David Waldstein of the New York Times believes the Mets will look in to acquiring Roy Halladay, but, “It is unlikely they will have the prospects to entice the Blue Jays to make a trade.”
…i agree… but, let’s not get too hung up on prospects and farm systems… much like with the Johan Santana situation with the Twins a few years ago, because he has a full no-trade clause, if halladay flat-out rejects toronto’s efforts to sign him to an extension, the Halladay Derby might come down to the team capable of not only trading prospects to get him, but who also has the cash to sign him to what will most certainly be Sabathia– or Santana-like long-term deal… and so, again, like with santana, if the Yankees do not plan to spend that money on pitching, or if the Red Sox decide to spend on a bat, etc., who knows how the market will break and shape out…
…in the end, at least as of right now, i have no clue if the Mets stand a chance of getting halladay, who of course they’ll have interest in… i mean, who wouldn’t have interest in him… maybe they get him, maybe they don’t, maybe they have a chance, maybe they don’t… time will tell… all i’m saying is, to frame his availability as one of just prospects and a straight-up trade is ignoring the realities of MLB… instead, it’s about who has just enough talent to get him, because they’re capable of signing him to a seven-year deal… it’s a two-part move…

I agree 100%, Halladay will go to the Yankees, Red Sox, or Mets. It is not about who has the prospects, its about who has the cash, which Mr. Wilpon stated he has plenty of.
I completely agree. It’s hard to say who will end up with him, but in the end I have to believe if the Red Sox want him, he’s theirs. The have the perfect combination of good young prospects and cash needed to get the deal done.
Look I have always been a Doc fan, but why not sign Lackey and Marquis for the price to just sign Halladay plus we get to keep Davis, Holt, and Mejia( the prospects most likely to be sent to Toronto). Or trade some of those guys for the big cat, Fielder! Take a good crack at Holliday(not gonna leave Pujols’ side, but money changes everything), De Rosa, can play everywhere and has decent pop and Hudson. If not Pagan showed us the speed we need. Given Frenchy’s toughness he should take command of that clubhouse and give us the grit we need. Overall I’m not as pessimistic as some the media has us wanting to believe but then again this is YANKEE town again. Ok so IF all goes well

Do not underestimate the desire of the White Sox, Cubs and Angels. Let alone the Dodgers
The White Sox need to take care of Peavy before they start thinking about Halladay. The Cubs could be a possibility, though I don’t think a likely one. If the Angels had the money to ink Halladay, they wouldn’t be letting Lackey walk this year. Dodgers could use him.
Sign John Lackey.
Trade Pelfrey, Parnell, Murphy and Ike Davis to Milwaukee for Prince Fielder.
I thought we concluded the Mets need a team built on speed?Mo Vaughn Jr ain’t got no legs!
Actually, I’ve seen him turn a single into a triple on a misplay on a few occasions. He may not be Reyes, but he is certainly not Vaughn. You obviously have not seen Fielder play because he has more hustle and heart in him than almost ANYBODY on the Mets.
Golly Mr md, you are right!
I did not realize he has had 6 six stolen bases in the last 5 years!
He is a perfect “speed” player; what was I thinkin’.
That tub of lard will join the boyz on the DL by May!
Here’s what I find interesting. The mets trade and get the best pitcher in the league in Santana, yet the Twins still make the playoffs. No playoff appearances for the mets since they traded for Santana. Sad.
We should be trading for the Twins scouting department =)
What the Mets have going for them in the Halladay sweepstakes:
1. Chances are slim that the Blue Jays would trade him to the Red Sox or Yankees. In fact, to avoid seeing him go to the Yankees or Red Sox as a free agent, they may be more compelled to trade him somewhere else now where he can sign a long term contract to ensure he isn’t a Yankee or Red Sox.
2. Citi Field
3. The Mets just came off a rough year and will be hungry for change and willing to spend.
4. Despite 2009, the Mets are a large market team with a talented nucleus with Santana, K-Rod, Wright, Reyes, Beltran and some of the kids.
The potential reasons why Halladay would not come to the Mets:
1. He was born and raised in Denver, this could make him more of a “West Coast Guy”, especially if a team like the Dodgers or Angels is in the mix.
2. 2009 (nuff said)
3. His best years are obviously behind him. He will be 33 next year and has been pitching in the bigs since he was 21, that is 12 years of service on that arm (think Johan Santana in 4-5 more years). The Mets may not be interested in a Derek Lowe type deal with him (i.e. paying him huge money through 38-40 years of age)
4. Mets may not have the prospects or be willing to part with them.
I know halladay isnt getting any younger, but I think he will pitch at a high level into his late 30s. He doesnt rely only on a 90+ fastball, the guy hAs like 5 pitches.
TRADE FOR DOC HALLADAY!!
By the way … I would trade for Halladay AND STILL sign Lackey … but that’s just me, I’m a winner.
I would too, because we will probably be trading pelfrey and niese to get fielder so we will need lackey as our #3!
if we sign halladay and lackey, we wont have money to get a LF or/and a 1B.
Very true, and we’ll move the prospects we could use to fill the positions internally.
I agree with yesterdays post. We’ll trade midlevel players to teams looking to move contract.
Fernando Martinez in LF, Murphy at 1B (with Ike Davis in the wings).
I’m willing to go with the elite rotation (Santana, Halladay, Lackey) and put athletic outfielders that have good range and arm with 20+ HR pop in the corners (Martinez and Franceour), and go with Murphy for now at 1B.
I’d also bring back Tatis as my IF/OF super-sub, who kills left-handed pitching and keeps posting an OPS around .800 every year, and use him to spell Murphy and Fernando against tough lefties. I’d also have Pagan as a 4th outfielder.
I’d take into consideration that my CF, SS and 3B all hit much better than the average at their position, so if I could get CF and 3B type production from my 1B and LF, it works.
haha “that’s just me, i’m a winner”. I like it
This is the perfect scenario in which the Mets give big money and prospects for a guy who is poised to hit the wall in his career. I just don’t think it is worth it, especially with the kids the Mets have coming through the system.
Sound crazy? That’s the kind of thing that happens to this franchise, though. Haven’t we all become accustomed to it by now?
Santana was a different story. He was what, 5 years younger than Halladay is now? No thank you. Spend that money on filling more than just one hole.
but you wouldnt give hallday a 6-7 year contract like santana. it would have to be something like 4/70mm+ with an option. remember hallday is a big guy and big guys dont break down that easly.
Yeah, but the cost would be cash+prospects. And the Mets best prospects are the ones that Toronto would want. I don’t want them to give up a Mejia or a Davis (especially Davis). Especially when Halladay is a free agent at the end of next year.
Halladay would cost us Davis & Meija for starters. Lyle Overbay is getting long in the tooth, and Meija is our best pitching prospect. Toss in a couple mid level prospects (Gee, Havens?) and you might have enough.
Pelfrey is damaged. Neise needs to come back healthy. You don’t get Halladay with lesser players, because mediocrity never adds up to anything.
If I can get Lackey and keep Meija and Davis, I think I’m ahead of the game.
Halladay is old-ish. Lets build our own prospects through our farm system instead of trading them all.
If you have the opportunity to get Halladay, you have to do it.
That being said, judging by what the Jays were asking the Phillies, I don’t see the match. Omar does like pitching. I think we will go hard after Lackey, and explore Bay or Holliday, but may get our OFer via trade. I’ve also been a proponent of signing DeRosa for 1B. (Trade Murphy or keep for bench/platoon, etc.)
i like how you think… gotta go after pitching .. then holiday… how about laroche for 1st?
LaRoche is terrible in the first half, so we can’t afford to have a 1B hitting .200 in thru May with 4 HRs
so we are ok with murphy at 1st?… im a murphy fan but you have to look at his first half as well
