Update, 8:17 pm:

David Wright has suffered a concussion, and will remained hospitalized overnight at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Original Post:

David Wright was hit in the head by a pitch thrown by Matt Cain in the bottom of the fourth inning during today’s game.

Wright walked off the field under his own power, and Fernando Tatis replaced him as a pinch runner.

…it was a scary sight and I hope he is ok…he was down for about two minutes but it was a great sign to see him walk off the field under his own power…

This is getting ridiculous… Wish they would forfeit the rest of the season.. I’d be willing to eat the cost of my season tickets..

It was only a matter of time before Wright went down… This is scary

Elastic August 15, 2009 at 5:26 pm

Its called a CAT scan and the Mets better do one and Wright SHOULD NOT fly on any high altitude aircraft until he checks out,

We don’t want to do to Wright what we did to Church,

KD August 15, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Amen. There’s no rush to bring him back to try to fight for a season that’s already done with. Play itself? Not only Ryan Church, but Beltran came back too early from his Cameron collision.

With the way injuries have been handled these past two years, Wright has to sit out the week, at most be available to pinch hit. I wouldn’t be upset if they put him on the 15 day DL.

Lorenzo23 August 15, 2009 at 5:29 pm

I wouldn’t be upset if they put him on the 60 day DL.

quitter

Lorenzo23 August 15, 2009 at 5:44 pm

quitter? The last thing we need is another Ryan Church situation. You trust this medical staff???? Season is over ACCEPT it

Joe Bacci August 15, 2009 at 5:39 pm

Thats why you charge the mound.

Mingo August 15, 2009 at 6:06 pm

Hard to do that laying on your back.

KD August 15, 2009 at 6:10 pm

If Santana were a man and actually hit the guy, he wouldn’t hit a home run off him. Just pathetic.

wlaadair August 15, 2009 at 6:36 pm

goes to show what a piss poor teammate Santana is, Ollie or Pelfrey would have leveled someone suspension or not.

I hope that David is ok, thoughts and prayers are with him.

Chiefman August 15, 2009 at 7:21 pm

So, he’s not a man? You’ve checked the appropriate places and seen the evidence?

KD August 15, 2009 at 8:17 pm

There’s a website where you can put in a name and they tell you if he’s a man or not.

Santana should have drilled Cain in the head. He had two opportunities (ABs) to work with.

Chiefman August 15, 2009 at 7:20 pm

Yeah, shoulda killed , right? Have blood come souting out f the guys ears.,…would that make you happy? Maybe the players should just go mover to the SF dugout with bats and club all of the Giants into bloody pulp.

Do you honestly believe that the Mets should have thrown a baseball at the head of Matt Cain and potentially given him a permanent brain injury? I mean, are you seriously saying that should be done? Do you also favor capital players for players who miss signs of drop popups?

ericloz August 15, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Easy Chief. his user name explains it all…

No sense getting worked up…Us adults know Santana handled it correctly…

Let’s just hope David’s Ok and can come back in a couple of weeks, just to clear the cobwebs and have him get over any jitters before the off season…

You don’t want him thinking about this the entire off season.

Chiefman August 15, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Thanks you, ericloz. You are right. No sense getting worked up. Appreciate the sanity check.

I almost lost it when I saw Cain hit Wright. Is there really a need to go and head hunt on our only hitter? That smelled intentional, and he needs to pay for it. Don’t hit him in the head, but hit him. Screw this go for some other guy and throw behind him. Its a shame that Cain isn’t as much of a humanitarian as Chief is.

We have Angel Freaking Pagan, Anderson Hernandez, and Daniel Murphy in our line-up, is there really a need

sincekindergarten August 16, 2009 at 5:50 am

Obviously, sarcasm doen’t translate well here. Cain did show some remorse immediately. However, you don’t get to be 12-4 (with 50 games left) on a team like the Giants without some control of your pitches. My guess is that it was supposed to be a high-and-inside fastball that he overthrew. Why he’d want to throw that at that time is beyond me.

But, it’s a fitting end to the season–as our last “core player” goes down. He probably will want to rush back, but should be treated like the “face of the franchise” that he is, and told to shut it down.

Besides, about my usedid, I was in kindergarten long before you were alive, probably. Let’s put it this way–the Mets were on their way to their first WS then.

Matt Cain is a jerk!

dwright5_godsend August 16, 2009 at 9:59 am

It didn’t look intentional, but that really should not matter. The only difference should be if it was intentional Cain would get one in the ear as well. Not intentional, he should have gotten one in the back.

It’s not about doing damage, just sending a message and STICKING UP FOR YOU TEAMMATES. I agree with the person above who said Johan is an awful teammate. The only people who have an excuse not to hit a batter in that situation are rookies, and I’m willing to bet even Bobby Parnell would have sent a message.

A fastball between the numbers isn’t going to hurt Cain, just make him think twice about throwing inside again. Show some balls, guys.

right on the money. Santana is a wonderfully skilled player but in his 2 years on this team I have not appreciated his attitude and personality. He seems like a me first guy (maybe its the big contract, idk i didnt follow him in Minn). He is never afraid to throw his teammates under the bus after a 2-1 loss or a 1-0 loss. He shows up Manuel for taking him out in that game when he was giving up bombs all over the place. The guy can pitch there no doubt about that but I’m not so sure hes a leader or for that matter even a good teammate.

I cannot believe there are people on here saying Santana did the right thing, and we shouldnt throw at someone on their team. None of you have ever played baseball, and if you did you were probably terrible. If someone hits your best player in the head and knocks him out of the game giving him a concussion, intentional or not you retaliate. Heck Id hit 2 guys for that. You can not let teams see that you are push overs bc they will come in and intimidate you and push you around. This organization has always been soft, look at the Estes/Clemens thing that was a joke. Mike Pelfrey is big and throws hard he needs to put someone on their butt today or I will lose what little respect I have left for him, this coaching staff, and the rest of the players on this team.
