News: Mets re-acquire Anderson Hernandez

by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets have traded minor-league infielder Greg Veloz to the Nationals for infielder Anderson Hernandez.

Hernandez is expected to join the Mets tomorrow in San Diego.

…i’m going to assume this means bad news for Luis Castillo, who twisted his ankle falling down the dugout steps the other day

Hernandez, 26, hit .251 with 12 extra base hits and 23 RBI in 77 games with the Nationals.

anderson has already been on the disabled list this season, so at least he got it out of the way

The 21–year-old Veloz had been hitting .232 with 18 stolen bases in 91 games in Single-A.

i guess berroa is out

jesse52782 August 6, 2009 at 11:25 am

guess Castillo is going tot he DL

wright5murph28 August 6, 2009 at 11:27 am

oh thats true, i forgot about that possibility

ExileInLA August 6, 2009 at 11:32 am

Possibility? How about “eventual certainty”?

If he takes Niese’s roster spot, I guess this means that Dessens won’t be activated until they get around to putting Castillo on the DL — after a week or so of “day to day” stuff. In the meantime, with Parnell & Figueroa sharing a rotation spot, they’re going with a short bullpen.

Razor Shines August 6, 2009 at 11:26 am

guess we are buyers

methead August 7, 2009 at 12:13 am

sorry a little late here but that was funny.

Stem Ad August 6, 2009 at 11:31 am

…anderson has already been on the disabled list this season, so at least he got it out of the way…

Are you confident to say that? Its almost a lock that he gets caught in the bagage claim carosel while flying in to meet the team, spraining his wrist…

dykstraw August 6, 2009 at 11:35 am

HEEEEERE COMES THE CAVALRY

stilltheEWM August 6, 2009 at 11:36 am

Do you think Anderson is upset to being traded to a last place team.. wait waht?

Hit The Weights Zeile August 6, 2009 at 11:37 am

The season is over I get it, but is Omar at all familiar with players outside of the Mets/Expos organization? I’m sure someone will burn me and say i complain about everything. Im not complaining I find it hilarious that when in doubt omar just acquires former mets/expos.

stilltheEWM August 6, 2009 at 11:40 am

As far as the Nats are concerned, the Mets are their farm system.. Milledge, Flores… there is no end to the talent we give the Nats for absolutely zero in return.

We’re paying Brian Schneider their 5 million dollar contract so he can bat .200!!

I’m with ya Zeile.

kd bart August 6, 2009 at 11:46 am

The Nats thought so highly of Milledge they sent him to Pittsburgh. We also received Church for Milledge who turned into Francouer. At this point, I can safely say we came out ahead on that trade.

stilltheEWM August 6, 2009 at 11:52 am

Really? We came ahead? instead of having years of control of a young player who’s going to get better playing everday, we get to pay another 3 million to Francouer ( on top of the 10 million we have no paid Scheider) so he can hit meaningless HRs in a lost season?

How did we come ahead again? 13 million bucks could of signed us quitte a bit this off season, and we could of kept Milledge.

Hit The Weights Zeile August 6, 2009 at 11:59 am

I think milledge for franceour is a fine trade but having to pay schneider does bring it down since that 5 million dollars couldve easily gotten orlando hudson. Luckily Schneider is gone after this year along with a lot of other crappy deadweight contracts. I do not like Omar but one thing he has proven he can do is sign free agents and there are guys out there to be signed this year that fill needs.

kd bart August 6, 2009 at 12:05 pm

There are actually people who still buy into the hype regarding Lastings Milledge?

letsgometsgo1986 August 6, 2009 at 12:07 pm

I certainly hope we do NOT just start signing players. We lose our draft pick when we do that and we will have a pretty high pick this year. People complain about our farm system, yet just want to keep giving up draft picks and spending a ton of dough. We are not just a player or two away with all of our injuries. Let’s build a franchise…

wnymetsfan August 6, 2009 at 12:18 pm

There is a strong possibility we finish in the bottom 15 teams this year so our pick would be protected no matter who we sign

Hit The Weights Zeile August 6, 2009 at 12:20 pm

you are aware that you cant lose a draft pick if you are in the top 15 right? Trust me we will be in the top 15. Better more the reason to sign guys, we wont lose picks and get good major leaguers then build the farm system in the draft, in fact we may get lucky and get a comp pick for someone that leaves. This is a perfect offseason to rebuild everything, are the Wilpons/Omar up the challenge? that remains to be seen.

Hit The Weights Zeile August 6, 2009 at 12:21 pm

as for your last comment, when healthy YES we are a player or two away (john lackey and matt holliday) there you go, you add those two guys to the team next year along with a 100% healthy reyes and beltran possibly putz but i doubt they pick up his option and now we are a contender again.

methead August 7, 2009 at 12:16 am

Hey Zeile..little late but I am assuming you think Delgado will back at full strengh and sign with the mets. If not, then your theory is wrong. We would need to sign 2 bats as 1 Holliday does not replace 1 Delgado. Actually, its a step down.

Hit The Weights Zeile August 6, 2009 at 11:53 am

Lets just hope Thole keeps it up in the minors and maybe after 1 more year down there is ready to come up. That will hopefully make us forget about Flores which was one of Omars BIG blunders that always seems to go under the radar mainly bc it wasnt something he DID it was something he DID NOT do.

jamie_ August 6, 2009 at 11:46 am

well, at least we know what to expect and what not to from him. I guess that’s…something…

pedros rooster August 6, 2009 at 12:17 pm

kd bart, I actually still buy into the hype of Lastings Milledge, actually. He has a great minor-league resume, where he was always young for his league. He performed capably in 2006, and his 2007 line of .272/.341/.446 (for a 22-year-old) is pretty darn good, considering he saw spot-start action (I believe).

I think he’s extremely talented, but seemed emotionally immature when he was up here. I think his propensity for drama/team distraction is what ticketed him out of here (and out of Washington). I think that his demotion to AAA this year (and re-promotion with the Pirates) will grow him up, and I think he’ll become a very good OF in coming years. Joining the Pirates and playing every day is a redemption I feel he’ll take advantage of. And remember, he’s only 24.

Hit The Weights Zeile August 6, 2009 at 12:22 pm

he has talent he may be one of those guys who bounces around and finally figures it all out relatively late in his career ala carlos pena.

thedude August 6, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Count me as another still on the Lastings train.

And the fact they gave him up for nothing when he was cheap and controllable was bad enough. Just because he’s floundered with the two worst organizations in baseball the PIrates and Nats, doesnt mean the same would have happened with Mets.

And if the Nats get rid of someone, I’d take that as a badge of honor

Andrew August 6, 2009 at 12:19 pm

Are you kidding? We got Anderson Hernandez back? Jesus. This is even worse than I thought.

Veloz is nothing special though. Future utility guy.

Hit The Weights Zeile August 6, 2009 at 12:23 pm

future utility guy for present sub par 2nd basemen, sounds like a great trade lol

thedude August 6, 2009 at 1:28 pm

This is the kind of post-deadline deal Omar was talking about!

Great players are still available!

Nate W. August 6, 2009 at 3:03 pm

1. It keeps Berroa off the field
2. It keeps A. Reyes off the roster
3. They gave up minor league dead weight

I really don’t see what there is to complain about with this trade. It cost them nothing and they will get slightly more than nothing in return, and then A. Hernandez will be cut in the winter. Really pointless to complain about this move…

dave27 August 6, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Well I think this deal is the exclamation point on Omar’s 2009 season. It was a joke to rely on this guy 4 years ago and its a bigger joke to bring him back. He is not worth the paperwork.

Anyone catch Pedro striking out 9 of his first 12 in AA? Awesome. Another feather for Omar.

pedros rooster August 6, 2009 at 12:37 pm

I’m sure that was very exciting for the Reading Phillies fans, but he also gave up 3 runs in 6 innings. To a double-A team.

I think when he has to face a lineup of major-league hitters who can adjust to his changeup, he’ll be back to his usual 3-5 inning performances.

Not sure the Phillies have room for him. Who do they bump from the rotation. Local hero Jamie Moyer? I’d be very surprised if that happened. Right now, he’s a quaint little sideshow that may never make it to a major-league town.

dave27 August 6, 2009 at 12:42 pm

No you’re right. I’d much rather go to battle with Nelson Figueroa and Tim Redding.

That’s the funniest part – the Phillies don’t even have room for him, and we’re on our 9th starter.

pedros rooster August 6, 2009 at 1:08 pm

I understand your frustration. But the choice to sign/not sign Pedro is really immaterial, isn’t it? Even if he were in our rotation now, we’d still be in 4th place.

Dave, I tend to notice the folks on this board and their comments. When I first joined, you were highly spirited, and any criticism you had for the team was infrequent but 100% spot on. It was insightful and helpful, and you provided excellent analysis. But in the past week or two, it seems that you’re regularly handing out beatdowns for a lot of different things.

By all means, proceed as you see fit. But I do enjoy your posts that break down problems, offer solutions, and look ahead to brighter days.

Peter August 6, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Free Malo!!!!!

He played well in Spring Training, why trade for what we know A-Hern is?

Sing it with me now . . .

All I am saying, is give the kids a chance!

Nate W. August 6, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Malo?

Malo?

really?

please…

FlushingLumberCo86 August 6, 2009 at 12:49 pm

We had Anderson before. He was absolutely phenomenal on defense. Couldn’t hit. But his average is up. I’m curious to see if he can get it going.

nyj0126 August 6, 2009 at 2:24 pm

It’d only be ironic to see Hernandez revert back to his crappy playing with the Mets. I see it coming already.

Nate W. August 6, 2009 at 5:25 pm

…revert back?

His ops is lower than Luis Castillo’s was last year and this is AH’s peak?

nyj0126 August 6, 2009 at 2:27 pm

But than again…. Remember Endy Chavez coming back to the Mets after how many stitns with the Expos/Nats? This could be a nice move for the Mets.

MaxinMD August 6, 2009 at 3:50 pm

Why not move Daniel Murphy to second? Give him a workout and see how it goes?
