Billy Wagner pitched a scoreless, 1–2–3 inning tonight with two strike outs for the Gulf Coast Mets in Florida.
Mets assistant GM John Ricco told reporters today in Arizona that Wagner will again pitch Friday, though there is no specific timetable for his return.
…from what i can gather, if all goes well friday, much like the Daily News said this morning, wagner will join the team in New York saturday night, and likely be activated on sunday…
Speaking of injured pitchers…
Mets 19–year-old RHP Jenrry Mejia made his return from the disabled list tonight, allowing three runs and two hits in three innings for Double-A Binghamton.
The Mets defeated the Diamondbacks by the score of 6-4 today at Chase Field.

The Least You Should Know:
It was Vintage Perez once again today, as he pitched five innings, allowed just a run but six hits and six walks.
He did strike out seven and stranded 11 Diamondbacks on the bases during his outing, somehow surviving to at least be in position to win.
Trent Oeltjen made a spectacular diving catch in the first inning off of Jeff Francoeur to save two Met runs.
Fernando Tatis had three hits including a big RBI single which actually resulted in two runs in the sixth inning, thanks to him getting caught in a rundown which allowed Francoeur to score the third Met run.
The Mets seemed to have dodged major damage after Pedro Feliciano induced a fielders choice comebacker by Stephen Drew in the seventh inning, but then Josh Whitesell, hitting .188 on the year, hit one past Tatis to score Gerardo Parra, and pinch hitter Miguel Montero tied the game on a single to score Drew.
But the Mets bounced right back in the eighth inning when Luis Castillo, off the bench, came up big to score Tatis on an RBI single in the eighth inning, and with his second triple of the game, Cory Sullivan plated Castillo.
Francisco Rodriguez earned his 25th save of the year despite walking on thin ice and showing reduced velocity once again.
Other Observations and Notes:
I spent much of this game searching for words to describe Perez’s outing, words that I haven’t used this year, but while he only allowed one run, he was just awful, and I know I have said that this year.
I feel that this club played with so much indifference throughout the bulk of this road trip, but while it wasn’t pretty today, the team seemed to have shown some spunk despite another aggravating start from Perez.
In a season full of disappointments, Cory Sullivan has been a pleasant surprise and at the very least, deserves to be in there until he doesn’t produce.
Feliciano seemingly can no longer get left handed hitters out.
It’s rare to see a player reach base on a strikeout and passed ball, and then come around to score thanks to two more wild pitches as was the case with David Wright in the sixth inning today.
Wright scored again on another wild pitch in the ninth inning.
The Mets open a three game series at Citi Field on Friday against the Giants, with Bobby Parnell facing Barry Zito.
Carlos Delgado will return to New York after injuring his oblique muscle while rehabilitating in Port St. Lucie.
…just when i thought i had heard it all with these injuries… i can’t understand how a player can get injured while already being out due to injury…

Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano were claimed on waivers, but pulled back by the Mets.
In other words, now, neither player can be traded this season.
Original Post, 2:42 pm:
Jon Heyman of SI.com believes two teams were interested in acquiring Gary Sheffield from the Mets before his recent hamstring issue emerged.
Heyman is not yet sure if Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano were cleared waivers.
…SNY’s Ted Berg and i were talking before about whether the Rockies would be a good fit, in that they are rumored to be seeking a power bat for the bench and a left-handed specialist, i.e., sheffield and feliciano or Billy Wagner…
Heyman also reports on Matt Holliday’s off-season demands; the market for free-agent-to-be Jason Bay; and the future of John Smoltz; among other topics and rumors from around MLB.
Tagged Pedro Feliciano |The Mets will wear throwback uniforms this weekend when they play the Giants at Citi Field.
In addition, Adam Rubin, in a post to his blog for the Daily News, says that there are changes being made at Citi Field, including the installation of championship banners along the left field wall.
For more on the jerseys and these changes, check out Rubin’s blog.
The Mets are likely to end up spending $1.78 million per win, according to a blog post from Dave Cameron of the Wall Street Journal.
Meanwhile, in a post to his blog for the Star-Ledger, Brian Costa asks, “Is this the worst starting lineup in Mets history?”
…maybe… it was rough… but, remember 2004… with Richard Hidalgo, Shane Spencer, Gerald Williams and Joe McEwing… or, some of those early 90s, and late 70s teams… either way, last night was up there…

The Mets conclude their three game series against the Diamondbacks today at 3:40 pm at Chase Field.
Cory Sullivan will leadoff, followed by Alex Cora at second, David Wright, Gary Sheffield in left, Jeff Francoeur, Fernando Tatis, Omir Santos behind the plate and Anderson Hernandez at shortstop.
Oliver Perez (2-3, 6.38 ERA) will start for the Mets. Perez had perhaps his most promising outing in San Diego during his last start, pitching into the seventh inning and allowing just a run on two hits, and just two walks.
Jon Garland (6-10, 4.33 ERA) will start for the Diamondbacks. After going nine innings in his start at Citi Field on August 2, Garland was hit hard by the Nationals in his last start, allowing four runs and eight hits in just six innings.
The Brewers designated OF-3B Bill Hall for assignment, according to MLB.com.
The 29–year-old Hall will earn $8.4 million in 2010, after which he will likely be made a free agent, despite having a $9 million team option for 2011.
…my friend, who is a Brewers fan, says hall is just one of those players with a ton of talent, which he flashes from time to time, from speed to power to strong defense at third, yet he could only really put it together for that one season and a half…
Hall hit 35 HR and .270 in 2006, after which he signed a four-year, $24 million deal with the Brewers.
However, since, he’s batting .232, including .201 with just 18 extra base hits in 76 games this season.
Pedro Martinez is scheduled to start for the Phillies tonight in Chicago.
…i am not sure, but i think that may put him on schedule to face the Mets, when the Phillies come to Citi Field the following weekend…

Adam Rubin of the Daily News believes the Mets will sign their top draft-pick Steven Matz, a lefthander from Ward Melville High School on Long Island, by Monday’s deadline.
To see a scouting video of Matz, click here.
Rubin details the amount of money Matz will sign for, which is double what players drafted around him will get.
…from what i can gather, he’s likely to advance pretty quickly next season, though he’s still a ways off from seeing the big leagues… he’s a big kid, strong, with a decent fastball, but he’s not afraid to pitch inside… he has a decent curve ball and an advanced change-up… in a perfect world, he grows up to look like Barry Zito, minus the ridiculous contract and surfing…
