Quote: Livan to Stay in Rotation, for Now

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

Following the game, Jerry Manuel said, when asked whether Livan Hernandez will get another start:

“We’re gonna stay where we are, at this period, as I speak… as of right now, we’re gonna stay in rotation.”

Manuel said he does not have a strong alternative to step in and replace Hernandez in the rotation.

Hernandez is 2–5 with a 8.71 ERA in his last eight starts.

Post Game: Giants 10 Mets 1

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 10:23 pm

The Mets lost to the Giants by the score of 10 to 1 in Citi Field tonight.

For a full recap and boxscore, click here.

The Least You Should Know:

Yet again, Livan Hernandez got lit up like a pinball machine, allowing six runs and 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work.

The Mets had eight hits and left nine men on base, and scored their only run a single from Gary Sheffield in the third inning.

Misc., Etc., and other Stuff:

If good pitching give you a chance to win every night, Jerry, why are you still leaning on Livan Hernandez, who has now allowed 18 runs and 26 hits in his last three starts.  Yes, 26 hits.  His pitches just have no life, no movement, it looked like he was throwing BP tonight, just chucking decent fastballs over the plate, with no action on them at all.

Paging Mr. Figueroa, Mr. Nelson Figueroa, please begin preparing for a start in five days, thank you.

Hey, I hear the Mets next promotional night will be to give away a free meal with the purchase of a season-ending surgery?

I think the Mets stepped in the batter’s box tonight.  But, I mean, at this point, who really knows any more.

In Case You Missed It:

To watch SNY.TV’s Post Game Extra, featuring clips from the game; quotes from Jerry Manuel, and analysis from Keith Hernandez and Gary Cohen, use the video player in the sidebar of MetsBlog.com later tonight.

The Next Series:

The Mets begin a three-game series with the Braves tomorrow at Citi Field, with Oliver Perez facing Derek Lowe.

…yes, perez vs. lowe… how about that for a coincidence

News: Alex Cora to have Season-Ending Surgery

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

The Mets have announced that infielder Alex Cora will have season-ending surgery on the torn ligaments in both of his thumbs.

Cora was on the disabled list earlier in the season with the same injury, which forced him to play with a splint when he returned.

Cora re-aggravated the thumb in late July.

…i can’t help but wonder if cora would’ve had these surgeries a while back, had it not been for Jose Reyes, and the slew of other injuries the team has suffered

Update, 9:38 pm, by Michael Baron:

i definitely commend cora’s grittiness… we knew he was playing hurt and i think he felt compelled to play because the club was missing reyes and i know from having the same injury that it wasn’t easy for him to tolerate the pain he was in

News: Aubrey Huff traded to the Tigers

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

The Tigers acquired DH-1B Aubrey Huff from the Orioles, in exchange for minor league RHP Brett Jacobson.

…from what i recall, the Mets contacted the O’s, and other teams, in June, in an effort to upgrade their offense, but found the asking price for players like huff to be to steep

In a post to Twitter, @jma201 asked me, “Why isn’t Omar Minaya pulling moves like this?”

why… because he knows it’s no longer June… i mean, what possible need does huff fill for the Mets, right now, since he’ll be a free agent at the end of this season… i’m all for questioning minaya, and i think it’s totally fair to wonder why he didn’t make a move for huff earlier in the season when his roster was spiraling out of control… but, thankfully, with just 50 games left, omar made no effort to trade a minor leaguer to get huff, who is in the final year of his contract

Quote: David Wright is feeling Better

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

David Wright talked to reporters from Citi Field today, and said, though he still has a headache, he feels better, he has a lot of energy, and he looks forward to getting back on the field as soon as possible.

He was put on the 15–day disabled list yesterday, with post-concussion symptoms, after being hit in the head with a 94–mph fastball from Matt Cain on Saturday.

Wright said Cain reached out to him, as did other players from the Giants, to see if he was OK and to state the HBP was an accident.

He said he wants to play again this season, and has requested the team put him on a plan to get back as soon as he is eligible.

According to Kevin Burkhardt of SNY, on Twitter, Ryan Church also reached out to Wright, to see how he was feeling.

News: Billy Wagner is in the House, Friday Possible

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Update, 5:32 pm:

Wagner pitched a bullpen session today, and is expected to speak with reporters before the game.

To see video of Wagner’s bullpen session, tune in to SNY’s Mets Pre Game Live starting at 6:30 pm.

Update, 4:42 pm:

The Mets announced Wagner will workout with the team this week, in hopes of being activated from the DL on Friday.

Original Post:

Billy Wagner has been spotted in the Mets locker room.

Wagner’s last pitch for the Mets was Aug. 2 of last season, after which he had season-ending elbow surgery.

He has 385 career saves.

…from what i can gather, wagner is scheduled to speak with reporters tonight, which would suggest he’ll be activated tomorrow, not tonight… by the way, as noted in the previous post, David Wright will talk to reporters before the game

… anyway… wagner has a lot to prove… the Mets may be able trade him to a contender if he pitches well… i’m sure he just wants to prove to himself and others that he’s able to pitch, for the sake of pitching… he’ll be a free agent this off season, and so he could leave for a new team in search of those missing 15 saves, which could net the Mets compensatory draft picks, assuming they offer him arbitration… and so, there is a lot hinging on his return

good luck, billy… and welcome back

Pepsi Refresh Pre-Game: Giants vs. Mets

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 3:54 pm

The Mets conclude their four-game series tonight with the Giants in Citi Field at 7:10 pm, with Livan Hernandez (7-7, 5.28 ERA) taking on Joe Martinez (2-1, 6.00).

Cory Sullivan will hit leadoff, followed in order by Luis Castillo, Gary Sheffield, Daniel Murphy, Jeff Francoeur, Fernando Tatis at third base, Brian Schneider behind the plate, and Anderson Hernandez at short.

Livan Hernandez has walked seven batters and allowed 12 runs and 15 hits in his last two starts.  He allowed five runs and eight hits over five innings against the Giants earlier this May.

This is Martinez’s third career start.  He has never faced the Mets.

Opinion: The Cream, No-Name, Mr. Met Uniform

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

The gigantic NY is a bit much.

Otherwise, I like the cream color, the no names on the back, and the Mr. Met patch, all featured on the current throwback uniform being worn by the Mets this series, as the team honors their National League heritage.

I’d like to see these exact uniforms, with Mr. Met, the no names, the single stripe, along with the blue traditional hats, but instead of the hideous NY, use the old school Mets logo on the front – no black, no shadow, just the blue and orange Mets name.

The image in this post can give you a sense of the cream color, the no name, the Mr. Met, etc., which I think is a nice look.

Earlier this season, the Mets sent out an online survey via e-mail to a select group of fans, which asked a variety of questions about the current uniform scheme, including, “Which Mets game jersey is your favorite,” “Do you think the Mets should wear the pinstripes jersey more often,” and, “Why do you think the Mets should not keep the black jersey?”

In other words, come on, Mets, you know you want to devolve in to a more traditional, stable, clean-looking uniform.

So, pick one, and let’s do this.

Poll: Keep Wright on the DL?

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

Update, 3:02 pm:

Wright will be in Citi Field tonight, and is expected to speak with reporters prior to tonight’s game.

Update, 2:10 pm:

Speaking of concussions, this article from Newsday, using material from Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus, looks back at recent concussion injuries from MLB, such as Padres 2B Edgar Gonzalez and Reds 3B Scott Rolen from this season.

In an eerie report for the New York Times, which ran three days before Wright got hit in the head, David Waldstein looks at the league’s new batting helmets, of which Wright says:

“If it provides more protection, then I’m all for it.  I’m not worried about style or looking good out there. I’m worried about keeping my melon protected.”

Original Post:

The Mets put David Wright on the 15–day disabled list yesterday with what was described as ‘post-concussion symptoms.’

Omar Minaya said yesterday, when asked if Wright would return this season, “There’s going to be a plan in place for him to recuperate… We’ll see where we are after the 15 days.”

This leads me to believe the Mets are open to keeping Wright out of action through the end of the season, if need be, but will decide a course of action as he continues to rest and progresses in his recovery.

The Mets are 55–62, and would basically need to go 35–10 through the rest of the season to make the post season.

The question doesn’t just apply to Wright, though.  Should the Mets bring back Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado, John Maine and J.J. Putz, as well?  Or, should they just let them all rest, to guarantee each player is fresh and 100 percent for next season.

In the case of Beltran, Maine, Reyes and Wright, unless the Mets believe they can help lead this team this season to that 35–10 mark, none of these players should return.  I mean, what’s the point?  Tickets?  OK, maybe, but what’s done is done, it seems.  Why mess up 2010, you know what I mean?

From what I understand, the idea all along was to pick up Putz’s option and trade him.  However, it will be difficult to do so if he is unable to show what he’s capable of doing before the off season.

Similarly, Delgado is probably going to do whatever he can to get back on field, because he’s going to be a free agent.

Buzz: Draft Deadline Tonight, Mets on Matz

by Matthew Cerrone on August 17th, 2009 at 10:42 am

The deadline for signing draft picks is tonight at midnight.

Last week, Adam Rubin of the Daily News said the Mets will sign their top draft-pick Steven Matz, a lefthander from Ward Melville High School on Long Island, by tonight’s deadline.

However, yesterday, Jim Callis of Baseball America wrote, “Matz’s deal isn’t close to done and isn’t going as smoothly as you might think.”

To see a scouting video of Matz, click here.

…like i wrote last week, from what i can gather, he’s likely to advance pretty quickly next season, though he’s still a ways off from seeing the big leagues… he’s a big kid, strong, with a decent fastball, but he’s not afraid to pitch inside… he has a decent curve ball and an advanced change-up… in a perfect world, he grows up to look like Barry Zito, minus the ridiculous contract and surfing…

To learn more about the 17 of 49 players the Mets have yet to sign, check out this post from Alex Nelson of Mets Geek.
