Sandy Alomar Sr. and First Base Coach Luis Alicea will not be returning for the 2010 season.
According to a team press release, Razor Shines and Catching Instructor Sandy Alomar Jr. will be part of the team’s coaching staff in 2010 in yet to be determined roles.
The release also reads, “Howard Johnson, Dan Warthen and Bullpen Coach Randy Niemann will return to Jerry Manuel’s staff in the same positions next year.”
…Hmmm, Jerry Manuel’s staff, which must mean he too is returning in 2010… also, i bet razor moves to bench coach, in place of alomar… razor and jerry are tight, and razor’s positives, i.e. his attittude, positivity and encouragement, are probably better served sitting by jerry’s side…

In a video for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal says Bobby Valentine will be on Houston’s short list to manage the Astros.
Yesterday, Buster Olney of ESPN.com said that Valentine is in talks with the Marlins, ‘among other teams,’ regarding, ‘a possible return as a manager in Major League Baseball.’
However, Marlins team President David Samson told the Associated Press he is unaware of any talks between his team and Valentine.
In a post to NY Baseball Digest, Mike Silva explains why going to the Marlins would be a huge mistake for Valentine.
…yes, it would be a mistake because the Marlins are not the Mets…
In a post to MetsBlog.com, here, on Friday. I wrote, “Bring back Valentine, before he goes to another team… I want him to manage the Mets.’

In a report for MLB.com, Marty Noble looks back at 2009, writing about what went right, what went wrong and the biggest surprise of the season.
The best-worst part of Noble’s report is his list of things lost by the Mets in 2009, such as, “The Mets a run when a player didn’t touch third base,” and, “The Mets lose a game when they hit into a ninth-inning triple play.”
Similarly, in a post to Circling the Bases, for NBC Sports, D.J. Short asks, ‘What went wrong,’ looking back at ‘How it happened,’ and the ‘Silver Linings,’ while looking ahead to the off season.
In the end, Short writes:
“The injuries are a convenient excuse, but no manager who leads his team to a lifeless 20-48 stretch deserves to be considered safe… Fred Wilpon and company shouldn’t expect fans to line up with the same leadership in place, no matter how much they cut ticket prices.”
Manuel told reporters he expects there will be an announcement today regarding the team’s plans for the coaching staff and off season.
…from what i can gather, Omar Minaya and Jeff Wilpon will also address reporters early in the day from a press conference in Citi Field…
…i’ll be there, live blogging with text and video updates…
…i hope the Mets set a fairly definitive course, including who is on staff and who isn’t, leaving no room for debate from fans and media over the next few weeks… just show us your cards, be honest, put the speculation to bed – meaning for less backpedaling down the road – and be done with it…
