The Mets (70–92) completed a three-game sweep of the Astros with a 4–0 win today in Citi Field, ending the 2009 season.

The Least You Should Know:

On the final day of the season, Nelon Figueroa turned in the team’s best pitching performance of the season, throwing a complete-game shut out, he gave up just four hits, walking none, and striking out seven.

Angel Pagan was 4 for 4, with two doubles, a triple and two runs scored.

Luis Castillo and David Wright each hit an RBI sac-fly.

Josh Thole was 3 for 4, and hit .321 in 17 games with the Mets.

Misc., Etc., and Other Observations:

Good for Figueroa, who should be on the Mets next season – stop jerking him around.  He didn’t walk a single batter.  Figueroa was slapped in the face with shaving cream by Tim Redding, while doing a post-game interview with SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt.  I’m happy for Nelson.

The three-game sweep of the Astros pushed the Mets to 70 wins.

Pagan, who entered the season batting .298, went 4 for 4 and ends the year hitting .306.  He can hit, there is no question about it.  The question the Mets will have to ask in the off season is whether he can play a full season, stay healthy and play smart, otherwise they need a left fielder.

The remaining fans gave the team a standing ovation as they walked off the field for the final game of 2009 – the players saluted back, and tossed bats and hats to the crowd over the dugout.

The Mets played a video in center field during the game, to the tune of Kind and Generous by Natalie Merchant, in which every player on the roster, including Jose Reyes, said, ‘Thank you,’ to Mets fans for supporting the team for 162 games this season… I will not lie, it made me a little sad.

This was a difficult season, there were a ton of dramatic off-field stories, painful injuries, crazy moments, and disappointing results, but, I still love the Mets, and I’ll still be sad when there is no game tomorrow.

Nice end to a horrible season.

Also nice to see the Mets say farewell to the fans for the fist time in, what, 3 seasons?

Now it’s time to clear house, and build a successful team. Expectations are low going forward, so theres no pressure to HAVE to add a Luis Castillo, Moises Alou, etc.

Build for long term success, not another one and done. and by “done” I, of course, am referring to 24 months of grueling, excrutiating torture.

Even if it means we’re just a middling up-and-coming team next year, we can take it, we’re Mets fans after all. We’ve been through worse.

Happy offseason boys, though the way the last two offseasons have gone, I think Matt’s busy time is just around the corner.

Oh and sorry to be THAT guy but:

The question the Mets will have to ask in the off season is whether he can play a full season, stay healthy and play smart, otherwise they need a left fielder.

Make no mistake about it, Pagan will not be healthy all of next season. Pagan will still have horrible baseball instincts, and the Mets WILL need a left fielder.

We may be able to include him in a trade for a major player. Pagan is a respectable CF/leadoff hitter, but he is a luxury for a team with pressing needs.

Thank God its finally over. THe only guys who SHOULD be Mets next year are reyes, wright, beltran, santana, krod. Nelson Figueroa is not on that list, like anyone else if an upgrade is there to be made, make it.

And Francouer to the “needs to be on the team” list and we’re agreed.

I’ll throw frenchy in too but he better not be hitting above 6th in the lineup or else we are in trouble again.

Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty we’re free at last!

This is the first time in my many years as a Mets fan that I’m actually relieved that the season is over.

Now we can start anew, look forward to all of the key players returning to good health and hope the GM (who ever he may be) picks up a decent pitcher, a good bat and a new manager over the winter.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, O’ChooChoo.

Usually, the last game of the season brings in a pretty dismal feeling. The thought that I won’t be able to enjoy Mets baseball for 4+ months until they start reporting for Spring Training.

Not this year, though.

Today, we all get to exhale, and realize that it’s finally over. Tomorrow, we’ll wake up refreshed and take our next steps to 2010.

LGM.
