Heath: Jose Reyes Might be Gun-Shy

by Matthew Cerrone

Jerry Manuel said yesterday he doesn’t expect Jose Reyes to return to the Mets this season.

“I am kind of working on the assumption he won’t be back,” Manuel said.

…from what i understand, reyes has been pretty idle for the last week or so… and, furthermore, the team, and some players on the team, are not happy about it… the buzz from Citi Field suggests much of jose’s delay might be in his head, not his leg, in that he might be gun-shy to push it for fear of making things work…

…i can’t say i blame him, given how much he struggled with leg injuries earlier in his career… and, while, today, given the standings, he should take it slow… i seriously hope this was not the case back in May…

Well, you can also blame the medical staff as well, as we all know.

One week it was one thing, the next week it was another.

Why do you think Beltran was so ticked?

VCarver August 22, 2009 at 10:12 am

Beltran was never “ticked.”

Stop blaming the doctors.

Beckfan August 22, 2009 at 10:15 am

Seriously?

VCarver August 22, 2009 at 10:18 am

Seriously.

wright5murph28 August 22, 2009 at 10:43 am

beltran was annoyed, he was annoyed with the mets for allowing him to play for a month and make his bruise worse, i guess he wasnt told about the severity it could cause

VCarver August 22, 2009 at 10:51 am

Whether he was annoyed with the “mets” is another matter. We’re talking about the medical doctors here. He was not annoyed at the medical doctors. The following is an excerpt from a Daily News article:

“To that end, Beltran also discounted suggestions that he has been among multiple Mets unhappy with the team’s medical staff this season.

“Honestly, I made all the decisions,” said Beltran, who remained in the lineup for several weeks after first reporting problems with his knee. “When I was feeling the pain, I went to the doctor and asked for a cortisone shot because I wanted to stay with the team. With all those guys out, it was going to be difficult to have one more guy out.

“So I tried to play through it for a month. But I don’t regret what I did. I did it for the team. I just wanted to do what’s best for the team.”"

If he were mad at anyone why would he be trying to get back on the field now … in a lost year???

wright5murph28 August 22, 2009 at 11:13 am

you have a good point, but at the same time, is beltran really going to bash the mets front office and medical personnel in public through the media, probably not, so he would say all the correct things which he did

VCarver August 22, 2009 at 11:24 am

Beltran is not shy or he’s not going to hide his displeasure. If he is really unhappy, he’s going to at most shut up about it — not say anything directly to the media.

In the article I quoted from, he goes out of his way to absolve the medical doctors. So I think he was speaking his mind.

wlaadair August 22, 2009 at 9:47 am

i don’t blame him for being cautious and he should take it slow but being completely idle for a week is not showing that he is serious about trying to help the team win at least some games.

JohnPacellasCap August 22, 2009 at 10:07 am

I have a hard time believing that players are upset with Reyes because they think its mental and he doesn’t want to get back this season. He’s suffered several setbacks in his attempts to get back as soon as possible. There’s nothing to play for at this point and most fans agree that he should not come back this season. No reason to rush anything and have yet another setback. He should be targeting spring training.

This seems more like a media creation to feed a long-standing perception that Reyes tends to dog it from time to time no matter how legitimate that perception really is. Besides, who on the current roster is even in the position to express such a sentiment.

Great, great comment, JP. You said it perfectly.

VCarver August 22, 2009 at 10:11 am

“…he might be gun-shy to push it for fear of making things work…”

Matt, do you mean “worse?”

No one should ever question the desire of another player to play through injuries. Sure, sometimes you have a real slacker like Pavano, but he is the rare exception.

I remember when they questioned Jose’s desire to play early in his career when he said he was injured. And it ended up he was playing on a fractured leg! So unless you know something for sure — or see Jose out dancing at night when he says he can’t play — then zip it!

And I don’t think the “medical staff” is an issue either.

ericloz August 22, 2009 at 10:46 am

I don’t know why everyone is so quick to blame. I’m glad this mob isn’t united, I can imagine us w/ pitchforks and torches massing in front of Citi screaming for the heads of Omar, Jerry, and Ray. I know it’s natural to place blame and find a fall guy, but injuries are a part of life and the number of injuries beggs an investigation. But come on, there is no conspiracy, nor medical malpractice. It’s really easy to play monday morning QB w/ these injuries, but until someone comes out and states that they intentionally sent someone out early against doctor’s orders, then there is no smoke.

I just find hard to believe that the entire staff @ Special Surgery and the training staff is inept.

VCarver August 22, 2009 at 10:55 am

Exactly, Eric. People forget that many other teams send their players to the Mets doctors for second opinions and even for primary care. The Mets’ doctors treated and/or performed surgery on Posada and Wang the last few years.

And the Mets trainers were able to keep the core pretty healthy for the last few years.

It’s just been a rash of back luck for the most part.

The only thing that may be questionable is the timing of putting players on the DL and the way the Mets FO gives out info to the media. But that is no reflection on the doctors and trainers.

2009_believe August 22, 2009 at 11:03 am

I would be inclined to agree with especially concerning the doctor’s but some of the injuries what me question something specially the Neive and the Niese injury in both situations (legging out an in-field hit, and stretching to cover first) both seem simple enough that they shouldn’t have torn a hamstring, this could of course be bad luck but because it happened twice i think something needs to be looked into – were they not conditioned properly before the game? etc

2009_believe August 22, 2009 at 11:08 am

i meant make me question

ravi3 August 22, 2009 at 12:50 pm

In all fairness, when Niese got hurt, the dirt gave out from under him, and he did a complete stretch. It’s hard to train for that if you just aren’t that flexible.

2009_believe August 22, 2009 at 10:41 am

i’m not sure if the medical staff is an issue but if he is in pain that he has to be afraid of making his leg worse and compromising future seasons. he did work to come back and hurt himself again, i’m sure we’ll never forget jose limping off the field and down into the clubhouse never to be seen again, i am sure he is under some sort of therapy schedule and doctor’s care so i find it hard to believe he is just doing nothing

Beltranmynewfavmet August 22, 2009 at 10:49 am

Like I’ve been saying for a long time, Reyes is one of the biggest causes of this team’s “soft” image. I still believe we should trade him if we can get any kind of significant value for him. Clay Bucholz and another BoSox prospect? In a heartbeat

wright5murph28 August 22, 2009 at 11:15 am

i agree, but id go for bigger….reyes, fmart + another low level prospect for halladay….they want a good SS in the deal, or so its been reported…

jamie_ August 22, 2009 at 1:35 pm

I think that’s nuts. Haven’t you seen what how lucky we are to have Reyes by the fact of us not having him this year? Trade one of the best 26 yr old everyday players at a premium position for a pitcher? Nuts.

Agee's Catch August 22, 2009 at 11:17 am

He’s either soft or he isn’t.

If we think he is soft, then so will 29 other teams. What value will he bring.

If he is really hurt, then we expect him to come back strong and he’s our shortstop.

I’m confused by bloggers who want to sell high on a player who has lowered his value. Can’t have it both ways.

I think it is pointless to bring him back. This team is going no where

2009_believe August 22, 2009 at 12:10 pm

great points and it seems more than ever 2009 is a lost season, i keep hearing people saying oh it’s great to come back and help us win a few games and help the team but what is the point in that to sacrifice the health of a player for a meaningless season. If we were in a pennant race things would be different but we aren’t. Why should Reyes push himself to come back and risk injury. Health is important.

jamie_ August 22, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Matt, when you say “some players on the team”, are you talking about anyone who’s been on the team for longer than 5 months, or are you talking about, say, Gary and Jeff?

Patrick August 22, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I only have this to say about “some players”.

Either say it with a microphone in front of your mug, or shut up.
