The New York Times and Daily News both report the Mets will not re-hire Ramon Pena, a special assistant to GM Omar Minaya.

Pena is in charge of international scouting,

According to the Times, “The departure of Pena is expected to be part of a larger shakeup in scouting and player development.”

The Daily News also says vice president of scouting Sandy Johnson intends to retire; while minor-league field coordinator Luis Aguayo has been fired.

be sure to read rubin’s report to better understand the sudden shift in minor-league scouting personnel…

…last month, someone close to the team told me the Mets know they must make fundamental changes their minor-league and draft strategy… perhaps this is the first step… i hope this means a return to selecting players out of college, protecting their top picks and drafting over slot in the early rounds…

It is a step in the right direction, but the fact that Omar is still running the show is very disconcerting.

Matt,

I disagree on the logic of going above-slot in the early rounds. If a team’s draft budget is $4M, why spend half of that on one player. I think that the Pirates draft strategy this year is the wave of the future.

They took a guy at slot in the first round, but then took the save money and went above slot in rounds 5-10 where one can really find a lot of value.

The result is that the Pirates were able to land 7-8 very good prospect instead one great prospect and some so-so prospects.

Well said. However, I’d like to think the Mets don’t have to model their draft strategy after a micro-market team like the Pirates.

I am not sure.

I feel like the best approach for the draft is to draft the best guys on the table while addresses the clubs needs. Slot or not. But we all know it takes an above slot offer to land a great first rounder vs a good one.
