Buzz: The Market for Dan Uggla
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 8, 2009 2:06 pm

Last month, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com said the Marlins are likely to trade two of Dan Uggla, Cody Ross and Jorge Cantu.

Today, Mark Polishuk of MLB Trade Rumors looks at teams who could be interested in Uggla.

from what i can gather, uggla should start packing his bags, since there is no way the Marlins will pony up and pay the $7 million he is likely to get in arbitration… not to mention he is eligible again in 2011, only after which can he become a free agent…

Uggla has not finished a season hitting better than .260 since he was a rookie in 2006 – however, he has hit at least 31 home runs with at least 88 RBI, while playing in pitcher-friendly Miami, each of the last three seasons.

to start, he is rarely injured, having played in at least 146 games in his first four seasons in the league… however, he cannot hit a left-handed pitcher to save his life… regardless of who is pitching, though, he strikes out a lot and swings at everything… he also should not be playing second base… i imagine the team who acquires him will put him at first base or third, which is why we will likely hear rumors connecting him to the Mets, who could use his power and are capable of finiding him a position…

…the thing is, the Mets already have a big-strike-out, free-swinger in Jeff Francoeur, and, since uggla no longer should be batting second, i am not sure if the Mets would benefit in having him hit fifth or sixth…

…plus, i think any prospects who would be needed to get a guy like uggla could be better used to get someone who fits in better with the team’s overall needs, assuming they must trade prospects to fill holes at all

    Pass on Dan Uggla.

Yeah, no thanks. The power is intriguing, but if you thought a groundball pitcher like Pelfrey struggled with this year’s brutal infield defense, add this butcher to the mix.

  3. Agee's Catch says:

I’ll take Uggla & Ross. Send them Murphy, Parnell, and a couple midlevel prospects

It would be a fun line up for sure. I don’t mind the K’s because it cuts down on the DPs. Glass is half full, after all.

    Reyes SS
    Castillo 2B
    Wright 3B
    Beltran CF
    Uggla 1B
    Francouer RF
    Ross LF
    Santos/Thole

7 out of 8 positions are capable of hitting 20 HR in 2010. Earl Weaver would love this line up.

No thanks on ross or uggla but I like Cantu. He is an RBI guy, even despite hitting 13 less HRs this year he still had 40 doubles and 100 RBI. Not sure he can play 2nd base anymore but he can definitely play 1B and he is just now entering his prime at 27 years old with 2 very good seasons the past 2 years.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

also Cantu will obviously cost more in prospects BUT not nearly as much as gonzalez or fielder. Also if the guy could in fact play 2nd base (which i doubt since uggla is awful and if he cant start there over him i doubt he can play there) but just for the heck of it that would allow us to keep murphy and his non-power bat at 1B while ridding us of castillo and making the lineup VERY deep probably reyes, beltran, wright, holliday, cantu, murphy, franceour, catcher. If wrights power is gone next year you could flip him to 2nd and beltran to 3rd. Fantasy’s are fun.

  5. Beltranmynewfavmet says:

I’ll pass on Uggla. That guy is a terrible hitter, despite the power. We don’t need to insert a .250 hitter into our lineup.

Cantu, sure lets do it. He’s got some pop and like Hit the Weights says, he’s just entering his prime.

    Do it. Jorge Cantu.

  6. racemccloud says:

No Uggla, no Ross, yay Cantu.

Although I hate the idea of giving the Marlins even MORE prospects…

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

It is what it is at least he wouldnt completely drain the farm like fielder or gonzalez would. You have to figure we’d keep either martinez or davis (id prefer davis bc of his power and bc hes more fine tuned having played college).

  7. therambler says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please no. This cannot be happening… no serious thought about Dan Uggla…PLEASE! Has it really come to this…?

  8. The Eephus says:

Oh no, power! Ahh let’s run away from it. I mean, Ugglas metrics in the field cannot be that good, as we all know defense at 2b can cost a team a half a dozen runs a game. And we also know that since he has talent and power, the words “gritty, hard nosed, and getting a uniform dirty” cannot possibly apply to him. Who cares whether or not he never gets cheated on a swing, and is a prime run producer at a position that offers few of them in a park that has large dimensions. I’m sorry, but this is a no shame offseason, in that we should not be looking at defense as a reason not to get a player. While they made boneheaded plays as a team this year, overall defensive ability had little to do with those. Also, I think we can all agree that defense wasn’t the problem, nor was OBP or batting average. Plain and simple, the slappy hitters couldn’t produce runs! This guy can and won’t cost much… Duhhhhhh

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

I agree with what you are saying, I just would prefer cantu over uggla. If uggla is a true salary dump and they just want to get rid of him for next to nothing heck yea get the guy put him at 2nd base and find someone to take at least part of castillos contract. Id rather have uggla over castillo for the reasons you said but as far as the 3 marlins available i think cantu is the head and shoulders superior player of the 3.

  9. dave27 says:

There’s a reason that the last few years the Marlins flirt with contention and then flame out in September, and we should be familiar with it. Poor fundamental play from guys like Uggla, offensively and defensively.

    No thanks.

  10. ExileInLA says:

    Remember the 2008 All-Star Game?

Now, imagine what he would do in a clutch September game that REALLY mattered?
