Note: First Opposite-Field HR in Citi by Mets

by Matthew Cerrone on August 6th, 2009 at 8:57 am

David Wright hit his eighth home run of the season yesterday.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, courtesy of ESPN.com, it was the team’s first opposite-field home run at Citi Field this season.

Later in the game, in the sixth inning, Cardinals RHP Brad Thompson knocked Wright back in the batter’s box with a high-and-tight fastball that nearly clipped his helmet.

it stands to reason the pitch was in retaliation to Nelson Figueroa hitting Albert Pujols earlier in the game

“It’s part of the game, but, you know, you do it the right way,” Wright told reporters following the game.

right… i love good old hard ball… own the plate, pitchers… i have no problem with that… like figgy was doing, you’ve got to pitch inside, deep inside, to push hitters off the plate, especially a guy like pujols… if you hit him, oh well… he gets first… then, if the opposition pitcher feels the need to defend his hitters, and he also throws inside, and hits someone, so be it… but, no throwing at heads… that’s just wrong… and dangerous… own the plate, fine, but don’t kill a guy

Later, Jeff Francoeur called Thompson’s pitch ‘bush league.’

“Hit him in the back and we’ve got no problem,” he added.  “When you start throwing at someone’s head, you’re throwing at their livelihood.”

Buzz: Bobby Parnell Back in the Rotation

by Matthew Cerrone on August 6th, 2009 at 8:40 am

the buzz from Citi Field yesterday suggested Bobby Parnell could get Monday’s start against the D-Backs, in place of Jon Niese, who will have season-ending surgery on his hamstring

i never thought the Mets would move him back to the rotation, because of the success he has had in the bullpen… however, maybe they learned their lesson with Aaron Heilman… who knows… the thing with parnell, though, like so many young pitchers, is whether he can command his secondary pitches, specifically the split-finger fastball he’s been working on since spring training… nevertheless, at this point, he most certainly should get a chance for a few starts… at worst, he’s a bust, and they know he has value still in the bullpen… however, what if he’s a success

Meanwhile, according to Adam Rubin in the Daily News, Elmer Dessens is expected to replace Niese on the roster.
