Opinion: The Cream, No-Name, Mr. Met Uniform

By Matthew Cerrone on Aug 17, 2009, 2:34 pm

The gigantic NY is a bit much.

Otherwise, I like the cream color, the no names on the back, and the Mr. Met patch, all featured on the current throwback uniform being worn by the Mets this series, as the team honors their National League heritage.

I’d like to see these exact uniforms, with Mr. Met, the no names, the single stripe, along with the blue traditional hats, but instead of the hideous NY, use the old school Mets logo on the front – no black, no shadow, just the blue and orange Mets name.

The image in this post can give you a sense of the cream color, the no name, the Mr. Met, etc., which I think is a nice look.

Earlier this season, the Mets sent out an online survey via e-mail to a select group of fans, which asked a variety of questions about the current uniform scheme, including, “Which Mets game jersey is your favorite,” “Do you think the Mets should wear the pinstripes jersey more often,” and, “Why do you think the Mets should not keep the black jersey?”

In other words, come on, Mets, you know you want to devolve in to a more traditional, stable, clean-looking uniform.

So, pick one, and let’s do this.

I dont like the BLACK at all. I do like the name and nuber on the back and the METS with the number on the front, in white or pin stripe, I also like the blue and orange hat. Just my thoughts.

I hate the Black uniforms with a PASSION (almost as much as I love the Mets). I hate the black hats and the black shadows.
I love the blue pinstripe unis with the blue and orange hats.
And Matt I agree almost completely!
I love the cream uniforms. Though I don’t mind the NY at all…I would prefer the Mets script or New York.
The only good thing the Phillies have ever done is come out with that cream uniform of theres…hopefully the Mets stick with something similar to this.

Absolutely agree. My wife and I were saying the exact same thing. LOVED the cream color with the blue and orange stripes around the colars and sleeves. Aside from the giant “NY,” the uniforms looked excellent. Slap a scripts “Mets” along the front and we’ve got a nice new home uniform that can replace the awful (IMO) black ones.

I actually like the giant “NY” on the front—they went Roosevelt/Taft/Wilson on us.

And I agree, Matt—these new uniforms highlight the need for a stable, clean-looking uniform. From a branding standpoint, the Mets are a wreck. All sorts of different colors, different fonts, different messages, shoddy and dated designs—they really need to rework the brand identity, rather than heap more conflicting content/junk into their gift shops and onto the field.

I agree that the giant NY works for me in the context of a special jersey for throwback day. It’s got a great classic baseball feel. I felt like calling them the Met Stockings ;)

However, for everyday use I think I’d prefer the Mets script or Maybe Mets spelled out in the typeface they use for their road grays.

I prefer bright white, Mr Met patch and no name. I like the traditional blue and orange hats. No black at all. And no black shadows under the team logo. And here’s something I’ve wanted to see for years: A mandatory high sock rule.

i like the names on the back, the uniforms were okay i’d rather them be white not cream with mets across the front (i like the way they have new york across the grey uniforms) i did like the mr. met

i like the blue and orange hats, they are traditional and i do like the high socks.

this uniform was creative, classy, and traditional. what is not to like? If we keep the NY they should experiment with using our NY font that is on the hats, it can be a bit more bold like this, but that would tie it all together better…

the further we can get away from that two toned schizo hat the better…

why these guys would want to wear a black uniform in the summer is beyond me anyway… absorbs all the heat.

the front of the uniforms should just say:
    “Hospital for Special Surgery”

and the uniforms should just be patient gowns so they don’t even have to change when they come off the field. Heck, install an MRI machine in the clubhouse and they could get themselves checked between innings.

As long as there are no-names in the uniforms, there may as well be no names on the uniforms. Hoy-oh!

Seriously, though, I can appreciate the hardcore traditionalist approach regarding no names on the uniforms, but it’s unrealistic from a business standpoint. You sell more jerseys (particularly to “casual fans”) if they have names on the backs. And even though you and I may know everyone on the team by their face and/or number, most people watching at home need the names just to keep track of who’s on the mound or in LF, etc. It’s a nice touch every once in awhile, and it placates those of us who appreciate it, but it’s not viable as a permanent approach.

PG, I wholey agree with your sentiment that marketing drives the need for names on the back of the uniforms. However, you need only look across town to see the exception to your rule.

The only time a Yankee player has their name on their back is while in their blue batting practice/spring training jersey (which I’m not even sure about) or when they make an All-Star team and wear one of those direct to sale jerseys. I laugh whenever I see a “YANKEE FAN” wearing pinstripes that have a name on the back. It’s not a real yankee jeresey. The same goes for Boston home unis, too.

The bottom line is, if a fan wants a jersey with a name on it, they can have it, regardless of whether the player has it on the field.

I hated Mets in Black when it was convceived.
I hate Mets in Black to this day.
I do not like Mets at all.

That said I am more concerned who wears their uniform than what patches and color scheme is chosen.

I don’t know of anyone who likes those black uniforms. Frankly I think I’d take those blue ST uniforms over the black ones. But they’ve been around for 10 years now, so I guess Jeffy likes ‘em (haha)

I did like the cream-colored uniforms though. And I agree, replace the giant N Y with the traditional orange and blue Mets script and its good to go.

I liked the jerseys. I think it would be cool if they wore them for all Giants games. It does a great job of celebrating the NY National league baseball’s past. Its a great nod to John Joseph McGraw and Christy Mathewson.

I am partial to the old pinstripes for everday use. Whatever though. I think I would buy an Old School NY mets jersey if they became available.

Form a sales stand point, I guess the more jersey variety the better.

Agreed on ditching the black unis. Away, gray unis with NEW YORK across the front. Home, I prefer the white with single pinstripe down the side. Either Mets across the front or NY logo from hat on left side by the heart. Stick with blue and orange hats.

Note – I didn’t think that this would be the most optimistic topic for discussion in mid-August. Wow, I definitely want to erase 2009 season from memory.

Just a matter of time before Fred breaks these jerseys out:

Off topic, but the small market Oakland A’s just signed high school catcher Max Stassi, a first-round talent who fell to fourth round because of signability, to a $1.5 million contract.

Would have loved to see the Mets grab him in the third round. But anyway, more evidence that there’s no excuse for not signing Matz.

I was hoping they could land Stassi, too, when I saw he was stil available. Sadly, the A’s had an opportunity before the Mets.

I think this team needs a complete overhaul after this season and having these “throwback” uniforms become the staple would be a welcome change. I was always against uniform changes and love the traditional white with blue and orange caps. However, these past few years I have been so discouraged that I am ready for a complete change.

I wouldn’t mind these exact uniforms or possibly the cream, no name, Mr. Met with Mets across the front in script. Perfect.

Count me as one who liked the black jersey’s. Didn’t like the black n blue hats (they hit too close to home this season, BA dum, ching!) but the all black were cool.

Also liked the snow whites with the blue caps.

Never a big fan of the pinstripes, they’re just OK in m view. (Sorry Howie)

the pinstripes without the pipes look like UGLY PAJAMAS. everyone complains about the black but those duds are the real offenders.

In general agreement with the masses. I’d just ditch the snow whites and use this uniform, exchanging the NY with the standard script logo (I don’t care as much as others about the black drop script, I think it gives the name depth which is kind of nice). I’d also be okay with Cream and the traditional block “New York” lettering.

Use the cream on Sundays and interleague. Ditch black. Have a Gray “New York” and a Gray “Mets”. Blue hats only. You want variety, have one with an orange dot and one with a traditional blue dot on top.

There can always be black, pink, green, and mauve for fan choices. But I would love to see them go with those simple, classic styles on the field. Love the Mr. Met logo on the sleeve as well–perfect for alternate uniform logo.

i like matt’s idea, but mainly because my favorite jersey is the white non-striped version. i don’t mind the black jerseys at all because they remind me of the piazza era but i agree they are used too often.

at home, i would go with the black once a week and the ’86 v-neck once a week (i HATE the pinstripe button unis without the 80s piping) and otherwise some amalgamation of matt’s suggestion and the already existing white jerseys. on the road, we should always wear NEW YORK instead of METS.

also, i think all jerseys should have names except for specialty throwbacks. the yanks and sox at home skip the names out of tradition but it’s not our tradition (at least not in a meaningful way).

    I agree with Matt 100%.

Above all, drop the black forever. And stick to one uniform for home and one uniform for the road.

No special once a week uni, or uni for interleague games or special throwbacks to uniforms they never wore or Mercury Met futuristic unis.

Its called a UNIFORM. KEEP THEM UNIFORM!!!
