Xavier....if we improve on the margins in places, it sets up the possibility of having just a couple of big deals. I think the bench next year will be a strength.

I like Pagan and feel in short bursts or a few weeks at a time if needed, we are well covered in CF, LF or RF. He's a good enough 4th OF and he can hit...he has shown that.

On the IF, we have been weak in getting someone who can play all across the diamond and ML replacement player level at SS and 2b. If we could find a Pagan level bat for SS or 2b as our 5th infielder...I am game. Scutaro is closer to that than Cora and no doubt Tatis is gone next year.

We still need a big bat in LF (holliday???) and we need at least one big pitcher and possibly another smaller pitcher like a Randy Wolf.

I vote for a big time trade to get a top flight young pitcher in here like a Matt Cain. Returning 2 ptichers and a positional prospect. I'd give SF, Both Pelfrey and Niese and then either Fmart, Flores or Marte as the positional player. If we get Holliday, there is less need for Fmart and Ike Davis has shown more at 1b than Fmart has at this point to be our best bat prospect. He is the future 1b either in late 2010 or on time in 2011

That is exactly my fear. To go beyond that I also fear more "worst team money can buy" seasons ahead of us due to the top heavy roster with no supporting cast.

i fear this offseason will be a bunch of little deals like this - a Scutaro here a Randy Wolf there - instead of anything significant. I would be glad to be proven wrong however.

Everyone complained about signing Cora to be a backup at SS and 2nd at 2 million. And now we are talking ourselves into signing Scutaro for 4 million?

If we are worried about SS i'd rather give a short term contract to Orlando Cabrera or Miguel Tejada both could play 2nd base also and are better then Scutaro.

And for a backup at 2nd and SS i'd rather go cheaper and sign a guy like Jerry Hairston Jr.

Agreed. Scutaro is a terrible idea. He is a backup infielder at best. He's Alex Cora who had a good year this year. He can play 2nd or SS. He has a .265 career BA. a career .337 OBP. Has 50 career HR's.

He is not someone that i would spend any money on. If he wanted to a league minimum contract to sit on the bench then he's on the team. Other then that i don't want to touch him. I'll let another team give him a 2 year deal and watch him hit .260 with a .320 OBP and 5 HR's. It doesn't take you 6 seasons and 1600 career AB's before something clicks.

Actually Wang if you look at Scutaro's career progression...it has been evolving to this. He is a the SS, 2b, 1b, LF version of Daniel Murphy in Dans current year....I think Murphy has better years ahead but that is what Scutaro is at the moment.

I think we could do a lot worse than having Scutaro be the back up plan for an injured Jose at SS or a worsening Castillo at 2b.

Scutaro is versatile and decent enough offensively to give him a couple of years to get him. I would not go higher than $4M plus a few bucks for incentives hit. But he is a decent fallback and more versatile than Cora IMO

Matt -
You bust on Mets management for going after players coming off career years; and then you post Joe D advocating the Mets sign Scutaro who is coming off his best offensive season of his career in virtually every single category at the age of 33?!?! And to a 2-year deal no less...
