The Mets lost to the Nationals by the score of 4-3 in Washington D.C. tonight.

The Least You Should Know:
Mike Pelfrey was handed a 3-0 lead, he retired the first seven batters he faced, but had to wiggle out of minor trouble in the third inning. Pelfrey ran into real trouble in the fifth inning when he allowed a two run home run to Ian Desmond and then Ryan Zimmerman singled in Willie Harris and Elijah Dukes to tie the game for the Nationals.
The Mets had a chance in the eighth inning when they loaded the bases with nobody out, but Brian Schneider popped up for the first out, and then Jeremy Reed lined into an inning ending double play.
Of course the Mets paid for their inefficiencies at the plate in the bottom of the eighth, thanks to a comedy of errors by their middle infielders, starting with a poor flip by Anderson Hernandez to Luis Castillo on a routine double play ground ball, and ending with an air-mailed throw by Castillo to first base that scored Justin Maxwell for the go-ahead run.
Elijah Dukes made a spectacular catch to end the game for the Nationals on a missile hit by David Wright with Angel Pagan on with two outs.
Other Observations and Notes:
The Mets find very creative ways to lose games, but it always seems to come down to a lack of fundamentals…tonight being a prime example of that.
The Mets once again had a ton of base runners, but managed to end their own threats with poor situational hitting and bad luck.
I thought Anderson Hernandez was supposed to be a defensive oriented player – but the error on the routine double play in the eighth inning makes me wonder about his usefulness.
This was definitely one of Pelfrey’s better performances this year despite not earning the victory – he had good action on his sinker when he was pitching out of the windup, and outside of a rough fifth inning, mainly scattered hits before coming out of the game.
I am waiting for Pedro Feliciano to make a pitch, and have his arm fall off – this guy pitches every day and he has been splendid all year.
Up Next:
The Mets will end the road portion of their schedule tomorrow afternoon at 4:35 pm with the conclusion of their series against the Nationals, with Tim Redding facing John Lannan.

What a season….
Since Jun 1st this team is 39-70.
am I still supposed to like Castillo because of the wonderful year he is having (which consists soley of his OBP?)
what a mess he will be if that slips .40 or so points next year, and his range and D continues to decline.
Just think if tthey can move him as part of the general off season housecleaning, it wil lbe for the best.
That was just awful to watch…
The only “positive” from last night was that we were hitting FROZEN ROPES that found the Nationals’ gloves.
AND . . . did anyone notice that Wright was hanging in against the righty breaking balls, especially later in the game? It seems that he said “hell with THIS! I’m NOT going to hit from my heels.” Anyone who DVRd the game (and is masochist enough to actually SAVE it) can take a look and see his posture.
Other than that, yuch.
I’m done for the season analyzing what the Mets did wrong to lose games. Fundamentals in the field or base running. Poor pitching. Lethargic hitting. It’s the same thing almost every game. There’s no use any more in repeating it.
These things snowball and this season, it was extreme. Injuries exposed what most already knew was a weak farm system. The lack of hitters exposed fundamental errors that get covered up when the offense puts up numbers. Or were the fundamental errors caused by the players knowing the season is over? Lack of focus was an issue. Is it lazy players? Players being depended on to play every day when they’re not used to? AAA players playing in a Major League setting? Or is it the Phillies jerseys buried under the new field?
So many issues but they’re all connected.
But on the positive side, Keith is headed down to Florida for his 6 months of R & R.
Who can argue with you, KD? You’re right.
The one “out” that I do give us — and a show of the guts that some guys HAVE shown — is that we have had, as you said, “. . . Players being depended on to play every day when they’re not used to? AAA players playing in a Major League setting?”
To these points:
Cora – Most plate appearances since 2004
Murphy- Almost a technical rookie
Anderson Hernandez – 2009 plate appearances far exceeded total of his ML career
Pagan – 2009 plate appearances almost matched total of his ML career
Santos – A rookie
Tatis – Most pa’s since 2002
Thole – Rookie
These guys were mainstays in our lineup, and to my mind, did a great job TRYing to hold together an offense and defense that, to me, was given a real task by a pitching staff that just couldn’t hold back the other team.
Can anyone calulate what the total salaries of the above guys was for 2009?
I have not written on this blog for some time as i see many other people have not either. Please don’t blame it on the injuries as this team was not good before all the injuries hit.
1st inning bases loaded nobody out and no hits
8th inning same as above.
This team needs the following:
1B
2B
LF
3 Starting Pitcher (Maine and Perez can not be counted on)
2 Bullpen arms
a new bench (bring back Cora)
manager
bench coach
pitching coach
third base coach
first base coach
a minor league system
You forgot backstop.
First and formost, Mr YOung, It is my humble opinion, the FIRST thing this TEAM needs is a ownership with cash and passion!
NYC is BIG.
The Freddy and Jeff Show is small time potata’s
I’m going to the Bob Evans for lunch today. I’ll ask them if they’ve heard from Nick. Maybe he’s sequestered doing sausage research.
WOW, this is great, another COME FROM AHEAD LOSS!! And to the worst team in baseball. At this poni one could argue that the METS are the worst team?
i do agree that we had some bad luck there with line drives getting caught all over the place but with the bases loaded twice and nobody out twice we deserve to lose,
