The Mets lost to the Rockies by the score of 8 to 3 in Coors Field last night.

The Least You Should Know:
Mike Pelfrey gave up seven runs and six hits, including two home runs, in just four innings, while walking five of the 23 batters he faced.
The Mets scored two runs in the first, had the chance to score more and, of course, didn’t, after which they made Jorge De La Rosa look like Greg Maddux, as he worked off the plate the rest of the night.
Misc., Etc. and Other Stuff:
Mike Pelfrey has made 75 career starts, and, at a time when I hope to see him learning, adjusting and maturing, he looks like a total mess. What’s with all the fidgeting, the hand-licking, the stretching, and angry look on his face, the frustration, the head-wiping, etc., mentally he seems totally lost – even forgetting to back up home and third base during key plays while he was on the mound. Focus, man. Physically, he’s no better, seemingly incapable of adjusting to and fighting through rough at bats, especially when pitching from the stretch, and especially when pitching the second time through the lineup. He just seems unsettled, uncomfortable, and it looks like he doesn’t trust himself.
There is no denying Angel Pagan’s raw talent, but, again, he made a base running mistake, showing why so many people seem to question his baseball instincts, and why I can’t commit to him having a larger role on this team next season. Last night, he led off the game with a single, then got fooled by Troy Tulowitzki while trying to steal second, who made Pagan think Luis Castillo’s hit was a ground ball when it was actually a line drive to center – Pagan panicked, tried to go back to first from second and was tagged out. Leadoff single, not so much.
David Wright looked goofy in that new helmet, I will not lie. But, whatever needs to happen to protect his noggin, I’m all for it – he’s just going to have to understand he’ll get goofed on a bit. It’s just impossible not to. That said, Wright performed well tonight, though he did look quite exhausted at the end of the game, sitting back, arms stretched out, in the dugout late in the game. I’m not a doctor, obviously, but I can’t help and think of the impact Colorado’s thin air had on Ryan Church last season, when he was struggling to recover from a concussion.
Lance Broadway might be a good reliever, if he can learn to command that change-up and splitter better… he fools hitters, but then he grooves a fastball and it becomes batting practice.
Speaking of the thin air, I think it makes SNY’s Keith Hernandez a bit loopy, as he is particularly entertaining and interesting when doing games in Colorado.
What’s Next for the Mets:
The Mets continue their three-game series with the Rockies on Wednesday at 8:40 pm, with Tim Redding taking on Ubaldo Jimenez.
