Quote: David Wright is Embarassed

by Matthew Cerrone on August 18th, 2009 at 9:15 am

David Wright stood with his back against a wall yesterday for 20 minutes, surrounded by dozens of reporters, with cameras, pads and voice recorders, and answered questions about being hit with a 94–mph fastball, being on the DL and dealing with post-concussion symptoms.

“I’m embarrassed to be on the DL,” Wright said.  “I want to play.  I’m supposed to play.  I’m not supposed to be on the 15-day DL.  I take a lot of pride in playing every day.”

three things:

there has been some buzz around the team for a while now suggesting wright is very disappointed in Jose Reyes for missing so much time on the disabled list this season, and maybe even expressed so much to reyes the last time he was in town… i wonder if wright’s statement, above, clarifies the idea behind that rumor

second, from what i understand, it takes a few days at least to determine just how serious the injury is… and so, the plan is to keep him shut down, go slow, and continue to examine wright to determine how best to get him on the field again… it sounds to me, though, like wright might miss the rest of the season, because there are all sorts of unknowns with head injuries like this

…lastly, i appreciate davids passion and desire to be on the field, and i love that he means it, but the Mets did the right thing – and he has nothing to be ashamed about… there is no need for wright to risk further injury, despite how he things he feels… and, by pulling him off the stage, and taking the option of returning off the table, they avoided the exact scenario that got them in trouble in the past – be it with reporters or with the player

In a glowing report for MLB.com, Marty Noble writes about Wright’s leadership skills, his upbringing, and how teammates and opponents view the young third baseman on and off the field.

Quote: Wagner Focused on Pitching, not Trades

by Matthew Cerrone on August 18th, 2009 at 8:39 am

Billy Wagner worked out in Citi Field yesterday, and told reporters he will throw a bullpen session this afternoon.

He said, once he returns to action, he will at first need multiple days off between outings, before being able to pitch every day.

Jerry Manuel later told reporters Wagner will be activated Friday.

Wagner said he is happy to be pitching, and it does not matter how he will be used in the bullpen.

“11 months ago I thought my career was over,” he pointed out.

obviously, there will be lots of buzz about the Mets looking to trade wagner, and i’m sure teams will have interest… wagner has a full no-trade clause, but it’s hard to believe he’ll stand in the way of being moved to a contending team for a month

Wagner, on rumors that he could eventually be traded, said:

“Honestly, the whole trade thing, I haven’t thought about it.  I’ve just been working to get back and pitch.  I’m a New York Met today, and I’m happy to be a Met, I’m gonna go out there and pitch, and if something like that happens, then I’ll go somewhere else and pitch.”

the best part, actually, is that, from what i understand, wagner took issue with how the question was asked of him, looked the reporter in the eye and said, ‘Are you gonna put words in my mouth, or will you actually write what I say.’… ouch… but, that’s the attitude i like knowing he also brings to the mound…

News: Mets sign 1st Pick Stephen Matz

by Matthew Cerrone on August 18th, 2009 at 6:37 am

According to Keith Law of ESPN.com, the Mets signed Stephen Matz, their first overall pick, for $895,000.

…yes, the Mets essentially paid $400,000 over slot, for those who have been concerned they never buck the system

“Matz has some violence in his delivery,” Law added, “but he’s athletic and has shown feel for both a changeup and a curveball while touching 94.”

Matz graduated from Ward Melville High School on Long Island.

To see a scouting video of Matz, click here.

from what i can gather, Matz and his family are long-time Mets fans, which only makes sense, since they live on Long Island and their last name is Matz… i mean, how could they not be Mets fans

Speaking of prospects…
