The Mets defeated the Astros by the score of 5-1 today at Citi Field.

The Least You Should Know:

Pat Misch pitched well once again today, going five innings and allowing a run on five hits to the Astros before the rain came in the top of the sixth inning forcing an end to his day and season, but earning his third victory of the year – all in September.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Carlos Lee made a great sliding backhanded catch which, at the time, saved a couple of runs for the Astros.

In that fourth inning, Josh Thole broke out of a 1 for 22 funk with his first career triple and Mets’ 48th triple of the year which is the new franchise mark for triples in a season.

Fernando Tatis drove in two runs with a two out single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sean Green walked three batters in 1 2/3 innings forcing a save situation with two outs in the ninth inning, and Francisco Rodriguez nailed down his 35th save of the year.

Other Observations and Notes:

Tatis is enjoying a six game hitting streak, and he is 11 for 22 over that stretch with three doubles, one home run, and six RBI.

Today was a 2004 Mets redux by the Astros as former Met Jeff Keppinger and Kaz Matsui were in the lineup for Houston today.

Cheers to the fans that stuck around during and after the rain delay – they were allowed to move to the first rows behind the dugout to watch the game.

Up Next:

The Mets will play their final game of the 2009 season tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 pm at Citi Field, with Nelson Figueroa facing Wilton Lopez.

What are the odds? For the last 3 years we can not BUY a win when we needed JUST ONE MORE “W” in the final games of the Season–and, now, in this ‘Lost Summer’—we WIN the Final Three Games in a row for a winning streak that will carry us through the deep dark winter to…….2010 or BUST!
Let’s GO METS!!!

did you forget johans performance last year? or maine’s two years ago?

stickguy October 3, 2009 at 9:02 pm

yeah, they always get a huge pitching performance in game 161. It was game 162 that seemed to trip them up.

Can’t wait for the off season. Gonna be a real fun one! If it starts with jerry and the coaches getting canned (at least warthen and razor!), that will be a nice way to get it going.

Hey, after tomorrow, the Mets are 0-0 and tied for first again!

Speaking of the end of the season, Over the next two days, it is quite possible that either the Dodgers or the Tigers, if not both, might blow Divisions they both have lead since April. The Dodgers blowing a 6 game lead with 7 to play and the Tigers a 3 game lead with 4 to play. The Dodgers will stay make the playoffs but they would’ve blown home field. Question. If either blows it, if not both, do you think the sports media will be all over either team for choking away a Division title? Do you think the coverage will be equal to what the Mets received the past two seasons for blowing their leads or will it be less because it’s not NYC?

All depends. The Mets collapse was long and arduous and you’re right, they’re in NY. But the Mets went from division leader to no playoffs. If the Dodgers lose the division, they still have the WC so that’s not as big as the Mets.

Detroit isn’t as big of a market as NY, and the Tigers are as well known to the casual fan as the Mets so, no they wouldn’t get as much coverage.

The Dodgers had a 15.5 game lead on the Rockies at one time.

I’ll give that it’s severe. But it’s not as harmful to the Dodgers as it would be if they missed the play offs for that collapse of sorts. The Mets blew a big lead and didn’t make the playoffs. That’s why it was such a major story.

From ESPN: The Florida Marlins are rumored to be talking to Bobby Valentine about a managerial position.

They will never pay him what he is worth, or at least what he thinks he’s worth.
