Note: Beltran Waiting, Ready For Mets

Yesterday in Brooklyn, Carlos Beltran batted second for the Cyclones and went 1 for 5 with a run scored as the Cyclones lost their season finale to the Lowell Spinners by the score of 4-2.

After the game, Beltran declared himself 100 percent and said “I’m good to go.”

He also offered words of caution, telling Laura Albanese of Newsday:

“…It’s been two months and a half out. I don’t expect to be great out there. It’s going to take time.”

Although there has been no official word as to when Beltran might be activated, he is hoping that he returns to action tomorrow against the Marlins at Citi Field.

I just read in the NYT that the Mets don’t expect Sheffield yo play again this season. I sure am glad that Omar didn’t trade him to the Giants. Where would we be if we hadn’t hung on to Sheff?

I get what you’re saying, but from what I’ve read the Giants had no interest in Sheff and was just trying to block him from going elsewhere….their offer reflected this mindset. Given that the Mets owe Sheff virtually nothing in salary, it was decided it would be worth more to hold on to him in the interest of putting a more competitive team out on the field.

I love getting on Omar as much as the next guy…….but I couldn’t care less about this one.

If the Giants were only blocking him, then keeping him makes sense. It wasn’t worth letting Sheff go for money, since he’s not making any. I had thought the Giants offered a player (not a great one, mind you).

This site is so great for hindsight nit-picking…

you are so right. Sometimes its down right silly.

I do as much prognosticating as I do analysis. If you don’t look back at the moves people have made or not made, how do you judge their body of work?

But to complain about not trading Sheffield is just plain crazy. It’s like you’re looking for something to complain about now. What would we get for him? Surely nothing worthwhile. I’m willing to bet we got more in return for Wagner than we would have gotten for Sheffield, and people are crying about that trade everywhere.

Matt, you seriously need to bring back the old slogan: “One team, one million GMs”

So many people on here think they could do better…it’s laughable.

Thank heavens above, Carlos is back!
Watching Pagan play center like he’s being chased by a bee is wearing me down!
Is Angel hearing impaired?

I wonder if Beltran and Maine are pushing to come back to show Jose what a puss he is.

steadyeddie September 7, 2009 at 11:22 am

Yes they are.
And yes he is.
He will look nice in red sox sitting on their bench next season.
Hey, how is you kid, Sun?
And your cousin, Shoe?

Jose won’t be going anywhere until he proves he’s healthy – and even then it would have to be for a tremendous package that would include a major-league ready SS.

While I am disappointed with Jose’s inability to come back from the DL this season (and whether it was more mental than physical), I think people are forgetting what a difference maker he can be on the basepaths. His talent is hard to come by.

steadyeddie September 7, 2009 at 1:20 pm

yes sir, Mr X
BUT ya gotta be playin’
to make that difference!
If.
Could.
What if?
Ya want a guy who plays and steals 25 bases.
Or a guy that’s always “hurt” who could have stole 50?

Did you forget that reyes played 150+ games from 2005-2008? I think you also forgot that unlike someone like Shef, Reyes is sort of useless with a leg injury, so its a lot more difficult for him to play thru it.

No one offers self-disclaimers like Carlos! Still, it will be great to see him back on the field.
