News: Jose Reyes now has a Torn Hamstring

by Matthew Cerrone

Jose Reyes now has a torn right hamstring, which occurred while running the bases in New York earlier in the week, in addition to the torn tendon behind his right knee, the team told reporters following today’s game.

the team has not said whether he’ll have surgery, but, at this point, that seems inevitable

i feel badly for jose… i do… thanks to loud mouths on talk radio, i think some fans believe reyes is lazy, or doesn’t want to return from the disabled list… this is not the case, from what i can tell… instead, i understand from people connected to him and the team, he is simply paranoid and apprehensive for fear of making matters worse… i guess he had every right to worry, because, apparently, he tore the hamstring while testing it earlier in the week in New York…

next season is a huge deal for jose, since, if he misses time and struggles, there is a chance the Mets do not pick up his option, making him a free agent… his next contract is supposed to be when he signs his first mega deal on the open market, i.e., a five– or seven-year deal… so, now, instead of increasing his value, pushing him from a $10 million player to a $15 million player, he’ll be playing next season to prove he’s simply healthyand if he isn’t, who knows what his future will holdand so, i can totally understand him being nervous and unsettled, which i fear is being misinterpreted by some people as a lack of desire

Rock bottom.

roman411 September 30, 2009 at 8:27 pm

This has now become ludicrous. Reyes should have been TOLD to sit down a month ago…when the Mets essentially had no chance.

Other teams must be mocking us behind our backs.

2009_believe September 30, 2009 at 8:29 pm

maybe people will stop saying that he ‘didn’t want to come back” now and hopefully they just get him the surgery fix it all and move on

Matt, you spoiled us with the head-banging animated thing – we need one for the Reyes news… Did you hear Keith in the 9th when Gary asked what to do? Keith said, “I quit.” Funny stuff.

So what started out as a cramp ended up with him not only injuring himself further by playing in LA but bc the team did NOT shut him down like they shouldve when the season was over he injures himself further even more this week. The doctors are not to blame not even the lowest graduate from a medical school would recommend for reyes to play knowing what they knew after tests. This is completely on the FO for either just completely ignoring the doctors they hire to give them information or maybe Omar just cant understand them since his grasp of the english language borders on infantile levels.

I don’t mean to sound like an alarmist but double tear (hammy and hammy-tendon) could be career threatening or at least threaten Reyes’ abilities which make him so great.

I would like to know whether one tear resulted in the second.

I would like to know who was monitoring his PT.

I am truly concerned that the Mets, if Reyes is now useless, are years away from contending seriously.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 30, 2009 at 8:49 pm

if Reyes is useless, this organization would have taken one of the rarest types of talents and completely wasted it through incompetence and greed (keeping fans hopeful enough to keep buying tickets to a new stadium no one really wanted except the incompetent owners). If this is the last of the true jose reyes as we knew from 2006-2008 then I can confidently say that we will probably never see another SS developed by this team as good as him.

jimyager October 1, 2009 at 7:09 am

I hate to say this, but, we can’t sit around another year and say “As Reyes goes, the METS go”. If Reyes will not be back or is not 100% then its time to fill the hole and move on. We cant afford to put in 8 different guys and wait for his return. We need stability in the lineup, not more questions and trips to the DL. Go and get another SS and play him unilt Reyes can come back.

MeetTheMatts.com September 30, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Not career threatening. We’ve had first hand experience, unfortunately. So has Jose.

dave27 September 30, 2009 at 9:24 pm

This is really frustrating, and disappointing, but lets all relax with the doomsday scenarios.

More important to fix it and rehab it right than have Reyes ready on April 1. What’s done is done.

thedude September 30, 2009 at 9:30 pm

Sadly, I’m only half-kidding when I say Reyes would have a great medical malpractice case against this joke of a franchise.

Really? He’s running the bases with one week left in the season? Why?

steadyeddie September 30, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Who is his agent?
Who are the Mets medical people?
Who are the Mets “trainers”?
Who did not ask what was really wrong months ago?
Ain’t only Jerry and Shines who should be FIRED!

ARTIE412 September 30, 2009 at 10:12 pm

I agree, and I voiced this all season. Who the HELL is overseeing the Doctors and Trainers??

This is a trainwreck, and I feel terrible for Jose.

Let’s pray he gets well.

2009_believe September 30, 2009 at 10:15 pm

great point artie, as bad as we feel Jose must feel pretty bad too

say a little prayer for him and let’s see him get the surgery and rehab and come back strong for 2010

2009_believe September 30, 2009 at 10:17 pm

also and i am sorry if this is wrong of me but reading matt’s little commentary up there blaming “loudmouths on talk radio” for this type of situation (people thinking reyes is lazy) when he wrote this whole big piece entitled “is jose ever going to reach his potential?” and is jose isn’t running because its in his head not his leg, blah blah blah, reading matt writing about he feels so bad for jose after he helped ignite this type of circus makes me really angry, then again this is a frustrating type of year

TJSund4 September 30, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Fantastic post 2009. Matt was dogging Jose for a long time and now he makes that commment. That annoyed me as well.

thedude September 30, 2009 at 11:07 pm

Totally agree. Matt wasn’t as bad as some mainstream media/talk radio clowns, but he has a pretty big platform here and he certainly fed the beast.

How many times did we get a “buzz around Shea” “whispers around Shea” post about people thinking Reyes was soft. The implication was clear Matt was buying into it. And the Reyes reaching his potential thing was equally ridiculous.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 30, 2009 at 10:29 pm

steadyeddie. Omar is in touch with the doctors. The problem is these doctors are highly educated people and Omar barely understands english im sure plenty is lost in translation between the doctors and the brilliant mind of Omar and his minions.

ericloz October 1, 2009 at 2:04 am

You and your trashing of Omar and his grasp of the english language is amazing. Why don’t you just come out and say it, tell us how you really feel about Omar?!?

I’m sure we’d all love to hear it.

Omar needs to walk because he failed in his duty as a GM; no other reason.

Your personal attacks on Omar are petty and only show how infantile and obsolete YOU really are, get over it.

Hit The Weights Zeile October 1, 2009 at 10:35 am

Ive actually been making anti-omar comments on this blog for a couple of years now dating back to 2007 at the deadline when we did nothing. I think he is a bad GM, I don’t think hes a very intelligent guy and that goes beyond the fact that he cant hold a press conference without putting his foot in his mouth. He cant follow his own plan that he gave us when he came here, in fact he cant follow any plan he just seems to do the obvious moves and never seems to get creative.

I am not sorry for what I said, the guy is a moron and it is evident in more than his inability to communicate with others. If you have a problem with one of the many reasons I dislike Omar well thats too bad because I dont care what you or any other people like you think. I want my team to win and having an incompetent person as our general manager will not help that and so I can take out my anger however I want. And if you have a problem with that then stop responding to my comments.

The 2009 Mets organization almost definitely have set a new low standard for handling injuries. Why is it that most of the fans knew (and know!) that Beltran and Reyes needed surgery months ago (well, Beltran should have just rested a month, when he could have, and avoided the whole thing). All of this has been said already, but it is so sad and frustrating to see this not only continue, but for us to see these nightmares that we thought would happen actually happen. The Mets are toast for years now and I certainly could see them keeping Omar, destroying not only Reyes’ career, but Beltran’s, Franceour’s, K-ROD – maybe even Santana’s. I know, it’s doom and gloom, but it’s sure a proper time for it. And considering in June, to think of these guys all being in this situation now, would have been considered doom and gloom, this scenario I have laid out doesn’t seem impossible. The Wilpons have to regain some order and clean shop and find a true veteran baseball mind to clean up this mess as best as they can. As it is, I doubt there will be meaningful baseball in Flushing before 2012, but if Omar makes things worse, the lean years could drag on. 2006 was a big friggin tease to now look on the horizon 3 to 5 years ahead until any potential contention can return.

thedude September 30, 2009 at 11:08 pm

does Francoeur have a career to be destroyed?

and honestly, right now K-Rod is just an average closer.

ARTIE412 October 1, 2009 at 6:15 am

I’m a fan of Frenchy, so I think he is going to surprise us next year (as if hitting over 300 for us isn’t surprise enough for his detractors), but taking into account age alone, we have a slew of guys who this year who have been forced to step up before they were ready: Santos, Hernandez, Murphy and even Pelfrey are all under or at 25 years old, as F-cour is.

Next year, the proof will be in the pudding if these guys are asked to shoulder as much of the team’s offense as they have this year.

Let’s hope we’re healthy and they can drop back to being given a chance to season just a bit more, and learn too.

FlushingLumberCo86 September 30, 2009 at 11:28 pm

OUR MEDICAL STAFF AND MANAGEMENT SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS.

All this indecision and going half way. Make a decision and stick by it.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 30, 2009 at 11:48 pm

I hope the few thousand tickets the wilpons sold based on hope that reyes and beltran would come back to save the team was worth it bc it could cost us both their remaining Met careers.

Mets5rocks October 1, 2009 at 2:53 am

Ya just can’t make this stuff up!!!!! #@#@@%$#^%!!!!!!!!,……………….Shakes head as he packs away Mets gear for the season!

fortleemets October 1, 2009 at 7:31 am

This makes no sense. Please get a new training staff immediately. You will not be able to attract free agents as they will be in fear of having below-par medical care.

Agee's Catch October 1, 2009 at 8:34 am

blow up management. change for change is better than looking over our shoulder next season, waiting for the other shoe to drop

ItalPiazza31 October 1, 2009 at 9:32 am

It’s 2003-2004 all over again with this guy. Acquiring someone capable of playing SS everyday should be on the Mets to do list this off season. At this point I don’t think you can rely on Reyes being able to play 120+ games at SS in 2010 especially if there are questions if he’ll be ready by ST.

Elastic October 1, 2009 at 9:49 am

Depending on the extent of the muscle tear and what shape the tendon is in , I would venture to say that Reyes may be out for all/most of 2010.
