Health: David Wright says his Knee is Fine

By Matthew Cerrone on Aug 13, 2009, 9:13 am

David Wright injured his knee yesterday in the ninth inning while running the bases, but stayed in the game.

Jerry Manuel described the injury as a strain behind the right knee, though Wright said it was just general soreness that will not keep him out of the lineup on Friday.

That said, Manuel said he expects Wright to be examined by doctors in New York before Friday’s game.

Wright dismissed the idea that he needs to be examined, telling MLB.com:

“There’s nothing wrong… They’re always too cautious with all of us… I’m just a little banged up.  I’ll be in there.  I’m good to go.”

too cautious… really… from what i can gather, communication between the team’s trainers and players may be the biggest culprit in how injuries are handled on this club… it’s not the actual trainers, not the training regimen, not the doctors, who are tops in their industry, etc., it’s the way pain and possible injuries, etc., are relayed to the trainers by players, who may be given too much slack in how their injuries are treated

People will argue it is the training regimen, but I agree with you Matt, theres something else to it. The training regimen was obviously good enough to keep the “Core” healthy for 4 years. all the major injuries the past few years are from, what VCarver calls it, AARP players.

Communication is a possibility, but I also think team management does what they want regardless of doctor recommendations.

I said this in the other thread…pain behind the knee, I feel like I’ve heard that before.

Beltran has a bruise behind his knee, but a strain behind the knee is weird, but with speedsters, their legs are so valuable and Wright is our stolen base leader.

Is Omar still thinking they are a couple of calvary members (seemingly down to Wagner at this point) away from a miracle run at the playoffs?

If not, give the guy a few days off before he does something more serious too.

Heck, put him on the 15 day just to make sure!

And Matt, it is a bit snide to blame the trainers if the players are too macho to say when they are in pain, or to be honest about it. And I expect this happens on all teams.

Unless the medical people are supposed to be mind readers? If the guy can walk and says he feels OK, what are they supposed to do? Put him on the DL anyway?

I read it differently. Seems to me Matt said the trainers and doctors are NOT at fault, but rather the players who “may be given too much slack” in how their injuries are treated.

Who is responsible for giving them slack? Who should be enforcing rest and DL stints more vigorously? Is it really the trainers? Or is it Omar/Jerry?

I really don’t know, but tend to think it’s Omar and Jerry who are giving the players too much rope or pushing them to play when they shouldn’t be. Didn’t we hear Jerry keep saying this summer that it was OK for Reyes to play at 80%? If that’s his philosophy for someone with a leg injury and who relies on his legs so much, then he’s part of the problem. I’m just guessing as none of us really know what goes on behind the scenes.

They should send him for an MRI, Ray Ramirez should escort him and let the doctors decide if its an injury or just “banged up”.

I’m sure he’ll be fine, i think the whole stomach flu thing and the concern there got him spooked, he clams up when it comes to his own pain and discomfort.

didn’t Beltran and Maine start off with the stomach flu?

Yes they had it in early June, something very strange is going on, even with this stomach thing, vomiting episodes sound more like food poisoning than stomach flu.

Maybe there is a lack of communication because we fans call these guys soft. Therefore, they play through injuries only to get injured more. I say shut Wright down for a little. No point in getting him hurt.

    METS TO LOWER PRICES.

I have not seen Matt speak of this (perhaps I missed it), but supposedly Mets are lowing prices by 50% to premium seats for all remaining games.

Wonder if people who already purchased tickets to those games will get anything back.

If not, sort of terrible because most season ticket holders expect to sell some of there tickets in secondary markets. They do not expect however to have to compete against the Mets selling at basement prices.

it’s actually for members of “theater mania” but anyone can claim the discount with a code – probably exactly so they can weasel out of explaining why they’re not doing anything for previously purchased tickets

this may make them a couple bucks in 2009, but it does not bode well for renewals at all

Shut him down before we find out he needs surgery as well. This season is over, people. We should now start focusing on 2010 and beyond. I’m not saying they should tank on purpose, but let the cards fall wherever they may with the team we have now.

Heck, I wouldn’t mind seeing us fall so far we are in the running for a top five pick in next year’s draft. Based on records only, we’d pick 8th next summer. I don’t know about you guys, but I’d love to be in the running for Strasburg next year…and to really dream, sign Aroldis Chapman as well. This will never happen, but a rotation with those two AND Santana is pretty enticing if they pan out (big if).

Thrown in with Mejia and Holt, that would give us four young power arms to look forward to.

    Okay, I’ll stop dreaming now.

    David Wright timeline:

August 13: Says he is fine just “banged up” a bit.
August 17: After playing all weekend, DW admits his knee still hurts “a little” and is getting an MRI. He is listed as “day to day.”
August 19: DW is put on the DL.
August 24: DW has knee surgery, out for the season.

What’s really scary is your probably not far off, but lets hope it is just a bit banged up, but the strain behind the knee sounds very painful, he has played with groin pain before.
