The Least You Should Know:
Mike Pelfrey got absolutely shelled once again today, allowing eight earned runs and ten hits in six innings, and he blew an early 4-0 Met lead and put the Mets in an 8-4 hole.
However, David Wright finally had a breakout game, hitting two home runs and driving in six to rally the Mets to victory – a two run home run in the eighth inning that brought the Mets within two and another two run home run in the ninth that gave the Mets their tenth and final run of the day.
The Mets pounded out 15 hits against the Phillies today, and scored five runs in two innings against their bullpen.
Other Observations and Notes:
Wright’s home runs marked the second time a Met has hit a home run in the eighth and ninth inning of a game – the last coming from John Olerud on June 29, 1997 in Pittsburgh.
Up Next:
The Mets play a day/night doubleheader tomorrow against the Phillies beginning at 1:05 pm when Tim Redding faces Kyle Kendrick, and John Maine faces Pedro Martinez in the night cap at 8:05 pm.
The Met (62-79) continue their three-game series with the Phillies (80-59) today at 4 pm in Citizen’s Bank Park.
Jamie Moyer (12-9, 4.98 ERA) will start for the Phillies, as he fills in for injured rookie J.A. Happ. Moyer is 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in two starts against the Mets this season. David Wright is a .432 lifetime hitter with three home runs against Moyer.
Mike Pelfrey (10-10, 4.83 ERA) will start for the Mets. Pelfrey is 3-0 with a 3.70 ERA in four starts against the Phillies this season. In his last start, he gave up just one run and five hits through a a season-high eight innings against the Cubs.
Luis Castillo will hit leadoff today, followed in order by Fernando Tatis in left field, Wright, Carlos Beltran back in center, Jeff Francoeur, Omir Santos behind the plate, Daniel Murphy at first, Wilson Valdez and Pelfrey.
Tagged News |Coming into today, the Mets are 19 games behind the Phillies in the National League East, and 19.5 games behind the Rockies for the Wild Card.
There are 20 games left in the season.
…not that we haven’t already done so, but despite the day to day frustrations with each game, it’s important to simply look forward at this point…I am hopeful of a positive off-season and that not just needs are addressed but every position is looked at for a potential upgrade…

Prior to yesterday’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Bobby Parnell is not guaranteed to stay in the rotation for the remainder of the season.
Manuel told reporters:
“I have to see and know where he is individually and mentally, if we feel it is somewhat productive to keep giving him an opportunity.”
…personally, i feel bad for Parnell…but at the same time the team needs to explore other viable options for next season, and Bobby hasn’t shown that he can consistently get Major League hitters out as a starter…
…i do think that a return to the bullpen in the setup role is where he should be…he was effective early in the year and i think that he is very talented and with a little more seasoning, he can be a valuable commodity for the Mets…

In the month of September, Brian Schneider has made just two starts and has just six at bats.
Schneider recognizes that he will not be brought back in 2010, telling Adam Rubin of the Daily News:
“I won’t be back…I’m okay with that. I’ll easily get a job next year. I’m not worried about it. I’ll get a job and just move on. Guys do that. I’m not going to retire. No way..It is what it is. There’s nothing I can do…There’s nothing I can say. I’m giving time up to a guy who has never played in the big leagues before and I’m okay with that. He’s a good kid. I’m glad he’s getting a chance to play.”
…at the time he was acquired, i was on board with the move considering the team had lacked a solid defensive backstop for a long time, but i have to believe the injuries took their toll on Schneider…his performance behind the plate was disappointing overall, and i think we all expected a compromise offensively…
Schneider has hit just .195 with three home runs and 24 RBI in just 51 games this season,
For more on Schneider, take a look at Rubin’s article.
Since returning from the disabled list, David Wright is just 7 for 35, and his average has dropped nine points from .324 to .315 since September 1.
Wright has just one extra base hit and five RBI, and has struck out 12 times over that span.
…its hard to determine what is actually the cause of the slump, but i’d have to figure that its a combination of rust and the result of being hit by a 95 mph fastball in the head…not to mention the fact that he has been as streaky as a hitter can get this season…
…it has most certainly been a strange season for Wright…i have heard a lot of people say it has been a “bad” season for him, but it is hard for me to say that simply because he has hit, just not for power…
