Note: Wright and Francoeur Finishing Strong
By Michael Baron - Oct 3, 2009 10:19 am

Since having the day off last Sunday to ‘clear his head’, David Wright is 6 for 16 with four doubles and two RBI.

Last night, Wright had three hits and raised is league leading average to .416 against left handed pitching.

…as Matt said on Thursday, David is the least of my concerns going into 2010, and despite the power outage, the figure above should be comforting…

David Lennon, in today’s Newsday, spoke with hitting coach Howard Johnson earlier this week and he says  both he and Wright watched video and pointed out instances where he was flinching at the plate.

Johnson told Lennon:

“I think it’s important that he sees it and he can go from there…he’s going to be OK. I think a lot of it is subconscious and those things take time to go away. But they do go away. I just keep putting the thought in his mind – be aggressive, swing the bat and be the hunter up there. Let it go.”

…its important to note that as the end of the season looms and questions are arising as to which coach will be retained and which one will not, that Johnson and Wright have a very close relationship and they are expected to work closely together in the offseason…in addition, the offense, outside of the power, has been good this year as the team is hitting .270 which is the best in the league…they are eighth in the league in on base percentage at .334, but for the most part, the hitting has been good…what happens after they get on base is another story…

In addition to Wright, Jeff Francoeur hit his 15th home run of the season last night and since last Sunday he is 7 for 20 with two home runs and four RBI.

Since joining the Mets in July, Francoeur has hit .313 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI in 74 games.

…i think Jeff has been a great story as he tries to bounce back from a terrible 2008…he has turned his season around since leaving Atlanta and i would expect that he is a part of the Mets plans in 2010 as a very strong complimentary player with tremendous potential to be a force in the lineup as well as the field…

I’m glad HoJo got Wright to see that he was “flinching” at the plate (esp vs RHP). I saw it more in his leaning back, ready to bail. If Wright can get past the Cain beaning, he will be fine. We know it ain’t easy (and anyone who does think it’s easy, let me hit them with my lame 60 MPH fastball in their helmeted head and see how brave THEY are getting back in the box against me).

On Jeff, I said earlier that we should be THRILLED to have a 280/20/90 GG RF.

    Extrapolating Francoeur’s Met’s numbers to 162 games is 313/21/90.

Even if he loses 30 batting points, pretty damned good for a “complimentary” player batting 6th in an otherwise strong lineup. With guys like Wright, Beltran and our LF bopper on base, they won’t be able to pitch around him either.

the flinching is a new issue. How are they going to correct the persistant porblem of a long swing, and flailing at breaking balls low and away?

    • wlaadair says:

HoJo will work with him one on one this winter, if he starts swinging for the fences with the long swing, fans will get all over him for keeping the long swing, if he shortens his swing and is getting singles and doubles, the fans will still be harsh, can’t win either way, all you can ask is that he does his best to make adjustments.

I’m so sick of the sugar coating of David Wright’s season. If any other member of the Mets had such a sharp decline in production, the media and members of this blog would be all over him.
He’s been plain awful this season by his standards. The fact he had a few hits this week against the worst pitching staff in baseball doesn’t alleviate my concerns for him going forward.
I’m sick of the stadium and lineup protection excuses. Sure, those can affect the numbers to an extent but shouldn’t to the point that guys like Michael Cuddyer have triple the amount of homers than he does. Adrian Gonzalez doesn’t have any protection in his lineup either.

    • wlaadair says:

You make it sound like no one has been harsh with him all season, so far from the truth and he has manned up and talked about his difficulties and is not blaming the stadium.

      • Don Logan says:

We know you have a man-crush on Wright. You’ve made that clear in every Wright thread recently. I didn’t say Wright was blaming the stadium. It’s the writers on this blog that continue to say it’s the adjustment to the new stadium and no protection in the order and that they aren’t worried about him going into next season.
The fact of the matter is- his numbers are alarmingly down this year and how anyone can say he’s not a concern going into next season is naive at this point.

          Don

what is naive about knowing that a player’s power numbers are down from one season to the next?

Big deal, so he didn’t hit any homers and struck out more then normal this year.

Right now this ball club has about 8 issues that are of greater concern then Wright’s power numbers.

He’ll work w/ HoJo (or whoever) over the winter look @ tape, and figure out exactly where he went wrong this year.

A player of Wright’s caliber and age doesn’t just lose it. if he does, then either he never had it and was lucky for 4 years, or is hurt.

let’s wait and see what happens next year, who knows maybe he was never a 30 homer guy.

A great many people on this site were against this trade when it was made in July. Easily, the best move the Mets made all year. A very good complementary player. Much better than Church. Put him in the six hole in a strong lineup and he’ll give you .280 25 90.

    • Don Logan says:

Well said. I too took a beating on here when I said the trade was a good one at the time. Never understood people’s fixation w/ Church.

      • Patrick says:

count me among those who liked the deal for Francouer, He has holes but it is not impossible for a 25 year old to adjust his game. He has got to balance out a little more on the walks to k’s ration in his game. But never the less, if you can get an .825 ops out of him in rightfield with the 3B’s mental offense fixed and Reyes back plus a new leftfielder then the Mets are looking at a good thing in Francouer.

  5. Patrick says:

It is an absolute fantasy world to say you are not concerned about a guy who averaged 27 HRs a year heading into his prime only hitting 10. It does not take an ounce of objectivity to see that this is not some mirage. His strikeout rate has escalated in a bad way and he had less extra base hits than Daniel Murphy.

But lets all continue to be in David Wright fantasy land where he is Cap’n Crunch.
