News: Yankees postpone Carter going to Mets from Sox

By Matthew Cerrone on Aug 27, 2009, 10:16 pm

Last week, the Boston Globe reported Red Sox 1B-OF prospect Chris Carter would be one of the two player’s to be named later in the swap with the Mets for Billy Wagner.

Tonight, the Globe’s Amalie Benjamin said on Twitter that the Yankees claimed Carter on waivers, blocking him from being immediately traded to the Mets.

Benjamin later explained that the Sox, obviously, pulled Carter back, meaning he will not be traded to the Mets until the off season.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes the Yankees likely claimed Carter, knowing the Sox would pull him back, which will force Boston to keep on their 40–man roster through September.

…typical… thanks, cashman… i mean, the Mets will still get carter… it’s just, he could have been on the team in September, in Citi Field, allowing us and the Mets time to see what he’s about in advance of a busy off season… now, he’ll just sit idle, occupying a roster spot in Boston…

Carter is batting .279 with 14 HR and 59 RBI this season for Triple-A Pawtucket.

As I said earlier, this is a bush league maneuver by the Yankees which accomplished nothing where the Red Sox are concerned. They already released Penny to make room for Wagner. All it does is prevent the Mets from suing the remaining 5 weeks of the season to get a look at this guy.

One also wonders how and why Carter’s identity as the PTBNL was leaked. If it weren’t, they may have let him pass. The Mets should consider filing some sort of grievance – it’s clear Carter’s identity should not have been revealed until the deal was free and clear.

I’m really annoyed – we have no prospects of our own to look at – I was at least looking forward to seeing this guy.

    I hate the Yankees.

Great. Another reason to despise the Yankees. With little else motivating me at this point in the baseball season I see another reason to root for the Yanks to go down. But what if it’s the Yanks and the Phils in the Series? Yikes.

BTW, the Red Sox currently only have 38 players on their 40 man roster. The 39th spot is for Dice-K who is on the 60 day DL. It’s a move that hurts the Mets more than it hurts the Sox.

This guy is barely a prospect… mets are really showing their true selves by saving money at the expense of talent they got back from Wags.

Carter has had all of 1 AB since the 19th, so not only will he have to occupy a Red Sox roster spot, but they have no reason to play him when they have prospects of their own to play. Might as well send him home until March.
    Thanks a bunch Yanks…

good point about his identity being revealed too soon Dave. Then again, the Sox could have leaked Carter’s name, while having another trade in mind in which Carter would actually be the guy traded. Can’t really blame the Yanks too much as Carter would be an improvement over Shelley Duncan as back a up OF.
But it would have been nice if they hadn’t messed in our business.

Bob Ojeda chopped off his finger tip trimming the hedges. Carter’s not playing assures nothing when it comes to injury.

Blame whoever leaked Carter’s name. There’s a reason these things are supposed to stay under wraps until they’re done.

Ha. I actually backed off my disliking of the Yankees the past few years. Funny how this sparked it right back up.

I see what you did there. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Genius! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

You, sir, are the funniest man alive.

      BTW, Cashman’s job is to make a move that has no affect on the Red Sox OR the Yankees, yet only hurts the Mets? -_-;

This won’t affect the Sox in anyway as they’re only carrying 38 players on their 40 man roster and the trade will still go through. Anyway, if he did this because he’s worried about the Red Sox, he worrying about the wrong team. He should be worried about the Rangers. The other team fighting for the WC who just came in and beat his team 2 out of 3.

Guys listen… Cashman is just doing his job. He is competing against the Red Sox not the Yankees. Becuase of this very good move by Cashman the Red Sox were forced to cut someone off of their roster which turned out to be Brad Penny.. This was a great strategic baseball move (Hate to admit it cause its the Yankees).

Why should the Yankees care about us when we are 18 games out of first place???
