Mid Game: David Wright’s Helmet

By Matthew Cerrone on Sep 01, 2009, 10:00 pm

I’m all for David Wright doing whatever is necessary to protect his noggin, but, dude, I’m sorry, Jeff Francoeur was right, that helmet is the silliest looking thing I have ever seen.  Tonight on Twitter, so far, he has been described most often as looking like the Great Gazoo from the Flinstones and Dark Helmet from Spaceballs.

Mike Meech of the Phillies blog, The Fightins, writes to Twitter, “I can’t wait to see it from Google Earth.”

Even if your right, get used to it. It will be mandatory for the minor leagues next year. Next step mandatory for the MLB. Good or bad?

So after the game, does David go back to the hotel on the short bus?

Gotta hand it to the Philthy blogger on that one. It was good.

But unfortunately for you, Philthy Blogger, Evil will always win because good is dumb.

Who cares how stupid it looks, it will save serious injures.

People made fun of auto seat belts when they first came out. They have saved unbtold numbers of lives. So let the helmets look dorky; the tradeoff is a no brainer.

Having said that, the Google earth line was hilarious.

That is pretty funny, but really, as long as it protects him, cool by me.

Although Philly fans should calm down. Maybe they should start wearing them to games, then fans wont be killing each other in post-game brawls.

Kudos to David. He sets a great example for young kids on how to play the game the right way, and now showing how to protect yourself while doing it.

And, FYI– from the CF camera it didn’t look half bad. I think they will improve on it and make it look better in the near future.

Yeah I’m guessing it didn’t look too bad from the upper deck either. Unfortunately, sometimes cameras do something called “close-ups” haha

Matt, I’m glad you’re more concerned about what David Wright looks like rather than his health. I guess if you had this blog when John Olerud had a brain aneurysm, you would have chastised him for wearing a helmet in the field.

he looks like a little leaguer wearing too big of a helmet, but hey if it protects you do it i guess. I still find it hard to believe they cant figure out a smaller safer version. Football has made huge strides in their helmet protective abilities over the past 20-30 years without giving up much in the size department, other than those ridiculous helmet bubbles that dude on the Bills always used to wear.

I forgot about that, god that thing is hideous, It looks like the helmets that come with childrens halloween costumes. Why is it a Bills helmet? What is it with the Bills and wearing ridiculous oversized helmets.

As much as I hate to say it, the posts on TheFightins.com were friggin’ hilarious, as is that ridiculous helmet. We really do find new ways to embarrass ourselves don’t we?

Thank god David has a sense of humor. Hopefully he’ll diffuse the whole situation by laughing it off.
