I did a 30 second google search on the 40 man roster. I’m not keeping tabs on the amount of Latino players because for me I dont care if you’re white, black, yellow, purple, or orange I just want the best 25 players on my team to win a Championship. I remember in 2005 Mike Francessa and Mad Dog Russo questioned Omar multiple times about the amount of Latino players he was bringing in so dont think this topic is just being brought up by fans on this site.

P.S. Just for grins I went and looked at the Mets 40 man roster. I count 17 players with Latin names out of the 40 that are still on the roster – and I’m counting guys like Nelson Figueroa (who was born in the US) and Arturo Lopez and Wilson Valdez, who will probably be gone come Oct 5th.

My bad on Sabathia. As for A-Rod (or Manny Ramierez for that matter) he was born in the US but is of Latin American origin.

Lorenzo, the fact that you are keeping tabs on the number of Latino players on the Mets is pretty indicative of your state of mind on the subject. Omar traded Endy Chavez (along with Heilman and Smith) for a whole slew of white ballplayers last offseason. He released Livan Hernandez and Jorge Sosa when they weren’t performing. The face of the Mets right now is one of the whitest white boys around (aka David Wright).

The fact is that there has been a large influx of Latin American players into baseball in general over the past 10-15 years (as well as Asian players). Major league organizations have realized the potential in these regions of the world and have begun to set up training camps in these locations. Latin American is a prime area because a camp can be set up cheaply, and the warm weather climate will allow baseball to be played all year round.

Whether Omar is the GM or not, Latin American players will always be a large percentage of a professional baseball team – especially those on the coasts.

Anyway The Wilpons and Omar are huge supporters of the WBC so yell at them not me.

If it was up to me I would get rid of the WBC because it is pointless and nothing good could come out of it.

The WBC exacerbated injury risks and facilitated the actual injuries. I think that’s pretty clear with players like Santana.

The fact that Delgado already was old with a chronic hip injury was all the more reason to prevent him from playing.
