News: Alex Cora to have Season-Ending Surgery

by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets have announced that infielder Alex Cora will have season-ending surgery on the torn ligaments in both of his thumbs.

Cora was on the disabled list earlier in the season with the same injury, which forced him to play with a splint when he returned.

Cora re-aggravated the thumb in late July.

…i can’t help but wonder if cora would’ve had these surgeries a while back, had it not been for Jose Reyes, and the slew of other injuries the team has suffered

Update, 9:38 pm, by Michael Baron:

i definitely commend cora’s grittiness… we knew he was playing hurt and i think he felt compelled to play because the club was missing reyes and i know from having the same injury that it wasn’t easy for him to tolerate the pain he was in

Nicely played Michael. I have to agree, major kudos to Cora, who was a trooper for us this season. It will probably go unnoticed by many a Mets fan due to the loss this season has been, but the guy played and played hurt when we needed him, and did a smooth and admirable job at a premium defensive position.

Cora was a great pickup this year. I hope they re-sign him for another season as he’d be a great bench player.

I disagree.. we hardly got 2 million bucks out of him…

Yea lets be honest for $2 million we don’t need a veteran back up infielder who hits .250.

I agree that he played hard and it’s appreciated however we could allocate $2 million elsewhere…

Cora was invaluable. He was both a starting infielder for half the season AND, before Francouer, probably the biggest locker room leader.

A-Hearn will play the same positions for 1/4 the money, but Cora is the type of player who end up on lots of championship teams.

Updating my post from Sunday with the Mets’ DL-ineup:

Reyes – SS
Alex Cora – 2B
Beltran – CF
Delgado – 1B
Wright – 3B
F-Mart – RF
Lucas Duda – LF [AA DL - he had 41 games in LF]
Mike Nickeas – C [AA DL]

Maine – SP
Niese – SP
Nieve – SP
Ryan Coultas – SP [AA DL]
Dillon Gee – SP [AAA DL]

Carlos Muniz – RP [AAA DL]
Wagner – Setup
Putz – Closer

Also, for a laugh, go to http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/depth-chart/NYM and look at the Mets’ most commonly used lineups this year. The 2 most common (5 each) were the opening day lineup with Schneider and the opening day lineup substituting Castro for Schneider. Only 3 of those players – Murphy, Castillo & Schneider – are still active with the club.

Matt – Can you check with Elias Sports Bureau and see if there has EVER been a team with as many injuries to their starters as the Mets have had this year? They must be approaching some sort of record.
