Note: Jerry Manuel and His Coaches

Update, 11:15 am:

The Brewers are considering whether to hire Rick Peterson to be their pitching coach, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Original Post:

This weekend, Jerry Manuel told reporters he expects to meet with GM Omar Minaya and ownership the day after the season ends to discuss his coaching staff.

According to MLB.com, “There have been indications that batting coach Howard Johnson and pitching coach Dan Warthen will be retained.  There have been no such indications involving third-base coach Razor Shines.”

actually, i still do not believe it is 100 percent certain that manuel will be back… from what i recall, the team’s coaching staff will be up for new contracts at the end of this season… i bet Howard Johnson is back next season, since the team is among the best in baseball in batting average, OBP, batting average with runners in scoring position, doubles and triples – not to mention i hear players enjoy working with him, especially Jeff Francoeur… the jury is still out on pitching coach Dan Warthen… however, i bet Razor Shines will be replaced, as will others…

…the thing is, manuel should not be a guarantee to return… i hope minaya and his staff take a long-hard look at the quality of play, not only by the last man on the roster, but by the team’s veterans… i mean, it was a sloppy season, to say the least… there were countless dropped pop ups, poor throws, miscues on the base paths, some lacked hustle, and there was a constant issue with poor focus

In case you missed it, on Saturday, David Wright apologized to his teammates for making two baserunning mistakes that cost his team a run, first he forgot their were two outs and did not run on contact during a double by Francoeur; then, a few moments later, jogged from third across home plate, but not before Francoeur was tagged out at second to end the inning before Wright scored.

As such, in a post to NY Baseball Digest, Mike Silva explains why now is the time to fire Manuel, writing:

“(Wright’s mistake) was a perfect example of what is wrong with this team… Maybe it’s unfair to fire Jerry after the injuries this season.  Before the DL engulfed the team he had them on a 97–win pace.  Last year they played about .600 ball after he took over… Someone needs to take the fall for this teams embarrassing play.  Firing Jerry Manuel almost becomes a necessity.”

i am far less concerned about who is to blame, who will take the fall, etc., and more concerned with who is the best person to lead this team next season… if the Mets intend to play a more fundamental-style of baseball, less-power and more speed, taking the extra base, etc., they need a smart, Xs-and-Os manager who can look ahead, think on his feet, and make adjustments…

…if Jerry Manuel is that man, great, keep him… if he isn’t, then the Mets need to find someone who is

JERRY IS NOT THE ANSWER HERE. COME ON MAN. WE ALL KNOW THIS AND HAVE KNOWN IT FOR SOME TIME NOW. HE’S NOT A GOOD STRATEGIST. TIME TO GO!!!!!

PLEASE BRING IN BOBBY V. THE FANS WOULD BE ECSTATIC. IF NOT HIM THEN MAYBE BUCK SHOWALTER. JERRY WILL ONLY COST US 3 OR 4 MORE GAMES NEXT YEAR AND AS WE CAN SEE WE CANT AFFORD TO LOSE 3 OR 4 MORE GAMES IN ANY SEASON.

There are indications that Dan Warthen will be retained? Are you kidding me? I guess as he didn’t take his shirt off and challenge the bullpen staff to a fight, he’s still considered a good manager.

Sheez, did Bernie Maddoff abscond with the Wilpons balls as well?

Coolpapabell September 28, 2009 at 11:52 am

Great use of the word Abscond.

The first time I have ever seen it used with cojones in the same sentence.

mextache September 28, 2009 at 11:35 am

How Warthen can be retained with the Mets staff leading the league in walks is beyond me.

So is the notion that both Omar and Jerry will be leading this team in 2010.

THEY ALL NEED TO GO!

ARTIE412 September 28, 2009 at 3:01 pm

I agree on Warthen. He should go. Might he have a BIT of the blame, along with our training and medical staff, for the health of Maine, Niese, Nieve, Santana and Putz?

A healthy Maine and Putz alone might have made the difference of maybe a dozen wins.

And Pelfrey is still young, but he performance this year might have been helped with stronger coaching.

Its disgusting what a misrepresentation of the play this is. Did you even see the play?

Wright did not forget there were two outs. The ball Francouer hit was ripped right at David. He did not react well to the play, b/c the ball was hit right at him, not b/c he thought there were two outs. 2nd, Francouer did not get a double. He was out by 10-15 feet at 2nd base, a bad base running play on his part too. Yes, Wright did loaf it going home, but that’s the only part of the play you got right.

Terrible reporting on display here.

wlaadair September 28, 2009 at 12:08 pm

Exactly true, David got a bad read off the bat and the ball was hit right in his path, if he had let the ball hit him, he would have been out for interference, Shines didn’t give him any sense of hustle being needed and Wright has been dealing with leg injuries all season.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 28, 2009 at 11:36 am

we lead the major leagues in walks, and have a laughable amount of walks with the bases loaded. pelfrey has regressed, and we are keeping warthen? un-******-believable.

starz31 September 28, 2009 at 12:19 pm

agreed

Coolpapabell September 28, 2009 at 11:53 am

Reasing Warthen to AAA and bring in Dave Duncan right away.

Super King September 28, 2009 at 12:00 pm

Dave Duncan.

That is all

mextache September 28, 2009 at 12:00 pm

I’d love to know what team the Wilpons have been watching this season…because it sure ain’t this one. They’re clueless.

If all the coaches’ contracts are up then this is not a money decision to return them. It has to be based on job evaluation.

If they’re going to run this team like a minor league club then they should charge minor league prices at their palace in Flushing.

2009_believe September 28, 2009 at 12:03 pm

Warthen needs to go because he built a pitching staff of little nancy-boys (with the exception of santana of course) who are too afraid to throw strikes to people and end up walking them instead of strapping on a pair and challenging the hitters. There is no reason to give free passes especially in close games, why put a guy on base? Make them beat you don’t beat yourself.

I think he has to be the first to go if the organization is serious about winning

2009_believe September 28, 2009 at 12:24 pm

I also think that we shouldn’t go off the deep end yet. I am very curious about what the off-season holds and i have some faith (hope?) that there are going to be changes made.

realmet September 28, 2009 at 12:06 pm

Seems we have spoken here. No changes = no tickets purchased for 2010 by your most die hard fans. Hope the Wilpons have fun at the empty Cit Field in 2010 because they are showing us fans nothing.

They are showing that they have no clue what they’re doing and that they don’t care about their fans. They will see this time. I think we’re really all at a point of done with this team.

When I say done, I don’t mean we won’t be fans anymore because we always will, but we’re done spending thousands of dollars on a bad product with inept ownership.

starz31 September 28, 2009 at 12:25 pm

I dont know anymore. I dont think Jerry is the right man for the future. If thats the case, then we should explore all opportunities…but there are a few problems…1)we have to make sure that who we bring in is better than what we have right now., never a gurantee there 2) extending from that, we’d be paying Jerry either in 2010 (either in the dugout or to stay at home)…so again, you have to make sure its worth it and 3) your 2009 motif, does it fit the overall future and path of our team and franchise?

djshakes2 September 28, 2009 at 12:31 pm

Pretty much what everybody else said. There is no reasonable explanation possible for keeping Warthen. Shines has to go or at least put somewhere where he can’t do so much damage. I never thought I would say this but we need a Larry Bowa type at 3rd base.

I would strongly prefer Peterson back over Warthen but that is off the table obviously. I wonder how he feels knowing that his Tuscan Tile was replaced by linoleum.

starz31 September 28, 2009 at 12:32 pm

I dont really like Omar anymore, but i think he gets one more year to figure it out. This is HIS team that he has created over his tenure with us, so I’ll give me this off-season to try and fix his own problems. He created a solid team on paper prior to 2009, so ill give him this off-season to actually tweek and field a good team for 2010.

Other than the Cora-signing, he hasn’t done well creating depth on our roster. Granted, our core players never missed any significant time in the past 4 years, so thats tough to plan for. But he had chances to at least keep us alive (or try to) when were struggling in may-June before it all caved in. (now its easy to speculate that, Im not saying Derosa or others would had or had not panned out for us, but we didnt bring ANYone in to help keep the team afloat, except for a swap of RFers)

jimyager September 28, 2009 at 12:44 pm

1986 POEPLE that is the last time we won anything!! Do whatever it takes to win in 2010!! The Yankees seem to win every year and they are the biggest FA buyers of all time. What are they doing that METS are not? We play in the same big city market as the Yankees and for us to lose year after year is a disgrace. WIN WIN WIN and WIN NOW!!! I am sick of being happy with second place and always looking ahead to the future, like I said since 1986, when does the future arrive? After 2006, 2007, 2008 and now 2009 plus a new stadium, its time to play baseball to win.

2009_believe September 28, 2009 at 1:11 pm

i must agree with this post, i want to win now, and i want to win in 2011 and i want the FO to do the best they can possibly do for us to win

starz31 September 28, 2009 at 1:36 pm

I miss the pressure and intensity I felt everyday in the Fall of 2006. That playoff feeling takes over your body all day long, I cant describe it. Never would have thought back then, that 2007, 2008, and 2009 would pass without that same feeling.

jimyager September 28, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Yes it was awsome!! I live up in Vermont, RED SOX COUNTRY and my wife and I always wear our METS jackets. I took my daughter to the dentist and when we walked in the lady behind the desk started to ask us questions about the METS and talk with us about the team and what we thought. I got that same reaton everyplace I went and I miss that feeling. Lets do whatever it takes to get it back again!!!

thedude September 28, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Same as everyone else. Pretty much blown away by the idea they’d even consider bringing Warthen back.

Hitting coaches are useless, so who cares? But Warthen is an absolute joke.

Also, the mets are 13th in baseball in OBP, hardly “among the best in baseball.”

Agee's Catch September 28, 2009 at 2:01 pm

if the Mets intend to play a more fundamental-style of baseball, less-power and more speed, taking the extra base, etc., they need a smart, Xs-and-Os manager who can look ahead, think on his feet, and make adjustments…

Didn’t you just describe Bobby Valentine?

I do not like to see coaches get the axe. Fire the manager, and let the new manager hire his own staff. The chef should be able to choose his own ingredients. If the soup sucks, get rid of the cook too.

mextache September 28, 2009 at 2:26 pm

I agree. Minaya and Manuel are going to pin their own ineffectiveness, inability to do a job and mismanagement of this team on the coaching staff.

And the fans aren’t supposed to see through this sham?

sofla1225 September 28, 2009 at 2:16 pm

Living down in florida you watch how a small market team works. The Marlins dont have the money of a big market team but what they have and what the Mets need are copetent baseball people running the organization. Larry Beinfest and his team always seem to find untapped talent from other organizations. Fred wilpon needs to find the right person to run this team and rebuild it from the top to the bottom. It seems to me that since Beltran struckout at the end of game 7 we have been in a downward spiral. As much as losing in 2007 and 2008 hurt this year was worse. 2009 was worse because we were never in it and it became pretty painful watching them night in and night out.

metsfan1 September 28, 2009 at 9:39 pm

It is time that the Mets retool. That includes players, coaches and ALL front office personnel. It amazes me that Minaya will be retained and that Manuel will be back. What have they done to deserve this. I know there has been a ton of injuries but since some of the players have come back, we still have been AWFUL. That is a reflection on the manager and coaches.

I saw an interview with Mark Cuban today. Man I wish he was our owner. The question posed was when do you feel that you need to be involved in organizational decisions and when do you feel that you can stand on the sidelines and let other people run the team. His answer was when I can trust the GM and Coach. He said the hardest thing to do is hire a coach and GM because it is like a first date. No one picks their nose on a first date. Everyone looks good. However when he totally trusts those hires he fades into the background to take care of running the business side of the team.

Can we as Mets fans trust Minaya or Manuel without ANY intervention? NO!! That to me says it is time to start over. Why are we going to bring back certain members of the front office and coaching staff when we all know they will be on red alert and if the team starts poorly next season, it will be just like when we fired Randolph or when we fired both Valentine and Phillips. Just start new from the day after the season so we can implement a new plan ASAP.
