasnt going to bring us back a prized player either.

derxmasta August 5, 2009 at 8:42 pm

is this the same injury as the one jose reyes has?

ericloz August 5, 2009 at 8:46 pm

No, Reyes had a strain and minor tear behind his knee. same tendon group different injury and location.

derxmasta August 5, 2009 at 8:55 pm

i thought it was hamstring then tear in tendon.
but im surprised how quickly they acted on niese.
but alas they still dindt put him on the DL and bring somebody up.
so again we are short handed

I would bet they already have some pitcher on the way to San Diego to take his spot. They normally don’t make roster movies until just before game time for whatever reasons.

Nate W. August 5, 2009 at 9:24 pm

it looks like Niese’s tore tendon is at the top of the hamstring, while Reyes injured one at the bottom.

metsfan1 August 5, 2009 at 9:12 pm

It just amazes me what has happened to this team. I really feel for this kid. That is a major injury and to think that he will be ready by January I think is a bit optimistic.

It was good to see they won but who the hell now takes Niese’s spot? I guess Redding.

Nate W. August 5, 2009 at 9:21 pm

As sad as it is to have yet another injury, at least its a clear cut injury that they can’t mess with and make worse.

They can’t call it a ‘cramp’ or a ‘mild strain’ and try to force him back.

And this situation will force the Mets to look at him as potential depth in pitching. He can’t be counted on in the plans for next season, but if he can get back to where he was yesterday it’ll be a big plus.

Can Omar actually operate this way?

methead August 6, 2009 at 12:06 am

No Omar can’t. No general manager can. And now going into the off-season he has no real trade bait unless he unloads 2 or 3 Class A/AA prospects on someone willing to do it for a premier player.

I could care less if niese is in our rotation next year. I think he is at best a #3/4 starter. What I care about is we cant trade him now. LOL.

MainStMets23 August 5, 2009 at 10:27 pm

every games brings a new injury this week, whos next?

Super King August 5, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Poor Niese, so much promise, and actually gave us something worth watching every 5 days

2009_believe August 5, 2009 at 10:35 pm

is anybody else wondering how a perfectly good hamstring could just tear? It seems that your hamstring should be able to withstand that type of split he made, maybe it can’t i don’t know but it seems like such a freak injury to me

MetFanForLife August 5, 2009 at 10:53 pm

This was a terrible break for a nice kid; however, it just reinforces the tenuous rope your “Untradable Prospects” walk. Look at all the players we could have had for Milledge over the years and now our top 2 guys, FMart and Niese, are untradeable due to injuries. I think someone in the Mets front office should be looking into the real math behind minor league talent. They have DWright, Reyes, Pelfrey, Parnell, Pagan, and Murphy from their farm system. Most teams have no more than that. Trying to hold on to too many “prospects” with a death grip ensures you’ll have many that never pan out. Now we’re stuck with our “prospects”.

methead August 6, 2009 at 12:12 am

You do have a point, for the most part. The problem is, the little we had over the years we have traded to get people like Santana, Putz and Delgado all great trades. Now we are depleted waiting for the next generation which is at least a year away (2011). Do you trade all those guys away to get a Carlos Lee type player? how about a 30 year old Victor Martinez (not sure what they really wanted). Its a difficult spot for Omar and I wouldnt want to be in it.

think about this, if he trades the farm to get a top flight LF and #2 starter then either one of them flops or one of our core gets hurt, or Beltran ends up having to retire because of his knees..then he will have an inflated payroll, no prospects, a bad team and a losing record.

Wow. Good luck Omar. hahahahaha

thedude August 5, 2009 at 11:06 pm

This is really too bad. I could live with just about anyone else going down, but this was the perfect time to see what guys like Niese and F-Mart had.

That’s the worst thing about having no major-league ready prospects. If those guys were another year along, we could spend these last two months getting a look at Davis, Holt, etc.

There’s nothing worse than watching meaningless games starring Alex Cora, Angel Berroa and Gary Sheffield.

fortleemets August 5, 2009 at 11:35 pm

So another injury likely due to improper training and physical maintenance. Why is Ray Ramirez still on the team?

Elastic August 6, 2009 at 9:11 am

They should have never let Niese take that warm-up pitch. I hope he heals well. Niese was one of the few pleasant surprises this year.
