Oliver Perez has been diagnosed with patella tendon tendinosis in his right knee and will
have season-ending surgery.
…are you surprised… seriously, i hope you aren’t…
Perez was examined today by Dr. Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
The Mets expect Perez to be ready for Spring Training.
…i think i may use that red cross logo as the T in MetsBlog…
By the way, the Mets rotation is now Pat Misch, Tim Redding, Bobby Parnell, Nelson Figueroa and Mike Pelfrey.
Update, 3:58 pm:
Lance Broadway has been called up from Triple-A Buffalo to replace Perez.
Broadway was 5-9 with a 6.17 ERA combined with Buffalo and Charlotte.

Am I the only one that laughs at this stuff? Instead of crying over the injuries I find myself cracking up everytime I see another Met injury.
this one… i actually laughed pretty loud.
same here, i lost it, this is hilarious
The really funny part is that Broadway has better numbers than Ollie!
BTW…I made the Metsblog banner with the medical cross in it over lunch today. I sent it to what I think is Matt’s email…we’ll see what becomes of it.
It’s like the movie Groundhog Day. Everyday I go to metsblog.com and it’s another DL stint. I would be afraid to get on the team bus or plane at this point.
If you’re playing at home, the Mets’ rotation is now Mike Pelfrey, Pat Misch, Nelson Figueroa, Bobby Parnell and Tim Redding.
all the NL east teams can’t wait to play us…everyones got a shot at October now!
Ouch. should have kept Livan.
As bad as Livan was, he’s better than Misch as a starter. But its all about saving money now apparently and the Mets saved themselves 500k by cutting him.
I don’t think they saved anything by cutting him.
Livan signed with the nationals the other day for the prorated minimum so they save maybe 75K
incentives
i mean, while this isn’t good news, if this is one of the reasons ollie sucked so hard this year, maybe there’s hope for the next year
i should just work for the wilpon spin machine
…are you surprised… seriously, i hope you aren’t…
I believe this is supposed to read:
… are you upset… seriously, i hope you aren’t…
Again, the curse of the WBC. I really think the WBC has contributed in a big way to the Mets’ medical woes this season.
Every team had players in the WBC and none of them had injuries like this. Its just bad luck or bad trainers… Perez is the only guy that you could blame the WBC on because he didnt pitch often enough in Spring training to condition himself for the new season.
we did have the most players from any team going to the WBC…and its not so much the playing time, cause then you can argue what about Reyes (DR played 2 games, and he barely even played) but the factor I see would be players ramping it up earlier than usual, and harder earlier than usual. Perez def. Putz too, I mean he was ramping it up early to be the closer for the US. Obviously krod is fine. but delgado? maybe. Reyes, very possible, if he started running hard earlier.
But still, that said, most of these players are staying fit year round, so maybe it really is just a bad coincidence. Pitchers I can argue though.
Agreed, it just seems that the WBC participants have been in worse shape, Wright has the concussion but he also has been battling some leg issues that have nagged him all season long, probably from starting spring training early due to the WBC.
Just off the top of my head I can name Putz, Delgado, Reyes, Beltran, Peavy, Dice-K, Pedroia and Wright got hurt during it, Ollie, Volquez, Willy Tavares, Chipper, Soto, McCann, DeRosa, Scot Sheilds (Joel Hanrahan turned to crap,) and Carlos Guillen.
There are guys on the Mets too that got hurt that didnt play in the WBC… Ie. Santana.
It may have a little to do with it but for the most part it has to be bad luck. I mean last WBC we didnt have any issues that I could rememeber. Atleast not this severe.
See my post right below. Johan was going to play in the WBC and so he started to training early. If impacted him too.
Look at Peavy and Matsuzaka. Both out.
In fact, the Red Sox are blaming the WBC on Matsuzaka’s health issues this year.
If I’m not mistaken, Pedroia and Youkilis also spent time on the DL — though neither has had injuries as serious as the Mets.
And, as Starz said, the Mets had the most players in the WBC.
Even Johan. He didn’t play in it but he was going to and so he started his training early! Coming off of knee surgery! I wouldn’t be surprised it that impacted his health this year.
So, I think it’s clearly the curse of the WBC.
Yes that is true but he also started training early cause he was coming off of and recovering from knee surgery… He didnt pitch in the WBC and trained with the Mets during Spring Training…
The point is he started training earlier than he normally would have. He geared up to be game ready in early March instead of early April. A whole month earlier. When Beltran and Castillo had knee injuries the year before they needed EXTRA time to get ready for the season. Here Santana was coming off of knee surgery and he gave himself LESS time.
It probably impacted his health and stamina negatively throughout the season.
Santana had the exact same surgery on his elbow in 2003 with the Twins. WBC had absolutely no factor in Santana’s injury. None… I would like to blame it on that too but I would be wrong.
People have speculated that johan’s various injuries this spring have led to his current injuries. Because he might have changed his delivery to compensate.
In spring, they had to shut him down. And the spring problems could have been a result of him trying to get ready for the WBC.
I think it did have an impact on Johan.
He overcompensated because of his knee injury which they think may have put extra pressure on the arm. He had knee surgery on October 1st.
And if it was his knee injury he compensated for — instead of the sore arm he had in spring training — well then early and rushed preparation for the WBC probably prevented him from healing properly and might have even made his knee worse.
Which was the point I was making in regards to the lengthy knee recoveries Beltran and Castillo had the year before. Santana didn’t get that time because of the WBC.
lol do you always have to make the last point? Ok you win….
Lorenzo, look in the mirror.
I agree with you about the WBC though … I hate it and I think it does have something to do with some of the injuries in MLB but you cant blame every single one of them from the Mets on just that. Pagan, Schneider, Maine, F-Mart, Martinez (Reyes’s back up), etc. Its just bad luck or bad trainers..Somethings up with the Mets and I dont think we should just say WBC.
I never said the WBC was responsible for all of the Mets injuries woes.
I just said it has probably had a big impact on them. I believe it did. BIG.
Putz and Perez ..YES I agree…
The other 80 guys LOL I think it was bad luck or poor trainers.
I think it was more than Putz and Perez.
I think it was Santana, Matsuzaka, maybe even Delgado and Beltran. Both of them gearing up early for the WBC, perhaps too quickly, might have put undue physical strain on their bodies.
Maybe even Reyes too. They start out getting in shape early, cutting back on the time their bodies get to recuperate from the previous season, and fatigue can also set in. Which can lead to injuries.
I bet if someone does a study, they will find a high number of WBC players getting injured this year vs. non-WBC players. Someone will probably do this kind of study this winter.
I thought that according to you Delgados been hurt for three years and is old thats why? Now its the WBC fault. Make up your mind.
The WBC exacerbated injury risks and facilitated the actual injuries. I think that’s pretty clear with players like Santana.
The fact that Delgado already was old with a chronic hip injury was all the more reason to prevent him from playing.
Whatever you say…
Anyway The Wilpons and Omar are huge supporters of the WBC so yell at them not me.
If it was up to me I would get rid of the WBC because it is pointless and nothing good could come out of it.
does the hospital for special surgery have a psych ward?
also, i think metsblog membership should count for credit towards a degree from a licensed medical institution
hey, look on the bright side.
if you take that big $3.5 million we saved yesterday, Ollie’s only making $32.5 million for 3 years.
and Omar didnt want to give Lowe another year because?? Thats right because his name doesnt end in Hernandez/perez/rodriguez.
I am not prejudice but to me it seems like all of the “non latins” are busting their asses and getting made fun of as the laughing stock of the league (besides Santana).
You know Frenchy may not have the biggest bat, or murphy might not have the best glove/bat/mechanics, and wright may have to much weight on his shoulders but without them we may be worse then the Nationals.
Get rid of Omar and start from scratch with little players they may want to keep and go from there.
i think it had more to do with Lowe would be 40 after 4 years and would make more money than any of Oliver’s years. Plus Oliver would only be 31 in the last year of his deal. If omar could have signed Lowe for the same contract as Oliver, i dont think anyone in this room wouldnt make that move including Omar.
Exactly. Omar went after Lowe FIRST and only when the Braves offered the 4th year did the Mets back off and focus on Ollie as the next best option.
I can’t stand it when people throw out the “Omar loves Latins” card. Could it be that perhaps many of the best players in the MLB have their origins in Latin America? Santana, Sabathia, A-Rod, K-Rod, Rivera, Pujols, Hanley Ramierez, Reyes, Beltran, Guerrero? Just to name a few.
In addition to Ollie and K-Rod, Omar also brought in Green, Reed, Putz and Francouer in the past year. Plus he brought in Maine, Nady, Schneider and Church in past years and insisted Pelfrey was untouchable during the Santana talks in 2007/08. Omar may need to go, but saying he’s biased in favor of Latin players is just silly given the current makeup of the MLB.
Im just saying and I’m not a racist but out of the 40 guys on the Mets 40 main roster – 24 are Latino and the rest are white, black, & Asian.
Omars rosters have always been heavy favored towards Latinos… I dont think its racist to point out facts. See my post below.
Lorenzo, the fact that you are keeping tabs on the number of Latino players on the Mets is pretty indicative of your state of mind on the subject. Omar traded Endy Chavez (along with Heilman and Smith) for a whole slew of white ballplayers last offseason. He released Livan Hernandez and Jorge Sosa when they weren’t performing. The face of the Mets right now is one of the whitest white boys around (aka David Wright).
The fact is that there has been a large influx of Latin American players into baseball in general over the past 10-15 years (as well as Asian players). Major league organizations have realized the potential in these regions of the world and have begun to set up training camps in these locations. Latin American is a prime area because a camp can be set up cheaply, and the warm weather climate will allow baseball to be played all year round.
Whether Omar is the GM or not, Latin American players will always be a large percentage of a professional baseball team – especially those on the coasts.
I did a 30 second google search on the 40 man roster. I’m not keeping tabs on the amount of Latino players because for me I dont care if you’re white, black, yellow, purple, or orange I just want the best 25 players on my team to win a Championship. I remember in 2005 Mike Francessa and Mad Dog Russo questioned Omar multiple times about the amount of Latino players he was bringing in so dont think this topic is just being brought up by fans on this site.
P.S. Just for grins I went and looked at the Mets 40 man roster. I count 17 players with Latin names out of the 40 that are still on the roster – and I’m counting guys like Nelson Figueroa (who was born in the US) and Arturo Lopez and Wilson Valdez, who will probably be gone come Oct 5th.
If you look at the beginning of the season it is 24 or 25 but again it doesnt matter. I was just following up on hernandez’s point.
Um, A-Rod was born and raised in the states and Sabathia is Afro-American.
My bad on Sabathia. As for A-Rod (or Manny Ramierez for that matter) he was born in the US but is of Latin American origin.
you sir are r@cist
How could he be racist if his name is HernendezMustache4life lol… I dont think he came off to appear racist but you have to admit since Omar came over the Mets have been marketing towards the Latino brand. Whether it be Merengue night, Losmets.com on the uniforms, lineups consistently made up of Latino players, and even the guys that get called up from the minors seem to be Latino. I do feel Omar is a little biased towards his fellow countryman and I dont think it is racist to say so if facts back it up.
And I do think we need to change the culture of the organization because like anything too much of one thing isn’t good. We need to diversify.. We need more guys like Frenchy who will play with a busted hand and still hit two doubles and it has to start at the top.. Omars gotta go
What kind of strategy is “go with the little people.” Now we are going to go 180 from Latin American ball players to midgets?
Hey, wait a minute. Eddie Gaedel has the highest OBP in major league history.
Finally some good news.
Cant wait to buy a lance broadway fathead
zing
Worst investment by the Wilpons since they picked up the phone to call Madoff.
That could explain alot; but it also raises the same question – why wasn’t this dealt with earlier? Ollie was on the D/L earlier this year for the exact same reason. Why did they allow him to continue?
Exactly, it should have been dealt with then, i think its another case of shutting down players from being low in the standings. Wright is probably the only player returning, i have heard that he is working out with the cyclones and doing great.
They followed the normal treatment procedures for the injury. Surgery is only suggested if rest doesn’t take care of the problem.
Why not bring up Stoner?
can we vote for Dr. Altchek as Mets MVP?
I don’t mean to sound like a jerk but IMO this injury to Oliver Perez was his own doing. IMO this is a direct result of him being lazy during the WBC coming back to Spring Training out of shape and then rushing to get in shape for the regular season, thus injuring himself.
Hopefully he is able to recover from this and have a bounceback 2010. Most important is that he puts in the work to rehab from surgery so that he is ready to go come Spring Training. Maybe that will put him in better shape come Spring Training than he was heading into this season.
“You know Frenchy may not have the biggest bat, or murphy might not have the best glove/bat/mechanics, and wright may have to much weight on his shoulders but without them we may be worse then the Nationals.”
I think we are worse then the nationals. It wouldn’t surprise me if we finish as little as 5 games ahead of them in the end.
Mathemtically, finishing worse than the Nats is still feasible.
dont get my hopes up like that. I’ll be having dreams of bryce harper
Very much so…and we play them 6 times i believe and i bet their goal is to not finish last. They have been playing better then us and with us being defeated and with no help in site we are dead in the water…the nats smell blood!
Let em catch us…I’ll take the #1 pick.
Pelfrey is our ACE…think about it.
we are worse than the nationals right now. They actually have young players with potential playing for them, while we have AAAA players and veteran re-treads. (i’ll give murph, franc, krod, pelf a brake)
Mets vs. Nats isn’t even close right now. Dunn has more homers than Mets entire lineup, even with Wright in it. Add in Zimmerman and Willingham and the Nats look like 27 Yankees compared to Mets
At this point I hope we do finish last as we would get a higher draft pick.
It could be worse folks… It could be LIMA TIME!
I think we have to lose a few more starting rotations before that happens.
Hey, good to see that Pelfrey has finally become the ace we knew he’d be.
Hey now, don’t jump the gun. I hear Maine is going to try another game of long toss this week. MLB or BUST!
I should update the DLineup, but Perez’s head is such a mess that I’m not sure he makes the team. After all, he’s definitely behind Santana & Maine, and you could argue that he’s the #5 behind Niese & Nieve too…and that’s before tonite’s game (and whatever disaster it brings).
yeah might as well do a weekly update…too many changes to make daily.
if i had enough money, i’d build a hospital right next to CitiField
i’d be rich!
How long before i come on here and read the head line “KRod out for season after arm falls off”
Please shut him down…i’m just not in the mood.
You gotta believe…
You gotta be kidding me…is more like it.
fortunately we generally need to have a lead to see frankie
That rotation puts the spotlight on guys like Stokes and Feliciano as the next to go down.
Seriously, they have to start looking at the Russ Ortiz’s of the world just to finish out the season with some guys who can eat up some innings. Releasing Livan actually looks foolish.
Hernandez was let go because his contract called for him to make an extra I think $500k if he pitched a certain number of games.
That to me is a far bigger problem than Oliver Perez, Billy Wagner, Humpty Dumpty or the Tooth Fairy.
That the Mets HAD to be thining Santana might be shut down, that Parnell in the rotation might be awful, that Perez might go down, and they still wanted to save $500K is just not a good sign.
Livan’s bonuses are hard to figure
http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/washington-nationals_01.html
$0.1M each for 130, 140 IP
$0.15M each for 150, 160, 170 IP
2 points for start, 1.5 points for appearance of 2 or more innings, 1 point for appearance of less than 2 innings:
$25,000 each for 5, 10 points
$50,000 each for 15, 20, 25, 30 points
$0.1M for 35 points
But as he got up towards 130 IP he was set to make some of these more significant bonuses. In a vacuum he wasn’t worth keeping, but now they could use him. Russ Ortiz is out there, and should only cost around 70k or so… doubt we see it though.
Feliciano is actually 9th on he Mets in games played, and he’s catching up to Cora. They seemed set on getting him 90+ appearances this year even when the season went in the crapper. I’d like to see him work less, but it would be nice to know he is capable of being that kind or pitcher for 2010 as well.
Well at least in this case the production wont drop off…
this pitching staff has 1 legit starter, 4 short relievers, 6 long men, and whatever you want to call Parnell…
Livan Hernandez had graduating small bonuses for 130 IP and every 10 IP after that.
Every 5 starts was making him an extra 200k or so. That’s really pinching the dollars there, wow…
VCarter and Lorenzo, you two seriously need to stop posting the same stuff over and over. You are making it hard to find the posts that are actually worth reading…
You say that after you posted literally 4 things in a row lol..
Ya Gotta Bereave!!!
