by Matthew Cerrone on August 8th, 2009 at 8:01 am

Update, 8:01 am:

Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes the White Sox are likely the team who claimed Blue Jays OF Alex Rios.

Update, 5:37 pm:

Joel Sherman of the New York Post says a high ranking team official assured him the Mets did not claim Rios.

Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus writes, “Lots of speculation that it was the White Sox that claimed Rios. I have no idea.”

Original Post:

Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes a team put in a waiver claim on Blue Jays OF Alex Rios, who is batting .261 with 39 extra base hits, 19 stolen bases and 58 RBI in 105 games this season.

The Blue Jays can either let Rios go to the team who claimed him, for nothing, along with his five-year, $60 million contract; or, they can pull him back and keep him, meaning he will not be traded this season; or they can work out a trade.

most interesting here is, from what i understand, the commisioner’s office will dish out a $250,000 fine to an executive who leaks information about players on waivers… so, wow… someone really wanted olney to report this… i wonder why…

…lastly, last month, i talked a lot about rios, who is 27 years old… he kind of reminds me of a young Carlos Beltran, from his days in KC… he’s athletic, and full of potential, and could be a good fit for the Mets going forwardhowever, he’ll either grow in to that contract and make it a bargain, or it will hurt down the line

Olney speculates the Mets or Giants could be the team who put in the claim.

Last month, in a poll on MetsBlog.com, 62 percent of people who voted said they would sign Rios to a five-year, $60 million deal if he was a free agent.
