In a post to Amazin Avenue, James Kannenengieser gives a quick review of Friday’s game-used equipment auction in Citi Field.
…seriously, someone purchased an Ambiorix Burgos game-used jersey…

Aaron Yorke of the Daily Stache wonders who Mets fans will root for if the Yankees play the Phillies in the World Series.
…i have no idea, aaron… for me, if i root for the Yankees, i’ll have to punch myself in the face… but, if i root for the Phillies, my wife will punch me in the face… tough call… hopefully, we never need to find out…
According to Hot Foot, Mets pitchers can hit.

…i watch the Mets because i’m a Mets fan… i appreciate the effort, anthony, but i’m not sure i need any more of a reason than that…

Matt – couldn’t agree with you more. We watch the Mets whether they are good or bad. It’s our team, til death does us part. And folks, this isn’t even close to the low point.
The early days everyone knows about, but from 1977-1983 (my teen years) we were the worst team in baseball and a joke. 1993 was a joke.
In fact, this decade has been the MOST successful in Met history in terms of wins (but clearly not overall with no championships). What HAS changed is our expectations.
We now expect every year to be a top team (and should given our payroll). Trust me, this is a lot better to follow and root for then M. Donald Grant breaking your heart by trading away Seaver.
Wins by Decade:
1970s: 763
1980s: 775
1990s: 767 (fewer games with strike)
2000s: 807 (and counting)
To be fair the down years have helped fuel the championship runs of those earlier decades. Without the early 80′s its unlikely Doc and Straw are even Mets… That natural cycle is what keeps a healthy balance between building winners and rebuilding the farm.
The Mets did a great job of bouncing back to rebuild from 2001 to 2006, but clearly its trashed the farm to do it so quickly and with free agents.
In many respects those down years are much better for an organization than finishing in second place all the time…
Agreed, although having a 1-5 pick is no guarantee of success and lots of great players are taken much later.
It was really nice to see Parnell and Pelfrey pitch so well. Its so much more rewarding when the Mets win those games. When they win behind Redding or Figueroa it just seems hollow.
The Mets did cost themselves a chance to move into a tie for 5th, but its still really bunched up from 5 to 11… Reds and Jays swapped spots.

When the YANKEES played the BRAVES who did you root for? I was pushing for the YANKEES. I am used to the YANKEES and the BS fans giving me crap. I dont want to hear anymore from the PHILLIES if they repeat.
Back then the Yankees were palatable to root for because they hadn’t become the pompous, arrogant, entitled jerks that they are today. And their fans weren’t mostly bandwagon hopping morons who know little about the game.
Hard to envision that now…
