Quote: Gary Sheffield is Skeptical

by Matthew Cerrone on August 19th, 2009 at 10:08 am

Gary Sheffield expects to end this season either out of baseball, or on another team, explains Larry Brooks of the New York Post, who names two teams that could pick up Sheffield if he is eventually released.

sad, but true, i live in fear every day that Omar Minaya will reward sheffield with the Marlon Anderson Deal – you know, the surprise, two-year contract for an aging bat off the benchhi, Julio Franco, how are you today

…sheffield has done well for the Mets, no question… but, like i have written before, if sheffield is on the Mets next season than something went very wrong this off season

I’m Reading: Rebuilding the 2010 Mets

by Matthew Cerrone on August 19th, 2009 at 9:37 am

Mike Silva of NY Baseball Digest uses Strat-O-Matic to determine whether Mark Teixeira or Joe Mauer should win the American League MVP.

oh, mike, Keith Hernandez would be so proud… he loves Strat-o-Matic, i believe

According to stats used by Sam Page of Amazin Avenue, the Mets current roster can be expected to go roughly .500 team next season; so, Page lists four things the team’s GM must do this off season, to build and contend with the Phillies.

In a post to the Daily Stache, Michael Ganci explains, regardless of wins or losses, “The Mets are part of my life.”

Steve from the Eddie Kranepool Society reminds Mets fans to enjoy the summer, ‘because it doesn’t last forever.’

In a post to Take the 7 Train, Andrew Tworischuk asks, “What is Livan Hernandez’s problem?”

Lastly, Dave of Mets Lifer reveals the 2009 version of Charlie O’Brien.

Note: The Mets like Derek Lowe

by Matthew Cerrone on August 19th, 2009 at 6:05 am

In the fourth inning last night against Derek Lowe, the Mets sent 14 men to the plate, scored eight runs and had 10 hits, which is a franchise record.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, courtesy of ESPN.com, it was the most hits any pitcher allowed in one inning in more than two years.

“It’s one of those things, you didn’t want it to end,” Jeff Francoeur said after the game.

Lowe had been unbeaten since July 5, and 4–0 with a 2.89 ERA in his last five starts.

This season, he is 12–8 with a 4.45 ERA, including 19 Quality Starts, i.e., at least six innings pitched, while allowing three runs or less.

The Braves signed Lowe to a four-year, $60 million this past off season, while the Mets signed Perez for $36 million over three years.

it’s not the best stat line… however, in the off season, the reason i advocated signing him instead of Oliver Perez, is because of the 19 quality starts… he is consistent… he’s usually healthy… and you know what you’re gonna get, day in and day out… which is literally the opposite of everything perez is… the point is, the Mets cannot make this same mistake again… he has got to find a Johan Santana a reliable partner in that rotation… at least one other pitcher who can be counted on, and not be wrapped in a storyline full of maybe, hope and potential

News: The New York Matz

by Matthew Cerrone on August 19th, 2009 at 5:35 am

The Mets officially introduced LHP Steven Matz on Tuesday, their first pick in the 2009 draft, who signed for $895,000, roughly $400,000 more than MLB recommended for that slot.

“It’s surreal.  It’s awesome,” he told reporters, sitting in the dugout of Citi Field yesterday.  “When I heard I was drafted by the Mets, I was thrilled.”

Matz, 18, grew up a Mets fan in Stony Brook, L.I.

To learn more about how Matz was born in to a family of Mets fans, check out Bob Herzog’s report for Newsday.

…oh, man, it just hit me, this kid was born in 1990… so, basically, when i was playing freshman baseball in high school, matz wasn’t born yet… yikes

Matz told reporters his favorite player is Johan Santana.

Matz will be assigned to the rookie-league Gulf Coast Mets this weekend, with other recent draft picks.

by the way, the NY Matts was the name of my wall-ball team in elementary school

Speaking of the draft:

According to Baseball America, the Mets spent the least amount of money on top draft picks of any team in the major leagues, totaling $1.9 million on seven players.

“To say the Mets are not aggressive in the draft isn’t adequate,” Baseball America’s Jim Callis told the New York Times. “They are nothing close to aggressive.”

In the Times report, which breaks down the team’s spending on draft picks, among other things, David Waldstein writes:

“The Mets did not have a first-round pick this year, which lowered the amount they would spend. But they also did not sign their fifth- or sixth-round picks, which lowers their overall total, but also suggests they were not willing to spend as freely on those picks.”

That said, in a report for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark explains why the current draft system is broke, ‘and needs to be blown up.’

Note: Oliver Perez’s Knee is Hurting

by Matthew Cerrone on August 19th, 2009 at 5:18 am

Oliver Perez allowed four runs and five hits in five innings in a win against the Braves last night.

i was impressed… i was… ollie got beat on two pitches for home runs, but otherwise looked pretty good… this, plus knowing he entered the game with a 2.23 ERA in previous three starts, has me encouragedthere is hope yet

However, he hurt his right knee covering first base in the top of the fourth inning.

…of course he did… i mean, why not… ugh… plus, it’s same knee that put him on the disabled list for most all of May and June…

“It was hurting a little bit.  I want to rest and see how it feels,” Perez said. “I want to continue to pitch, but I have to take care of my knee.”

here’s a thought… how about the Mets put every one else on the disabled list, too, and just let them all rest at this point
